The track to Pretoria Pit was a road capable of taking farm tractors and small lorries. Much of the pit Ruckings was removed to proving ballast for mortorways. Peel Holdings also owns The Manchester Ship Canal and much of its land either side. John

Bent as older folk know it. From Chowbent probably the oldest part of the town. A Coal and Cotton town more mines and cotton factories then I could count. The men went darn Pit the girls inta mill when they left school. Now none left. Nail making was another old industry and now we have a few light engineering centers. John

hairs on the back of my neck, am from north wales but lived in Atherton back in the 90s, i always remember an old chap with a scruffy dog smoking a pipe telling us under the concrete cap 344 people lost there lives... we all thought he was trying to scare us, naive and not knowing the history we didn't know any better... am glad there's a memorial in place now, i never knew how much history there was there street names schools etc linked to the mines there... its the same here in Wales our slate and metal mines like community un breakable, i always wounded how good society could be if the common people could stick together like we did then?? when i played there to there was a lovely iron fence around that cap missing a few bars here and there to for extra patina

They are viewing platforms. They look awful.

They could have done something better, maybe railway sleepers

Great talk on the disaster for ex miners a lot of the info very informative but some of the people were a little bemused on mining terms and techniques ..

Great video thanks for sharing. Do you have any information on the colliery that was just off leigh road. There are 2 large ponds next to each other and I believe this land was once a quarry. People of westhoughton call the land open cast.

Strange thing, I was born on Maple Crescent in Atherton, started my early life in Farnsworth, then moved to Pretoria in South Africa. It was only last year I found out about this mine and its name. One of my friends in SA found out that I had lived in this area and told me of the mine, and how it got its name.

Thank you for posting. Some great memories of my home town. So sad to see all those shuttered shop fronts..the place appears to be on its last legs.
@ianbrownbydrone.alsoonface32393 жыл бұрын
The town is thriving at the moment, due to the night life mainly. Due to covid it looks worst then it really is. I will do another video next year went the street is buzzing.
