Persians were not hundred of thousands. Alexanders army was 40-50 thousands wich can be considered as a full elite army. Persians were 70-80 thousand man. 10 thousand elite immortals and 30 thousand strong cavalry wich was the real threat. The rest 30 to 40 thousand man was just man with a axe or sword or spike, they had not that much of a military value. So even with this odds it was not an easy battle for alexander. Because of the 30 thousand strong persian cavalry in an open field. But the Persians were not hundred of thousands.
