Happy memories of the days when AT Computing was still housed on the premise of Radboud University and teachings were done by HJT himself. The PDP and a VT100 was just standing there next to him in one of the classrooms.

Great talk, just one gripe: It should be: "The total entropy of a *isolated* system never decreases." In omitting the word "isolated" from this formulation of the second law of thermodynamics, the talk has quite literally simplified down the second law, presumably in order to fit things into the confines of a 45 minute talk. Software systems are not isolated systems and their entropy can be decreased (by putting in energy from the surroundings). This necessarily has a cost. Examples include: (1) Deprecating and removing a feature (at the cost of losing that feature). (2) A breaking change release (at the cost of forcing adjustments to all interfacing systems affected by that breaking change). (3) A refactor (at the cost of regressions, which are essentially the same thing as an inadvertent feature removal/breaking change release). In total, entropy can only ever increase. The Admins and Engineers pouring their energy into the software system in question are not getting any younger doing so!

Very entertaining and thought-provoking! Without having spent any time with systeminit (SI), I'm wondering how the model implementations are different from compositions of Kubernetes operators, such as those that Crossplane provides. Also, on a different train of thought, I'm wondering how these models avoid the problems of the dreaded mocks.

@QuadmanSwe6 ай бұрын
Calling desired state the single source of truth is not entirely accurate. Discarding desired state config because the truth is in the infra is a bad argument against DSC even if digital twins has other merits as well. Every model is wrong, some are still useful.
