This album is a good example that less is more. Even though it contains not that much music from the movie, and mostly concert arrangements, I think it is vastly superiour to the complete soundtrack release that came out 20 years later. Williams picked the pieces that work the best without the picture and created an album that has no weak spots.

I’m pleased to say I’m retired from a very blessed and busy career as a studio singer during which time I was privileged to sing on the score for Close Encounters. I told John on a break how much I loved Star Wars and he just smiled and answered “It was a lot of work!” No doubt about that. Aside from being a brilliant and prolific maestro, he’s such a nice man and unbelievably humble. His beautiful music never fails to give me goosebumps. 91 yrs of age and still going strong! Thank you, sir, for every note.❤❤❤

John Williams has this unique and awesome gift of taking whatever you are seeing on screen and the emotions you are feeling from that particular scene and then making that scene in song form and turning your emotions into music. In scary scenes the music sounds like fear, terror and uncertainty. In magical moments, the music sounds magical, childlike and hopeful. In heartbreaking scenes the music sounds tragic, heartbreaking and gut wrenching. In cool fight scenes the music is epic, badass, dramatic, filled with anxiety and sometimes heartbreaking. He truly is such a gift to man kind.
