Thanks a lot!! Glad you liked it! The subjectivity of it is what makes music so fun. This has been one of my favorite recent episodes, but I really did debate Folie A Deux or Save Rock And Roll too. Honestly, they just don't make much bad music so we had to be a little critical wherever we could 😂

thanks for going into their lyrics,, not even Pete does that he's either a fascinating lyricist or a garbage human being, nd i hope it's the former
@spinitpod5 ай бұрын
Thanks for listening!! Lyrics are a huge part of most albums so we love to dive into them and figure out what's up. I think Pete's definitely got a way with words and I'm sure they just reflect how he felt at the time. Seems like he's matured a lot over the course of their records; Cork Tree I think has a more youthful/inexperienced perspective. He was only in his mid-20s when he wrote most of these lyrics!
@jobantwisp60605 ай бұрын
@@spinitpod fair enough! to clarify, i think everyone's a little bit garbage, nd he could've simply been a highly self-aware person writing down thoughts that are not uncommon to struggling young adults/teens. in this case, while it's nothing i'd encourage my child to listen to, it still denotes a laudable way with words, nd he's matured either way. Maybe, though, he didn't mean much of what he wrote, instead carefully showcasing nd exposing mainstream media's relationship with& effects on the album's target audience. i tend to overthink things nd am probably wrong, but listening to the album with this frame of mind (the best examples being lawyer& sophomore slump) can be quite transformative.

Long comment incoming: Okay, the Oh Hellos are my absolute favorite band of all time and so I greatly enjoyed hearing your analysis and the way you picked up on so many themes of the album! This album is an amazing introduction to the band lol Just some interesting facts about the other albums: Through the deep dark valley is a retelling of the story of the prodigal's son from the Bible, with perspectives given from every party with songs such as "like the dawn" and "eat you alive being from the perspective of the father, "wishing well", "in memoriam", and "the lament of Eustace Scrubb" (another C.S. Lewis reference to the voyage of the dawn treader) being about the prodigal's son himself, and "the truth was a cave" about the son who stayed. The oh hellos next four albums after dear Wormwood are all interconnected, and named after the Greek gods of the wind, the Anemoi. When played in order, Notos, Eurus, Boreas, and Zephyrus tell a story of deconstruction of modern religion. In Notos, the speaker recognizes the performatice nature of modern religion, with references to the tower of babel and the great flood to symbolize the cleansing of the soul. Eurus is the deconstruction, recognizing the flaws of the ways, the focus on riches that cannot be brought beyond the grave, and the speakers realization that they have feuled the fire of the very thing they now disdain, realizing they have only been further "pushing the spear into [Jesus's] side". With Boreas comes the pain and depression of change. While it is cold and lonely, they begin to recognize beauty they've been blind too before. They find that "it would feel like rebirth out of some kind of dying" to truly become who they want to be. Finally, in Zephyrus, with reference to Moses, they find a desire to bring more to the realization they have found. They want to spread pure joy and healing to others who have been swept up in the performative religion. The album ends with one of the most important songs: "Rounds". It is a not simply a bookend, but a connected ending and beginning to not only the other three albums, but dear Wormwood and through the deep dark valley as well, which brings me to the thing that you may have been missing from Dear Worwood in your analysis: the cyclical nature of change. Every oh hellos album carries deeply routed themes of cycles, but they do become especially prominent in the Anemoi albums. They depict the ebb and flow of change. The growth and the relapse. The departure and the return. It is definitely something that is easy to miss if you are not familiar with the entire discography. This is reflected throughout Dear Wormwood, and even within the allegory of the abusive relationship. Healing is not linear, and you will often switch a bittersweet longing for the past, and a strong determined path forward. This is the reason that the album often returns to the same points more than once, but never in the same way. This is because, as it later gets described in "rounds", though it is all a cycle, you grow better and stronger with each rotation. This can also be connected as another reference to a C.S. Lewis book, particularly the ending of the Last Battle from the chronicles of Narnia. In which entering Aslan's country, when one travels further up and further in, things only continue to get better and better. Each cycle is better than the last. Each cycle is easier than the last. Each chapter is better than the one before it. Anyway, sorry for the monster of a comment, I am absolutely INSANE about the Oh Hellos and I could talk about them forever. I really enjoyed the podcast episode so thank you so much for taking the time to create it :D

I found Florence through movies. First from the Snow White and the Huntsman, then i thought the voice sounded familiar through the Great Gatsby trailer. I did a search on KZbin, and i got hooked. Truly a unique group who actually care about the work they do. The only time i heard Florence on the radio was when i traveled out of state. Heard very little of Dog Days while in South Carolina.

Absolutely one of a kind. You're spot on, feels like they focus on the music and art first and let the rest of the chips fall where they may. Didn't realize they did work for Snow White and Gatsby!! But yeah, definitely have heard them more in other media than on the radio. Here's hoping that changes!

very enjoyable listen! i'd be interested to see what you think of the demo versions of the songs
@spinitpod Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much!! Only half of us have heard the demos so far, but I love 'em. It's always really interesting to see behind the curtain and witness just how much a song can grow and develop from concept to demo to release. They kinda serve as a reminder that you don't have to have everything perfect or in-place as you create; things can always change in time. And for me, I think it's cool to see just what a little love, care, and production can do for a track. Sometimes you hear a song and go "wow, I'm not sure how they'd even go about writing that" and sometimes that feels a lot more clear with the demos. (And Demos II? Incredible.) 😁
@altereagle Жыл бұрын
@@spinitpod are there any demo versions that you like better than the final studio ones? and agree, demos ii is so good. my personal favourite is pin! i feel like it has more of a vibe to their older stuff (which is probably why i like it)
@spinitpod Жыл бұрын
@@altereagle Pin's a classic! It's up there with Chapstick, Ease Up Kid, and Elephant Boys for me but I think it definitely takes the cake. I listened to this one at a very impactful/important time in my life so it's got a lot of sentimental punch. As for what's better... maybe none. I think a lot of them have a great sound but lyrics and arrangements get major facelifts for the final cuts! Doubt is cool, Why Even Try is probably closest to what I'd call "better." It's different enough from the studio version but maintains a lot of the same elements and shows off their instrumental skill in a pretty raw way.
@altereagle Жыл бұрын
@@spinitpod thank you for your very through response! i love hearing about people's opinions on the final cut v. demos. you obviously know your stuff when it comes to production and sonics so it's cool to get your opinion on it. i personally have a spot for the doubt demo, especially that new chorus (i'm a big lyrics fan). speaking of lyrics you guys mentioned the line in bubbles about the tourniquet and i agree, bit of a weird line and definitely doesn't show how good their lyrics can actually be.
@spinitpod Жыл бұрын
Doubt is top tier in Demo and Master form! I think their lyrics really only get better with time... LP3 and Good Dog Bad Dream have some really incisive lyrical moments that blend really well with their humor and funky, poppy style.

Fun, honest review. Would like to respectfully correct something though. You stated that the guitarist kept saying "we" when referring to touring and that bugged you because he would I been 5 when they started touring? That guitarist is Chris Caffery and has indeed been with TSO from the very beginning. And with Savatage before that, all the way back to the early 90's. It sure he'd be flattered to hear that you both thought he was a MICH younger man the he really is though. Lol Also... It doesn't matter where you see TSO. The weird, subdued vibe is EVERYWHERE. What started as Sava"Tux" has turned into TS-"OLD!" 😁
