Thank you for posting. This is the ship my grandfather was lost on. One of the few bodies that were recovered. Alexander Smith of Lossimouth

The Glen sheil was my Grandfathers boat. He was captain that day and lost his life. He was never found. It would be fantastic to get a small piece of the vessel as a remembrance to him. The only survivor was the only crew member who was a non swimmer. Very strange events happened that day

This is a fantastic vessel and the video does it justice. I am very pleased to see that family contacts with this story are emerging here.

As I understand it my grandfather was posted to U-1274 but was injured during sea trials and never deployed on her.

My father, John William Stacey, was on the destroyer HMS Viceroy L21 which chased the U1274. After attacking the sub with all her depth charges, no debris surfaced so they were unsure whether she was sunk. After re-arming they returned several days later and located the sub, still in the same position. Further depth charges were dropped and a lifebelt canister surfaced. When opened it was found to contain bottles of brandy, one of which was sent to Winston Churchill. I still have a copy of his letter thanking the crew.

+NoctesDiesque I also remember him telling me what a terrible sight it was to see the Athelduke sink.

I am amazed! My father shipped out to Yokohama on the Athelduke in 1933. He recorded the story of his voyage on the Athekduke in 2006 (he died in 2010). He would have been thrilled to see this video. In 1945, he was in the U.S. Merchant Marines (after serving in the British Merchant Marines) and heard about the Athelduke being torpedoed.

Thanks a lot for sharing this, a view into a world I'll probably never see with my own eyes. I guess you need many many years of training and experience to do something like this?
