Hey mate, nice build. Great to see the young Fulla is into it too. Only thing I’d say is to switch his seat around so he can see where you’re going. You’ll be able to communicate better and have a much more rewarding experience to share.

@OverlandNZTV2 ай бұрын
Maybe mine's a good one - but it's been no less reliable than any 25 year old Toyota I've owned. Has been a pleasant surprise based on what you read/hear about them on the internet

Did it occur to you to run cable from your starting battery to the rear of the car and fit an Anderson Plug to it and the compressor? That's what I do. But then again, I'm Australian.😅😅😅
@OverlandNZTV2 ай бұрын
I did that in an old 4WD, did solve the bonnet issue but still had to deal with the pump afterwards. Can't remember if I said it in the video or not - the setup I went with is fully overkill but the goal of the build was to be as practical as possible, I'm pretty lazy when it comes to dealing with tyre pressures 😅

100% - annoying to manage two filters but better than having issues. Picked up bad fuel from Te Kuiti a few years back, made it home but took a bit to get it all sorted. I know it's not super common, diesel in NZ is pretty good but since running the two filters I've had no issues since

Will do a 15,000km once I've covered that much ground - have been a little quiet between winter and our second kid arriving a few months ago, should be back into it soon! Have done ~6,000kms on them so far though - pretty happy with them. They work really well offroad, grip way better than the RAZRs in sloppy stuff. On road they're not as nice which isn't really a surprise, tad more slippery in the wet and louder (to me at least, some people claim they're quiet - I think it depends on the car though, they're the loudest noise I get on mine) Will report back once I've put more kms and work onto them though!

I have a 1997 300TDi Discovery in Australia. Bought it with 245000Km on it and now has 408000km on it. The engine is not using any oil between services. I service every 7000km. It's been all over including the old Telegraph track and I have not had one issue with it. Just general maintance as with any vehicle. It is my daily driver. The V8 petrols has some electrical issues. Diesel has no electrics. Also had a 300TDi in NZ before moving to Aus, and that one was just as reliable.
@OverlandNZTV2 ай бұрын
That’s an awesome run out of it - the 300tdi seems to be one of the best Land Rover engines. That’s awesome though! Of course, old cars need a bunch - mines been all good since I sorted the main issues - though haven’t really driven it much this year. I have a Japanese import - so I have the computer controlled injector pump, has been all good so far though

Got to love the comments about "Toyota Reliability". Have had plenty of Toyotas over the years, and can say that my honest opinion is that reliability is directly proportional to the maintenance applied. Doesn't matter if its a 20 something year old land cruiser or land Rover, your going to have the spanners out. I have a 98 Disco 300 TDI with 500,000 klm on the clock, is used daily and have no hesitation in jumping in and driving it from one side of the country to the other on whatever roads we choose. It had issues when we bought it, including a cooked motor the the previous owner had just spent $$$ having it rebuilt professionally, but all of the issues we found were a result of poor modifications or workmanship of non land rover competent mechanics - ie cooked motor from overheating because the Radiator "Specialist" decided that the thermo fan switch was the best place to install a second water temp sender... and didn't install a metal bung in the radiator rather then the plastic one supplied. The Disco is now a comfortable, reliable and capable vehicle - and much cheaper to purchase and repair than an Toyota or Nissan. Our other car is a 2021 Isuzu dmax - again supposedly legendary reliability- and with under 100,000klm on the clock recently come home on a trailer because the front diff exploded. Go figure. Enjoy Disco Life!
@OverlandNZTV2 ай бұрын
It's always interesting seeing the comments around reliability eh - I know Land Rover have made some less than good engines, but the 300Tdi is basically bullet proof assuming it's been looked after. Mine's had a gearbox rebuild too, so not even worried about that. And as you say, it's an old car, things are worn out and need work - it's just Land Rover parts are way cheaper than Toyota ones and they're super easy to work on which is nice. 500,000kms is going well though! That's awesome. I just got back from a 1200km round trip in the Disco with zero issues at all, aside from being a touch slow in a 120kmph headwind - but hey - what's the rush, right‽

@OverlandNZTV4 ай бұрын
I spray as much as I can underneath with a lanolin spray - obviously it can’t get everywhere but it helps. Avoiding driving in salt water helps. And then really really good cleaning when I get home - I spend a few hours flushing every space I can find. I’ve never had any issues with rust though aside from shock mounts getting sand blasted. I just stay on top of that with rust treater and paint. If I were on the beach all day every day it might be different - but as a sometimes thing, it’s been fine. Hope that helps

@OverlandNZTV5 ай бұрын
Cheers! Generally pretty good on the cold nights - aside from a good sleeping bag, having something underneath you that stops the cold from seeping through makes a huge difference, down south a few years back I used a picnic blanket - made a huge difference when it was -6. Setting up/packing down in the wet is a pain - you get wet, there's no way around that. I take my sleeping gear out of it if I'm packing it away wet, save it getting damp. Center of gravity doesn't really worry me, you just get used to it. Though it is nicer to drive without it on I love RTTs though - have a swag I use sometimes and it's just not the same

I can confirm that the bfg ko2 are a bit snakey on wet bitumen and thick mud, pro are low noise, very economical on fuel, high mileage 75k and plenty more to go, outstanding puncher resistance 10/10 🦾, excellent on gravel and sand. I can see why many people can depend on them for getting them home from adventures as they are bulletproof off-road. Let me know your reviews of Falken wildpeak, Razors At or your favorite?

Oh true! I was super happy with the RAZR - did almost everything I needed and lasted a good amount of time. Lost ~50-100kms of range (was getting low 600s per tank - now getting low-mid 500s). Will be interesting to see how they wear, I’m not expecting as many kms as the RAZR but we’ll see

I was looking at these, only thing that put me off was they had no 3PMSF rating and a few bad reviews on the wet. I went with your old tyre the Maxis Razr At on a 35" though. Oh and I also went with the ballistic rims, great choice. And a FYI they are called Kenda Klever "smart " not klever " like the knife " 😂
@OverlandNZTV6 ай бұрын
I’ve (so far) found them just as good as the RAZR in the wet - but we’ll see how they age, I don’t expect them to stay as good their whole lives with the more aggressive tread. Understand that if you need the snow rating there are other options though - makes sense! They’re mint rims eh - still really like them after almost four years of running them
