Just came across your channel. I like the kind of books you talked about, character driven but with lots of history. I don't know what books you discuss, but i would recommend a 1986 ""The Autobiography of Henry VIII, with notes by his fool Will Somer" A great book, and what an intro to those days and the mind of someone like Henry Viii. Lots of research, but really a great read. With the 2nd part of Wolf Hall coming out on PBS/BBC in 2025 (the Mirror and the Light), this would be a good time to brush up on Tudor England. Wolf Hall, Bring up the Bodies and The Mirror and the Light were all great books, and the TV series covering the first 2 books was fantastic with Mark Rylance as Thomas Cromwell.

Angela I love that you make me think of summer, see summery things when I am experiencing Northern Hemisphere winter. It is cheering

Hi Angela! I’m also Angela. I truly enjoy your reviews and recommendations. I find that the last several years I’ve been reading books for challenges and not enjoying what I have read. I’m not sure why I rush through books. So going forward I’m researching authors and moving away from the top 20. I’m fascinated with Australia and the season reversal. I’m interested in local authors. Thanks for making content. I personally love it. I live in Ohio. Cold weather has arrived. Tonight it’s 19 degrees F.

I definitely consider myself a slow reader, but I'd just love to know where you find people to have these conversations about books because I'd love to do that, but most of the people in my life don't even like to read.

Yes yes yes to seasonal reading in Australia! (I'm in Chicago USA and could really use some summer vibes 🙂). I was tearing up hearing about the kids winning the story contest. 🥲So precious.

I often choose backlist books. The Fair Botanist is now on my list. I read People of The Book and enjoyed it. I like Gearldine Brooks books. The Chaperone was made into a TV show on PBS in the in the US. Might have been a BBC original. The backlist book I’m raving about is Paradise Walk by Mary Malloy. It is part history, part mystery, with the Wife of Bath’s Tale featuring strongly. It was a cover buy at a local charity shop. It almost didn’t make it home with me I put down twice and when I pick it up a third time I knew it must be a keeper. I am so glad it did come home with me after all. It may be difficult to find and online it is pricey. The author has 2 more books featuring the same main character. If you can find a reasonable priced copy do give it a try. It ticked most of my reading boxes.

Ooh I have The Good Wife of Bath on my TBR but have added Paradise Walk also. It sounds wonderful! Thanks!

Oh yes! I enjoy seeing other places. We live in the Pacific Northwest so I’m hunkering down for the rainy season. Our snow is contained to the mountains ( our volcanoes make very good mountains ) Great list of books. Thank you for talking about Stoneyard Devotional it will go directly on my 2025 list. So is Breath and The Well Gardened Mind thank you for chatting about these I’ve been wondering about them. I will look into these on audio. I’m having eye surgery in December and won’t be reading for most of the month. My daughter-in-law offered to help me set up to listen to audiobooks. This was her idea she is very kind and a lovely woman. Enjoyed your chat so very much. Happy Holidays and joyous reading

My best friend lost her father in October, and she is fascinated by the connection between nature, working with our hands, and the mind, so I will definitely be recommending The Well Gardened Mind to her as well as adding it (and several others you mentioned) to my own TBR shelf. Also, definitely curious to hear about the way the seasons are different for you all living in the southern hemisphere. I don't know if I ever realized the seasons were flip-flopped that way, so I'd be fascinated to learn something new in that way.

I hope your friend likes it - it gets deep but I hope she pushes through as I found it quite transformative.

Two things. As a Canadian, I want to hear about your summer picks - helps me to populate my TBR list for June, July and August. And in my experience, a devotional is a resource of snippets, passages, excerpts and short essays that invite you to reflect, maybe meditate and discern meaning for you. Perhaps that’s what Charlotte Wood was thinking when she wrote the Stone Yard Devotional. I look forward to giving it a read. Thank you for your thoughtful reviews -and may I also be fully alive when I die🙏💕🇨🇦

The best book I read in November is Bonjour Tristesse and A Certain Smile by Françoise Sagan with Rachel Cusk (Contributor), Heather Lloyd (Translator). Sagan was a teenage genius! I don't understand how someone so young could write like that. I live in the desert in Arizona and we don't really have much seasonal change other than paradise in the winter and inferno the rest of the year so my reading isn't really tied to the seasons. I love hearing about Australia.

Great video, Angela! Your upcoming Crowded House concert sounds amazing. What a perfect venue. I also read James recently and really loved it. Very powerful read. My favourite read in November was Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard. I’m reading A Time of Gifts by Patrick Leigh Fermor as well and it is also excellent. I would love to hear about your seasonal summer reading, especially as we enter our long winter here in Toronto. All the best.

I also enjoyed James and Stoneyard Devotional though I could see why Orbital won the Booker - thought-provoking, very original and certainly very current. My non fiction book of the month was I am, I am, I am by Maggie O'Farrell - what a tough life she has had and what a beautifully written book. Will finish The Beet Queen by Louise Erdrich soon as part of a project to read more of her books. Enjoing it so far.

Interesting hearing about the best Australian yarn; I had not heard about this type of festival before. Wished we had that here (Baltimore, Maryland, USA). I know what you mean about a popular book that you just don't connect with. I am almost through reading The Real Beatrix Potter by Nadia Cohen. It is fascinating to read about her life during Victorian times and how difficult it was for her to break free of her wealthy parents to do illustrations and write stories. It was hard for her to find a life for herself. I had no idea of her conservation of 4,000 acres of farmland that was part of in the Lake District. Quite an amazing woman. I finished reading The Salt Path by Raynor Winn which was an interesting look at how this couple coped with the man's terminal illness diagnosis, losing their home, and walking this 600 mile trek around southwest England and sleeping outdoors with all its challenges.
