This is good, but it might be a little over-engineered. 3/4" ply is a bit much, and adds a ton of weight and cost. You could get by with 1/4 or 1/2" OSB as your substrate, then use a hardwood edge, rabbeted to allow you to use one piece and overlay the corner. Some might not have the tools to do a rabbet, so your method works great. And, a roundover on your inside edge would reduce any damage from chair wheels rolling up against it. Nice work.
@no_handle_required Жыл бұрын
¼ is too thin for some people, me for example. The carpet it goes on just can't handle it and the weight that goes on it. ¾ worked very well for me. It'll depend on the use.
@craftedbykvg4649 Жыл бұрын
@@no_handle_required Yeah...1/4" wouldn't be enough, but 1/2" should be...I'm a big dude with a big chair, so we'll see what happens. LOL
@fredb19737 ай бұрын
Thing is 3/4 might be a little thick, but it's not as popular size as a 1/2 so a lot of times 3/4 will be cheaper to buy than 1/2.

No they aren't? At 13:48 you can clearly see the brackets are over 3/4 the depth of the desk with only a 5 or 6 inch overhang.

Yeah, wood shims, just be sure to attach them to the desk's underside before securing to brackets. Maybe have the attaching screws go through them.

Is it possible to use a 4 X 8 sheet of hardboard from Home Depot? I'ts actually hard, and you can cut a sheet in half and have two floorings for the chairs?
@danieldaponte18192 жыл бұрын
I'd imagine a sheet of hardboard isn't hard enough to replace the plywood. It is basically the same material that a clipboard is made of, if that helps you imagine it. It could probably replace the wooden flooring panels though
@Ontario_Voyager2 жыл бұрын
I would think that hardboard might work if the carpet is not too thick (ie is low pile). If plush (high pile) carpet and when the chair rolled it might be a bit "wobbly". I've got engineered hardwood left over and am deciding between 1/4" or 7/16" OSB for under it. The 7/16" might make the overall height a bit too high though. Still thinking.
@lostinmyspace49102 жыл бұрын
I already have a pretty hard chair mat but a wheel finally wore thru it and is cracking in that spot. I will keep the old chair mat i place, and cut a hardboard sheet exact size and put it on top so it has a flat support. That may work pretty good for a few more years. THUMBS UP!!!

do you worry about wood movement when attaching the brackets to the top? ie. directly screwing into the wood top as opposed to another fastening system?
@obscurityworks59333 жыл бұрын
Maybe if I was putting them somewhere where the humidity and temps swing wildly. My basement is pretty consistent year-round. But, even then, there's a bit of room for movement in the bracket holes. In the 18 months they've been in use (I built another of these), there have been zero issues.

I have seen people on KZbin use 1:1 ratio of the boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits, but not add the oil based polyethylene. What does adding that into the mixture do? I’m very green when It comes to finishes so please forgive me if this is a dumb question. Also, is that combo good for both interior and exterior wood projects? Thank you!
@obscurityworks59333 жыл бұрын
The linseed oil is more of a soak in kind of finish and the poly sits on top. Things finished with just linseed oil aren't super-well protected from spills, etc. and poly does a better job on that end of things.

@@tiduswrath nope, I built my desk this way though. Def sturdy, I can sit and stands on it. I have an extra I used and can tell you the measurements / describe it. The length of the bolt is 3 & 1/16” long and the diameter of the head is .5”. The head does not have a Philip or Flathead indention, they have to be ratchet on. Head also says ATC.
