The scale would be double the distance from the nut to the 12th fret. PRS guitars used the 25" scale because it was between the Gibson 24.75 and the Fender 25.5 scales.

@32:30 I see "edits" didn't quite make it into the final cut, eh mate? lol I found this whilst poking about on the Tube and I relate fully with the painful bits you had going on. I, too, tried sanding tru-oil and it is not until you get to the final coats (after about 20 coats in fact...and about a month of daily coating) that you very fine wet sand and polish it out after it cures for a week or longer. I think the longer you leave it cure in atmosphere, the better it turns out. I tried 2k Gloss Enamel painting a guitar also, and getting "bits" in the finish is just a part of it unless you take very expensive precautions. Nice job for the first time mate...my first attempt wound up falling 20ft and splitting in half. At which point I ordered another kit, took my clamps and glue and told that fuc*ing thing "Ill be damned if you're going in the rubbish bin".

Thank you for posting this honest video you should do more you have a very pleasant manner on screen and you really can play , I can't play guitar but been a chippy for 52 yrs , reason I watched is my GLP style kit arrived a fortnight ago , ordered alternative pickups before it arrived from Axetec { irongear blues engine x 2 } even though I have no idea what is a desirable sound in a pickup { their site has sound demo 's for each pickup and they sounded good to my untrained ear but we will see } Axetec kindly gave me advice too , pots all have very different dc resistances way out just badly made by looking , so also got a jimmy page kit with replacement strings , Im building it as a present for son in law who does play , once again thanks .

Looking good. Instead of sanding to remove the stain or to create lighter areas, use either a little white spirit on a rag (if the stain was oil based), meths if spirit based or water if the stain was water based. You should use a larger cloth too, and when removing stain a lighter coloured one so you can judge how much stain you're removing. If that removes too much, use some dry fine wire wool instead. I dont think you need to worry about shielding humbuckers unlike single coil pickups (as mentioned below).

Hey Andy, have a look for 'wet and dry' paper. If your local DIY places won't do it, ask a local motor factors. The dye came from the same place at the kit, they sell finishing kits as well as the instruments, pop Guitar Kit Fabric into your favourite search engine :) Good luck with the LP build!

Indeed. The wafer thin veneer of this kit was a little limiting on the top. If it had a proper top on it I agree, I would have probably done some more. That said, the dye was sold as 'wine red' and I did fancy quite a deep colour. Cheers for the nice comment!

I don’t know if you have heard of them before or not, but Crimson Guitar makes excellent kits. You can have it built too whatever specs you would like. They can be pricey depending on the woods you pick. I bought a PRS kit from them and it is impeccable in my opinion. Well worth the money I spent on it; also they are in the UK. I live in Oklahoma, and I have taken to building guitars from scratch, but I wanted a guitar from Crimson Guitar that I ordered a kit from them, and I’m happy I did. Watching you sand that veneer top the way you did I just knew you would sand through it, you did good on that. There is also House of Tone pickups in the UK that I really like, I have two sets of PU’s for the Crimson kit, and for a custom design guitar I am starting soon in memory of my Son. Check them out you might be a lot more happier with what they have to offer. Cheers.

I appreciate your willingness to explain what worked and what didn't work for you during this build. One quick note: Yes, a lot of the Asian-sourced, "made-in-hurry" screws with such kits are poor quality. Using soap, bees wax, or screw wax on the screw can make snap offs less likely and help seat the screw more easily.

Yeah, kit pickups have a bad rep, and they usually deserve it. I've got a new kit arriving later today, and I've already ordered some cheap pickups (Guitar Madness railbuckers, less than $30 shipped) that I know will be an improvement. If you can find the pups pulled from an Epi Special II that someone upgraded from on the used market, those are pretty nice too.

Hi Chris, well done from sunny Devon! Question: Would you buy another kit to build a Mark Holcomb-esque model, or just buy an SE? What do you see as the pro's / con's of each? Having owned one I can say they are monstrous guitars - for me the price tag of a Fender Tele Deluxe in Miami Blue makes me wince so I'm giving it a go, but a PRS DGT SE in gold... maybe I'd just buy it...? Keen to know your thoughts.
@cpcmotorsportmedia
@cpcmotorsportmedia Жыл бұрын
Hey Giles, thanks very much. Just going straight for Holcomb SE certainly has its attraction, I believe Mark himself uses those SE models when Periphery tours, so they are clearly reliable, quality instruments! For me though, I wouldn't be attempting to build a replica, or try and achieve a similar result on a smaller budget, but more take the recipe of the pickups and that style bridge to try and create something 'inspired by.' The string through aspect on Mark's models may be a little tricky without a drill press, a similar style top loading bridge from a third party is an option I'm considering. Tele deluxe vs the DGT would come down to that massive plate covering most of the body on the Fender, that doesn't do it for me, regardless of how it sounds I'm afraid!

Hello Tim. It's a good thing that anything aesthetic is subjective eh? It was never my intention to prove anything, however, since you seem to be interested, I think these couple of videos show that even if you have no experience at something, sometimes just giving something a go can be a rewarding experience, even if others aren't a fan of the finished product. The reason why your neck pickup surround didn't sit right is because it's backwards. The thinnest section should be facing the neck on both pickups.

Thank you for sharing your experience with everyone much appreciated. Regarding shielding the jack area, it is recommended not to shield it because when wiring the jack and when plugin the wire in there is a risk of certain issues and leading to failure to have the best sound or even no sound possibility as been highlighted by one of our specialised colleague who deals a lot with tone and produce one of the excellent quality pickups, Dylan Pickups, and on his channel Dylan talks tone on KZbin. Hope this is been useful and it would be appreciated to hear your inputs.
