So, I struggle right now with calculus and I have to prepare for exam. I was scrolling through Reddit and saw your link to this video. I like the fact that you make calculus fun and enjoyable. Thanks a lot! God Bless You!

Hi. I understand clearly the answer. But I also came across the integral of 1/sqrt(x^2-1)dx =arccos(x), thus implying the derivative of arccos (x)=1/sqrt(x^2-1) also. Is that somehow the same as -1/sqrt(1-x^2)? Can you reconcile the two as the same? I can’t seem to, although I am rather a beginner at this. Much appreciated if you can offer an explanation.
@DrWeselcouch24 күн бұрын
Those are not the same. I'm guessing you made a small mistake in your work.
@sdlau0524 күн бұрын
@@DrWeselcouch Thanks for your reply. Clearly in your differentiation I can see the derivative of arccos(x)=-1(1-x^2)-1/2. In my other searches, quite convincingly they showed that the integral of 1(x^2-1)^-1/2=arccos(x); thus, implying the derivative of arccos(x)=1(x^2-1)^-1/2. In the KZbin catenoid soap film problem by George Paily, titled "Method 1 for solving the catenoid problem in the calculus of variations", in the very end of the video, he wrote that the integral of 1/constant (C1) times (V^2-1)^-1/2 dV=1/constant (C1) times arccos(V), thus implying the derivative of arccos(V)=1/sqrt(V^2-1). Also, the KZbin video titled "Integral battle #11, the theta world!" by blackpenredpen, the guy showed that the integral of 1/sqrt(x^2-1)=lnIx+sqrt(x^2-1I, using Sec^2( )-1=tan^2( ) as substitutes. Where on my google search at socratic.org>trigonometry>proving identities, the guy showed in the proof that Arccos (x)=ln(x+sqrt(x^2-1)); thus, inferring to me that in the reverse process the derivative of Arccos(x) must=1/sqrt(x^2-1). They seem logical. Just wish I can understand better where the problem in understanding lies.

@@sdlau05 I think I see your mistake. You are mistaking the arccosh(x) function (here cosh(x) is the hyperbolic trig function.) with arccos(x). The first function is what was used in the Paily video and BPRP video. My video discusses arccos(x).
@sdlau0523 күн бұрын
Thank you very much!!! I didn’t know they are different; one for the hyperbolic function and the other for the circle. I thought they were just different preferences of spelling for the same thing, like colour in Canada and color in the US. 😢 Saved me a lot of headache!

The funny thing is the i way i calculated it was so much less complex and used less accurate ways but i only had a %error of 4% i got 31.25 m^-2 (i was just watching a video where is person was doing a dropper and i wondered what the gravity was so (i screen recorded a fall put it in editing software to get 0.4 seconds fall time for 5 blocks or 5m, used v=∆y/∆t (5/0.4)=12.5ms^-1 then i differented the formula to get a=∆v/∆t (12.5/0.4)=31.25ms^-2 (so pretty close))

@@DrWeselcouch but I am tempted to actually create a model that represents a velocity time graph and differentiating the function to determine the acceleration as it will be far more accurate as it represents multiple different displacements

I think you just need a slightly bigger area, try it about twice to thrice bigger, not only would this make the circle look more circular it should help with numbers better as you can fit more slimes in and thus having a more robust model, it will certainly get you way more closer to 3.14 vs the 3.28 that you got.
