Wow! What a wonderful way of teaching. I'm from India. I have 2 doubts. Here in exams we're asked to name the parts of speech in the sentences. e.g. I enjoy reading. Swimming is a good exercise. Should we say reading and swimming nouns or gerunds. Since parts of speech doesn't include gerund. Should teachers teach, I - pronoun, enjoy - verb, and reading - noun? Swimming - noun, is - verb..... Also please tell me if we can say, an infinitive is a verb which preceded by a preposition 'to'. (to read, to - preposition and read a verb).
@alisasafari5355
@alisasafari5355 7 күн бұрын
Thank you for your questions. 1) You can say: "I - pronoun, enjoy - verb, and reading - gerund, which functions as a noun." Similarly, for "Swimming is a good exercise," swimming is a gerund acting as the subject of the sentence. While parts of speech don’t officially list "gerund" as a separate category, it’s important for students to understand that gerunds are verb forms functioning as nouns. 2) Actually, it's not quite accurate to say that "to" in an infinitive is a preposition. In this context, "to" is part of the infinitive form of the verb, not a preposition. For example: "I want to read a book." "to read" is the infinitive, where "to" is just marking the verb "read" in its base form. On the other hand, "to" can function as a preposition in other cases: "I walked to the store." (Here, "to" is a preposition showing direction). In summary, "to" in an infinitive is not a preposition; it's just part of the infinitive structure.
