WTF, as an example of the importance of tacking on headers you show a boat that got a lift the other boat on the same tack didn't get, which put them102M ahead. At that point you say it gets interesting when the guy ahead starts tacking in the headers to increase his lead when in fact the guy who takes the flyer to the right shrinks the lead to 72M when the "playing the shifts" boat rounds the mark. Yet it is stated that the lead increases to 115M by the time the flyer boat gets to the mark, which is because the lead boat was going downwind while it was still sailing upwind. And all the while the video gets edited to hide the fact this is a poor example.

Could the authors comment on how to show up and run the 1st leg when the course is posted only a few minutes before the start? Is there ever a race in which you have not sailed the 1st leg before the start, or can you clarify whether you are testing the 1st leg vs running the entire leg to the mark every single time?

Probably not the best c420 tactic... It requires too much time for the short upwind legs.

Hey, I used to always hunt for nice flying telltales in the front sail both sides of it. But always noticed my windward pointing was so bad compared to others. Now maybe it's time to shift gear.

Lee bow is not a dick move if it give you an advantage. as long as you are follow rule 2 and any of the rules regarding when boat meet its just tactics even if it does bring a satisfaction smirk of course if you are never in a position in the fleet where lee bow is important you might as well just stick to cruising

Has anyone been able to get the app? When I follow the instructions, Garmin comes up and the Pebble watch (or Pebble Watch 2) is not one of the supported watches. This looks like a dynamite app and watch combo...but. without a working watch and non-existent app, it's a non-starter. Help!

I would like somebody to tell me where in the 2017-2020 rule book it says “boat lengths” - It doesn’t, the correct turn is “hull lengths” as boat lengths refers to the hull and all equipment attached to it (bowsprit) - this would change the outcome of the protest

when i started..........i always sailed up and down from the start line 40 minutes be fore the start ...... so point is left and right shifts..............say at the gun it is on the right..........boats stacked at the commitee boat end............but i would always start at the leeward end....... because i know i will be the first into the LH shift and visa versa of course you have to be on the line a clean..... but sailinginto the fist shift always worked for me

Thanks for the fantastic videos. I'm an experienced sailor (45+ years), I've always been a cruiser. Now I'm getting into racing the Sunfish, which I have sailed since I was 12. So I know the sailing part, but the racing is brand new. Your videos are excellent. Please keep it up. I will start a new 10 week series in 2 days, and I am bringing your RaceQs app with me.

Why does the sailboat goes faster when is in the green zone from another sailboat?
@Jim-ei2iv
@Jim-ei2iv 6 жыл бұрын
It's not so much that the boat in the "safe lee bow" position goes faster. There are at least two benefits to being the boat in that position. First, and the reason most people cite, you're hitting that competitor just behind and windward of you with some really disturbed air. If this were the main benefit, it would be a great tactic in match racing but not in fleet racing. The next reason is the less obvious one, and the one that makes it worth doing in a fleet race. Without giving a lecture on aerodynamics, the boat in the lee bow position is getting benefit from the other boat. You may have heard that your head sail is in a lift relative to your mainsail, which is in a relative header. Well, when two boats are close like this, that concept is expanded. Because of the way air flow works the boat aft and windward causes the boat below and ahead to be sailing in a lift relative to all boats on the course not in a lee bow position. So if you lee bow someone, (1) you slow them down and (2) they give you a lift so you are sailing just a bit higher than other boats in the fleet. It may be brief and last only until the other boat tacks out (which she should do as soon as possible) but in a sailboat race, every little bit adds up! That said, it's still more important to sail your own race. If you would have tacked in about that spot anyhow, go ahead and lee bow someone. If, however, you feel it's a strategic benefit to keep going, then do that. Being on the best part of the playing field is more important than a small gain from a temporary lee bow.

Thanks for the videos! I've got a question for you. When the wind seems relatively steady across the course (e.g., starboard favoured) at the start, do you recommend starting off by sailing into a header or into a lift? In his series on NS14 racing (KZbin) Peter V argues for beginning with the knock, but doesn't elaborate. I understand that if the wind is extremely steady, mirror-image paths to the mark should be equivalent. However, I would expect that one should start by sailing on the favoured side of the wind, *in case* there's a significant wind shift to the opposite tack as one proceeds up the course. (Of course, I'm thinking right now more in terms of macro-shifts, also recognizing that frequent tacking on micro-shifts may also be necessary.) Your thoughts? thanks,

"India…has a really nice tight spread"… so that's why s/he's behind both kilo and Lima with wider spreads? Rather s/he's got a tight spread because s/he's failing to capitalizing on the shifts that are putting kilo and Lima ahead. Not to discount consistency, but I'm not looking to consistently finish 3rd: I think you are reading too much into this.

Hi Scott, SSCBC supplied them with Android phones in the ~ $60 -$80 price range. A slightly cheaper phone didn't get the signal properly. For the Moths we vacum sealed the phones in double layers. An iphone will work really well but this was less risk
