You guys will not believe this...and honestly, if I hadn't seen it myself..I wouldnt...on a flight from Columbus to New Hampshire I saw a jet flying the opposite direction at nearly the same elevation...and I could make out the windows in the plane..it was that close...cruising altitude.

Happens all the time. As long as it's at a different altitude and heading, no problem. Used to see this a lot when flying Concorde.

I am currently flying Piper Cherokee's, we fly around 115 mph in cruise, which is nothing in aviation. If another Cherokee were to head on pass us (it happens a lot), at the same speed, our Velocity Closure (Vc) rate would be 230 mph, and that is just for single engine trainer aircraft! Once you get into jet aircraft Vc rates go well past Mach 1.

That's possibly 1700 KMPH relative to the camera-plane. WOW! That's slightly faster than the rotation speed (~1600 KMPH) of the Earth at the equator.

And - that is why pilots maintain a certain altitude and don't deviate unless instructed by air traffic control.
