“Go back and fix the film.” Why can Disney do that with the Sequels and the Obi wan show??!!!!!
@tsunderemerc29636 күн бұрын
Always fascinating to watch. As much as "fans" may hate the changes, it's George's movies and he had the right to do with them what he pleased. A lot of that stuff was always supposed to be there, so it's silly that people demand we get an older, unfinished cut of the movies. And even if the dance number and Jedi was changed it's still a bunch of goofy little creatures doing a jazz number, or Greedo firing first because it was always clear Han was acting in self defense. Even if he shot first it was obvious that Greedo intended to kill him there, and he says as much to Jabba.

28:27 I watched these documentaries every time I popped my copies of the Special Editions into my VHS player back in 1997. But there definitely wasn't a clip of Dennis Muren eluding to the prequels...

"Rocky V" has taken a ton of shit over the years and has been considered the weakest entry in the original six. Had Stallone directed it instead of John G. Avildsen, this film would probably be getting the same Director's Cut treatment "Rocky IV" got. As it stands, there's a workprint cut of "Rocky V" featuring deleted scenes that would've made the movie better than how it turned out.

This version of "Gonna Fly Now" has a funk-jazz groove to it that's, frankly, not present in the official studio release.

Sometimes, a lack of funding breeds creativity - which I would argue is what made the original version so groundbreaking. Even today, the older version is what I want to see - to remember the feeling of the film as it was in the theater in 77. To me, the 'special' edition is a slap in the face to the original design/special effects team who worked their asses off and who won Oscars for their incredible work.

I think watching this documentary hammers home the main issue I have with the special edition changes. It's not really the changes or that there are several different versions of the original star wars trilogy. that actually makes watching star wars fun. But the lack of a good high quality version of the original trilogy in it's unaltered form hurts the genuine passion that went into these changes. If Lucas had just done a remaster of the unaltered trilogy and preserving both those cuts and the special edition I don't think there'd be any real issue with the changes Lucas made over the years. But because Lucas withheld it and Disney has no plans of re releasing them either there is an argument for Lucas basically destroying his art by keeping the unaltered cuts lost to time.

I see the "Special Editions" as a "What if Star Wars had more money with next generation computer graphic technology and George could put in more stuff and changes in Star Wars?". He didn't need to, to be honest. I don't think he appreciated the film-making limitations he had. But I can respect that he had a bigger vision with Star Wars. So I can look at the original and the Special Editions as a "What If". Thank goodness I can see them both.

The Special Editions foreshadowed the utter disaster of the Prequels, which made Lucas sell to Disney, giving us now Disney Woke fake Star Wars.
@TrentPruitt19972 ай бұрын
Well I think with better dialogue, the Prequels would’ve been absolutely incredible, I still love them. But I do agree, Disney has no damn idea what to do with this franchise. There have been some good stuff here and there but it’s mostly been a misfire.

There’s a special place in my heart for the 97 special editions as someone who was 10 years old at the time and experiencing the films for the first time ever. But looking back at this, man those Mos Eisley sequences look pretty horrible.

The peak of my childhood nostalgia factor was seeing the original trilogy on the big screen and discovering this documentary on the making of the 1997 Special Edition. It's still facinating to revisit despite the criticisms of 'fixing' the films. At the time, this was a big deal. I happily embraced 90% of the changes let alone seeing the films in a much better restored condition on the big screen. I'll never forget the experience.
