@12:15 How to get ship speed without the periscope speed tool: Point your scope at the ship's bow and time how long it takes the entire ship to cross your stationary crosshair. Divide the number of seconds it took by the length of the ship. You can look up the ship's length in your ship identification book. Multiply that by 2, and that's your ship's speed. Do this while stationary (or moving directly towards the enemy ship's bow when you start the timer.)

I just started playing this game a few days ago and one thing still boggles me, even after watching a bunch of your videos, other videos, and general online searches.... After I launch torpedoes at one vessel, I cannot seem to switch to a different target, no matter what I try. Even after impact and the ship has sunk, I can't seem to click on a different ship (in map mode or viewing the periscope) to select a different target. It's created some rather precarious situations for me in what would've otherwise been a quick couple kills and slipping back beneath the waves. Instead, I've been forced to have to steer my sub in a way the firing arc seems to be roughly where I want it to and hope for the best. Very much not ideal.

Used a FAT last night for the first time and set it to turn left (as that made the most sense, given the direction of travel of the convoy). Weirdly enough, it then proceeded to turn right after its initial run. No idea if that was down to the crew interfering with my settings - although that has never been the case for me with any other torpedo settings. Kinda wish U-Boat had the same visual representation on the map screen of the FAT's run and search pattern that you got in, err.. SH III, IIRC.

I really appreciate this video. I'm a new player, and have been really struggling to even find ships to fire at much less getting a good torpedo solution. This is the best AOB video I have found. Maybe eventually I can sink more than 2 ships on a patrol 😅

One thing with Uboat that really bugs me is the terrible AI spotting. If i get back into the periscope and it’s not locked anymore but trained on an easily visible target it’s really fuckin dumb it’s not on my map anymore

for me the best way to play Uboat is in first person only and with own aim makes it more wow and hard but damn its nice to see the game getting videos so i can keep seeing it when im not playing. Also nice video!

IIA is miserable boat. I was able to get 50k tonnage but I sank almost all the ships by scuttling using the engineer perk. That and dynamite. The optics on the II boats has to be the worst in the world. I would like to see if there is an expert submariner who can document the difference with the II, VII, and IX optics because I feel like the type II has to be 50% or less of the other boats view range. Generally this makes sense because the boat was built in 1935 while the others were years later. Also the Type II was a treaty boat rather than the others being illegal for the time. I do love the handling, interior, and the sailing of the type II, just can't stand that its a blind rat in the sea. The IID isn't any better other than a very decent range. I did the weather station mission in the IID and was able to make it to Rochelle. I think if they let you upgrade the IID I would keep it through the entire war, but because they limit the upgrades its not viable, especially its horrible optics. I haven't seen the hull coating tech either that block sonar. Hope its in the game. Great live streams, enjoy them.

One time I was hitting a convoy in the fog at night having a really difficult time, then after the first torpedo impact the tommies were kind enough to shoot up a bunch of red flares that made the rest of the freighters easy to find!

I've been having a blast with the full release. Injured my foot and been out work for a month so been having loads of time to play

Yep, you just saved it. I was wondering why you did that. 😂 That happened to me, also right as I was entering the locks. I selected Forward 5, then immediately went to periscope depth leaving the locks. Later went down to sit on the sea floor. Survived with only minor damage, but had to wait quite a while for the aircraft to clear out. You’ll be screwed if you stay on the surface. At one point you had nine leaks. 😂

I like air raids. I think there a cool change of perspective: from hunter to hunted. I usually try to fight, get out of port as fast a possible and try evasive maneuvers (zig zagging). Also, its nearlly as satisfying to kill a plane as ist is a boot with your torpedo.

The house looks suspiciously large for a mere sailor on a U-Boat. War ships can also potentially detect T2/electric torpedoes by hydrophone, as all torpedoes make high frequency sounds while travelling. Your own sonar operator for sure can hear them. But does the game actually react to it?

When that happened to me, I just reversed right back into the dock and sent my guys on vacation. Also, side question: Do console commands still exist? I've been smashing tilde and every other key and it doesn't seem to work anymore. I'm just trying to teleport through all the slow parts.

You had about the same reaction when I got air raided the first time

I used to think putting points into sub pens was a waste. Then the same thing happened to me. So now I build the damn pens. I was heading into Bergen and a raid came in. They sunk me in 75m or so of water, but I was able to survive by the skin of my teeth.

Use mods

There are a lot of things wrong with this game, but if I could only have them fix one thing, it would be to make all time compressions available all the time. Don't make me go slow just because I'm near land or in shallow water. I fully accept the risks. It takes me two hours to complete a mission. Let me speed up the game at all times. And my second fix would be to stop pausing my time compression every time I hear a propeller. This is a nightmare when I'm trying to speed past a convoy at periscope depth and all 25 ships trigger a pause.

A good explanation. How would you do it on hard mode? Look and guess? Sometimes I'd try to get the ship perpendicular to me to me to estimate it's course and then use that to calculate AOB. Not sure if there is a better way.
