Vielen herzlichen Dank für dieses ehrgeizige weltweite Dupré-Projekt in Bild, Wort und Ton! Das erste seiner Werke, die ich hörte, war die mich tief beeindruckende Symphonie-Passion, vor allem ihre emotional-theologische Ausdeutung des Kreuzweges. Sobald ich es konnte, versuchte ich mich an den 79 Chorälen - dabei blieb es dann, weil ich lange keine Orgel fand, die dieser Musik gerecht geworden wäre, und die meisten anderen Werke technisch unerreichbar waren und noch sind. Diese Reihe gibt mir einen neuen Impuls, mich wieder auf Spurensuche zu begeben und technisch etwas erschwinglichere Stücke von ihm zu finden.

Dank KZbin kann ich noch immer den Gottesdiensten in St Lukas beiwohnen. Die neuen Pfarrer begeistern mich mit einer neuen Art der Spiritualität und auch die Kirchenmusik ist jetzt wesentlich präsenter. Ich sollte euch wiedereinmal in München besuchen.

Eine sehr spannende und unterhaltsame Reise durch Musik und Leben des Jubilars. Ich kann mich nur wiederholen: Meinen größten Respekt vor dieser gewaltigen Leistung des Schaffens einer Dokumentationsserie, welche zweifelsohne mit anderen ähnlichen Serien dieser Art mithalten kann, und zudem noch kostenlos auf KZbin zum Ansehen verfügbar ist. Man lernt sehr viel über die Musik Duprés, man lernt sogar neue, bisher unveröffentlichte Stücke kennen, aber man lernt auch über die Person hinter dem musikalischen Gewand. Herzlichen Glückwunsch zu diesem tollen Projekt! Auch ich wünsche ein gesegnetes Weihnachtsfest und ein, vor allem, gesundes neues Jahr 2022. (PS: Der Ausdruck "pfiffig" für das Quartet, dessen letzter Satz ja das "Introthema" der Reihe darstellt, ist, finde ich, sehr passend gewählt! ;) )

(1) The disposition of the Jacquot-Lavergne grand orgue at Rouen Cathedral bears absolutely no resemblance of that of American organs of that time. Rather, its tonal concept is completely French, simply being an outgrowth or 19th century French tonal design, with some additional mixtures and mutations, growing from French classical practice. Registers characteristic of American organ building of that time -- whether the Romantic orchestral voices typical of Skinner, or Germanic Neo-baroque voices -- are in Rouen conspicuous by their absence. (2) Rocker-tablet stop controls were in no way typical of American organs of that time; rather, stop knobs were preferred, or their more economical substitute, tongue-tablets (of the type found in cinema organs). (3) George Donald Harrison claimed that his style was a synthesis of those of Gottfried Silbermann and Aristide Cavaillé-Coll. However, careful analysis of Harrison's stopists, scales, and mixture compositions, reveals that neither builder's styles really had anything to do with Harrison's. His true influences appear to have been the British builder T. C. Lewis, and Harrison's friend, the German organ builder Steinmeyer. I suspect that Harrison's claim to a Silbermann/Cavaillé-Coll synthesis was the result of his once meeting Albert Schweitzer, who was a leader in the Alsatian Organ Reform movement, which movement held that as their tonal ideal. French input into Harrison's style were quite minimal -- apparently some from Jospeh Bonnet, filtered by some Germanic perspectives, but little, in anything else.

Many thanks for this unique performance! Speaking of organ concerti written as memorial pieces, my doctoral dissertation document was a critical performance edition of the second organ concerto by Dupré's protègée Rolande Falcinelli: "Mausolée à la Gloire de Marcel Dupré," composed 1971-72. The piece takes the form of a single continuous movement in three sections: Prélude, Fugue, Choral. I gave the work"s first (and so far only) performance at the Women in Music Festival of the Eastman School of Music with the University of Rochester Orchestra in March 2011. I prepared the score and parts in consultation with the composer's daughter, musicologist Sylviane Falcinelli. Plans to publish the score are under development.

Marcel Dupre was an excellent teacher, but one had to do exactly what he wanted artistically, is my impression. He didn't get along well with organists who didn't play the organ exactly as he advocated. I am also pleased that this series is devoted to Dupre and I am curious about the organ works that have not yet been published or are no longer published. It all comes across just fine.

Very interesting to hear these songs at last. I've tried to order copies on several occasions over the years, only to find them "out of print". As I suspected, fhey seem vastly superior to most of his more anonymous earlier works.

Glücklicherweise gibt es Deutsche, die die Arbeit von Dupré hervorheben. Mit den Franzosen ist, von seltenen Ausnahmen abgesehen, nicht zu rechnen!
