I met him once, back stage at a 'Woman's Heart' concert in Bristol - just before Carmina were due to record our first album in Dublin - he said 'I'll be recording just down the road from you, so if you'd like me to join you it'll be a pleasure'. It never happened, due to the very tight schedule we had when we recorded 'Weather in the Heart', with Donal Lunny producing. It was no-one's fault, but I've regretted it to this day and always will - he was the fore-runner, the man who showed that it was possible to play Irish music on the guitar - which in theory (and in practice) is very difficult, as Irish music is based on the 5th interval, and the guitar is tuned in 4ths. He makes it look so effortless - but we are watching here, and in all his later recordings, a true musical genius at work, a player who embodies the music - who IS the music. He plays the music from within, not from without - I mean he is not imposing the guitar on it, but somehow finding from within the guitar the way to play what many of us had felt was both impossible and inappropriate. God bless him.

This guy is a young fiddler, not easy to stand in front of the jury at Gheoil and many people there listening, give him a chance, surely in a session he will be more relaxed!

I lived in Dublin from '75 to '79 when all this was happening, best years of my life. What a great band...but wouldn't have been quite as great without Alec's amazing bouzouki accompaniment.
