Hello what length and fly weight would you recommend on these small streams? I have a 8ft 4 weight, 6ft 3 weight and 10ft 3 weight and 9 ft 6 weight?? Kind regards

Hello, what fly rod would you recommend. 10ft 3 weight or 6ft 3 weight for dartmoor. I saw the gentleman from snowbee fly fishing dartmoor with a short leader with a 10 ft rod on the small streams and it appeared to work perfectly.

so the trout only sees the legs of the fly or the bottom of the fly until it is on top of the trout to where she see all of it ??
@PaulKenyonFFD5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your question. Trout are able to see parts of an insect or artificial fly that rest on - or puncture - this 'mirror'. The bodies of emerging flies break through the water surface. They hang beneath the mirror. The legs of duns rest on the surface. Therefore parts of an insect are visible to fish long before the insect has entered the trout's window. In addition, Marinaro (1995) and Hewitt (1948) as well as Clark and Goddard (1980) have provided photographic evidence that trout could see the wings of approaching insects in their window. For more details see: www.flyfishingdevon.co.uk/how-does-a-trout-catch-a-fly-mobile03.html

so as the fly drift over head to wards the trout . the trouts drifts with it as it get in closer in the window and then eats it???? am I getting it????
@PaulKenyonFFD5 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's right. Here is the explanation from my article at: www.flyfishingdevon.co.uk/how-does-a-trout-catch-a-fly-mobile03.html Marinaro's and Clark and Goddard's photographs show that when an insect reaches the edge of the trout's window, a crucial event takes place. The wings, body and legs of the insect merge together. Marinaro (1995) summed up his extensive observational studies of trout feeding behavour as follows: "It is an inescapable conclusion that the trout places the fly always at the edge of the window for all purposes: viewing, inspecting and taking"(Marinaro, 1995, p. 20) "Why does the trout keep the fly at the edge of the window?" Trout behave in this way in order to judge the exact position of the fly. By keeping the fly in a precise position relative to its body, the trout stands a very good chance of engulfing the insect.

Why are you casting downstream? In almost every scene? Should be upstream or 45 degree never dead on downstream irregardless of method be it streamer, nymph or dry fly. Even wet flies 45 degree and let it swing rather then dead on downstream. Anyhow, tight lines!
@PaulKenyonFFD5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment Nemanja. I have reviewed this video. One scene features an angler casting a dry fly upstream. The other scenes show anglers casting a wet fly across the narrow river to allow the current to swing the fly across the river. Best wishes.

@PaulKenyonFFD8 жыл бұрын
Hi Toby, the angler in that section of the video is very experienced but - like you- did not have any success that day despite carefully searching the seams and tail of the main current with a dry fly followed by a beadhead nymph fished duo-style. Fishing on the Rake beat can vary from day to day, good one day, dour the next. I have seen this several times with very skillful anglers. So maybe the best tip I can offer is to persevere and cherish the good days when they come along.

hi paul, is this on the passport? Small flies and duo as a guide?
@PaulKenyonFFD8 жыл бұрын
+toby232 Hi Toby, Yes, the Yealm beat can be booked through the Passport scheme. Small flies (e.g. Sparkle Dun, X-Caddis ), duo method can be productive especially if there is no surface activity. A wet fly swung down-and-across can save the day (e.g Greenwell Spider, Partridge & Orange, Black & Peacock Spider, or beadhead) More details of the Yealm on: www.flyfishingdevon.co.uk/ and in the Collections section of my Google+ page at: plus.google.com/+PaulKenyonFFD/posts
