Where did you connect recovery gear on the first car? so I have an idea incase I come across a situation like this.

Government Wash is now closed to all vehicular traffic. One of the reasons given was that people were setting up camp there and staying for months, with resulting problems of crime (Rangers responded to 1300 incidents in 5 years) and trash strewn everywhere. Another factor cited was the damage to the ecosystem from the large number of user-created "roads" from people driving their vehicles all over the landscape.

Green Pin is the best bang for your buck. Crosby is twice as expensive and their fit, finish and overall quality isn't as good as the Green Pin. Sad to have to say that about Crosby. Skookum shackles out of Oregon are top notch but are spendy, partly since they are an alloy shackle (higher capacity for their size). Both Green Pin and Skookum screw pin shackles have some machining to make them easier to assemble than CM, Crosby, Campbell, Chicago.

Hey there all the way from Australia. I've had this discussion with a mate of mine here and came to the conclusion that if the roller fairlead doesnt have any burrs or nicks in the rollers and you're not pulling on extreme angles, then there is nothing wrong with using it, providing its in good condition and the rollers actually roll well (mine is on an ARB bar on an 80 series Landcruiser. Unfortunately my Warn 9500XDC motor has failed and was in the process of converting it from steel cable to rope, and I was just going to stick with the rollers regardless as I like the look 😄 Time for a new winch, but I'll still be sticking with the roller fairlead.

I just had this discussion with my son. He has a Warn 8500 with a steel cable and the rollers. I have a Zeon 12s with synthetic. We both prefer the looks of the ,Watn 8500 and the roller style, but both are on Jeep TJ‘s. A lot of people want more of a steam lined look but not us. Other than getting that synthetic line caught in the corner, there can be no conceivable advantage from getting away from the rollers. Good content.

It's 10,000lbs of force, not weight. Weight is the value that represents the force something is pushing down on the ground because it's the *mass* multiplied by the gravitational acceleration of Earth. *Mass* is the measurement of the amount of *matter* in an object. That truck has a *mass* of 40,000 lbs. On Earth it *weighs* 40,000 lbs (because we decided to standardize mass by the value it is on Earth, where we live). On the moon, the truck still has a *mass* of 40,000 lbs but the *weight* is lower. So you are talking about* force* when you are mentioning the winch. The reason why the snatch ring doubles the force is because the snatch is pulled at 1/2 the speed towards the winch, while the winch still does the same amount of *work*. So the force is doubled as a result. It's nice that you explain how this works, but go a step further and use proper terminology.

Awesome explanation of weight vs force! Thanks for the clarification. There are actually many factors at play here, including static weight of the vehicle, angle of slope, stiction of mud, actual strength of winch vs torque load reduced by larger diameter of drum with additional wraps of line, reduction of applied force due to loss at pulleys and/or angle to anchors. Many of these can be determined with complicated calculations using the Grade, Cargo, Tackle and Mire Factors. Sometimes we round numbers off and use generic terms to more easily get the point across, just for comparison sake. Truth is, it was a 12k winch (on that vehicle) starting on the last wrap, but the applied torque would be reduced as the drum gets larger with more wraps on it. Each pulley reduces final applied force by about 10%. Truck probably weighed closer to 35k empty. Slight grade may have added a few %, and mud added too. The gist of this explanation was more to explain that you needed an equal and opposite force to recover the vehicle. In this case, we could have pulled the Big Rig out with larger vehicles, but were trying to show that multiple 5,000 pound vehicles could use force multiplication to move a MUCH larger vehicle. These recoveries are not staged or scripted. What you see is the way they really play out, live and unrehearsed. Keep an eye out for the next video of the truck being pulled out by two Jeeps, using two winches! Thanks for watching!

There’s no need to get too scientific here, winches are rated in pounds or kilograms, not newtons because of the simple fact people know what their vehicle weighs here on earth and we are only ever going to use them here on earth. I also remember my first high school physics lesson.
