I come back to this video every few years because I love this music and the way you just selected the scenes and the dialogue pieces you chose to leave it. I love both shows. I think I like BBC Sherlock a little more just because I felt it was more true to the novels b obviously in a modern way. But you can’t really compare the two shows to each other. I don’t think anyway. But never take this video down. I love it. 😊❤

I’m sure I watch this year is ago when it was on TV originally, back in 2011, but now it is on start TV. I just saw the series finale and sat here crying my eyes out. I am what is called an HSP, highly sensitive person, and I cry in commercials, but this episode made me cry more than I could ever remember with the exception of when I lost some loved ones. What a series!! The best writers and the best actors. Too bad there’s nothing like this on TV anymore.

I haven't finished Elementary yet, but I already thinks its the superior show. It actually has crime solving, where Sherlock's conclusions are mostly reasonable. BBC's Sherlock deduces that Watson has a brother who is an alcoholic based on some scratches on his phone...

TWD after Season 2 went downhill super fast. By Season 6, it was unwatchable IMO. Falling Skies was pretty consistent in quality, which I place on par with Season 2 of TWD.

So this is pretty old (roughly 8 years ago lol) but after watching both BBC Sherlock and Elementary, I will admit that Elementary is my personal favorite adaptation of Sherlock. Buckle up, I’m gonna write an essay. Some context: I watched BBC Sherlock at the height of its popularity, so around 2013-2014. It was popular, especially on Tumblr, and for good reasons: the cinematography is amazing, the characters are entertaining, and the dialogue was witty. Watching Sherlock go around and be this intellectual, snarky detective was fun. No doubt about it. And around this time, Elementary was getting its start. When Elementary came up on my radar, I never gave it a go because at the time, I heard so many awful things about it from other Sherlock fans. These are the same fans who also yell about progressiveness and representation of addiction and "potential LGBT characters." Yet they were also the same ones that called the idea of a female Asian John Watson as "gimmicky” and "going too far,” despite the fact that there has been numerous adaptations of Sherlock and having John Watson being female and Asian was not something far fetched (hell, Sherlock had been adapted as gnomes before. There has been Japanese and Korean adaptations of Sherlock in which both leads were women). Now, I'm not trying to get political or any of that; I don't want arguments. I am just stating that there was a clear sense of hypocrisy among these people who I had once connected with over a mutual love of Sherlock. But here’s the thing: even the people WORKING ON BBC SHERLOCK weren’t exempted of this type of behavior. Louise Brealey (Molly Hooper), who claims to be a feminist herself, called the casting of Lucy Liu as Joan Watson "gimmicky." Martin Freeman (John Watson) even called Lucy Liu a dog on live television and then brushed it off as a ‘joke.’ While I wasn’t fully aware of how strong the discriminatory words were was against Elementary back then, I can fully say now that I have seen the receipts and they are appalling. Now fast forward to March 2020. Everyone is under quarantine, including me. I finally got Netflix (yes. it took me that long). And saw that BBC Sherlock was on it. Got washed over with a wave of memories. And went on Tumblr for that nostalgia kick and came across a post about Elementary and how it was a good Sherlock adaptation. Well I had way too much free time on my hand now. so I thought I would finally give the show a chance. It's a good show. Were there some issues with it? Yes, of course. It’s not perfect, and I will admit that the first few episodes didn't hook me right away. But as I kept on watching it, I became really invested with the characters and the story. I think one of the biggest appeal to the original Sherlock stories by Arthur Conan Doyle was his crime solving, deductive skills; the different mysteries and how he solved them, the twists and turns. I think Elementary captures that really well. The thing with BBC was that once they introduced Moriarty, it seems as though every crime was linked back to him. While I get the appeal, I will admit that it gets boring because by then, you know or get the feeling that it's going to be Moriarty behind it. For Elementary, that's not the case. Yes, Moriarty is part of the story but isn't the genius mastermind behind every single crime that Sherlock solves. Moriarty is a core facet of Sherlock's life, but is not the center of it. What is the center of Sherlock’s life (in Elementary) is his relationships with others. Yes, Sherlock is not a "nice" person. Even in Elementary, he is still scalding and outright rude because he is just so smart that everyone else seems so slow in comparison. But there was one episode in season 2 that I really enjoyed, where after being called out by Joan for his behavior, he acknowledges this aspect of him. He admits that he is difficult to work with and that this can be a massive turnoff to a lot of people, especially those on the force. But Sherlock doesn't put the blame on the officers or other detectives for being "incompetent" or "dumber than he is," but sees that they're all competent and intelligent in their own ways. Sherlock admits that he holds a lot of respect for Gregson and Bell and it shows. He doesn't belittle them nor does he see them lesser than he is. He appreciates them and their input. Even when Joan gets something wrong or misses a clue, Sherlock doesn't make fun of her. He just tells her to look again (perhaps from another angle) and encourages her to do so. Sherlock isn't like this from the beginning, no, but he GROWS and DEVELOPS over the seasons. And that’s one of Elementary’s strongest points: its characters. You can have a show with great cinematography and a flashy plot, but without characters that the audience can feel for, it doesn’t work. BBC Sherlock has good characters that people care for, but Elementary also has characters that people can root for. I rooted whenever Sherlock grows as a person and begins to connect more with those around him. I rooted whenever Joan points out a clue that Sherlock might not have noticed and calls him out on his bs. I love Sherlock and Joan and Bell and Gregson, because they feel real and tangible; they have their own lives and feelings OUTSIDE of Sherlock. Sherlock isn’t perfect; everyone is impressed by him, but they’re not in awe of him. He is human. He may be intelligent and appear impenetrable to criticism, but he is also troubled and he fails. He constantly gets called out by Watson, Bell, Gregson, even Moriarty. Sherlock is surrounded by a cast of interesting, smart, damaged, and human characters which fans come to know and love (big thanks to the time allotted for us to get to know them). They aren’t there to simply shine a light on Sherlock, because they are allowed to be their own being. (Also…no shade but to be honest, Sherlock is ingrained with a lot of underlying sexism and racism that shouldn’t be a thing considering it’s supposed to be a MODERN adaptation of Sherlock but I digress). So yes, I do think Elementary is the stronger modern Sherlock adaptation. But again, this is just my opinion.

i 100% appreciate this analysis. Please do this professionally because your look at both shows is extremely flawless. I agree that Elementary is a stronger one too. The both had amazing runs!!
