This is so awesome! I remember this from when I was little. Looking at it now. It was before it’s time. Hand drawn animations over real footage of nature. Way way before it’s time.

i was 4 when this was made. i watched it on HBO. My kids would probably laugh their asses off at it...but that bunyip was terrifying.

When I was young, this movie really affected me emotionally. The poor little Joey... I don't know. I guess cause he's so cute, and sad, and helpless, and has lost his mother. Hey! It's Mother's day! I'm going to go make a kangaroo card.

They find him in a sequel. Kinda curious about the dynamic shift if Joey were reunited with Kangaroo because in "Dot and the Rabbit", Kangaroo adopts Rabbit because he has no parents and she believes she'll never see her child again, so Rabbit becomes a replacement. Rabbit is shown to be pretty selfish and kind of terrible in his movie, so I wonder if he would try to get rid of Joey again so he can have all of Kangaroo's attention, and not have to share. Assuming Joey finds his mother.

I literally woke up thinking about this movie from 30 yrs ago. I used to watch on HBO when I was about 8. I would cry cry cry at the end but can't remember why. I want to purchase the DVD so I my daughter can enjoy. Anyone know a website? Good movie :)

Lol. Is she though? She puts herself and Kangaroo in danger multiple times because of her stupidity. Like when she nearly gets Kangaroo killed near the end of the movie because she insists on getting closer to the Aboriginal tribe they come across, even after Kangaroo repeatedly tells her, "No. It's not safe. We need to leave. It's not safe for me." and Dot is like "lol fuck you I wanna stay".
