Putting "The Lick," and any other lick, in context is so helpful. It seems like an obvious thing to do when you're attempting to teach something, but it doesn't always happen.

Thanks for that kind reflection Andy! Love using the gospel classics for examples cause so many folks know them, and it can be relatively approachable to pop a good device in there and swing right back to the familiar melody. 😀🎶

I use my middle finger to play the flat 5 and 4 when sliding down - you lose some of the slidiness but it’s easier to play this way imho if your struggling

I don't even mess around anymore. If Chris says something will help and you should do it, I just go ahead and do it. No argument. I've been following the three pillars concept he's always carrying on about for roughly 5 months now. I'm talking about Mary-had-a-little-lamb and the grunt work and the whole 9.😊 Constant improvement is what I have seen. I'm now learning intermediate and advanced stuff and am finally losing the beginner hamfist and developing that light touch that is needed to sound good. I credit the grunt work. Thanks again Chris.

I love to read and know all this David! Thanks for taking the time to share all of that. I hope some other folks are encouraged by reading what you wrote here. With the good healthy discipline, the three pillars are really the ticket!! so glad to know you have buckled down for months and are seeing the long term gains come to fruition! keep er goin!! :D

The downstrokes were a game changer for me. It really helped me get more into that wrist movement and allowed me to see over all speed gains pretty quickly. Everyday taking some time to run the scales and patterns all down strokes. 👌🙌🏼

Excellent advice, as always! One question: Do you see the ultimate goal as being able to do everything without anchoring your wrist? I have a hard time doing that--I always want to rest my hand on the bridge--but I see that it can slow you down.
@ChrisHenryVideos13 күн бұрын
thank you Andy! I would say floating could be "an" ultimate goal - not necessary, but something to experiment with. I feel like it can open up some channels energetically to have the ability. See what you reckon! :D

@@ChrisHenryVideos Thanks, Christopher. I'm heartened to know it's not mandatory, because it's so damn difficult for me. But I will definitely practice getting better at it. Thank you so much for all you do.

I can understand practicing in G and A because they are common keys. But is there a specific reason to practice in G#?
@ChrisHenryVideos13 күн бұрын
Yes! Very reasonable question. It might be the most challenging key, kinda like swinging a bat with weights on it. Excellent grunt work to strengthen fingers!!
@rickwalker32373 күн бұрын
It's a closed position where you have to use little finger instead of open strings. It develops techniques that open Bb Eb Ab and such keys so you aren't list stuck in g,d,a,e,c keys. It also opens up the traditional keys when played in second octave.
@karentowle736913 күн бұрын
Why do you recommend G# patterns?
@ChrisHenryVideos13 күн бұрын
G# I feel is important because it’s much more difficult. When you do G, you kinda get the feel for C, same with A and G, then with G# you get the feel for closed position keys that start on a fretted G string. So if you get comfortable with G#, the rest are a bit easier which can be advantageous. 😀🎶
