なつかしいです。I haven't seen the area for good 20 years but trying to figure out where you are driving based on my childhood memories. Judging by 江ノ島 on the left with the 江ノ電 track on the right, you must be driving westbound in the direction from Kamakura/Zushi to Fujisawa. The 江ノ電 looks modernized too, different from how I remember - the classic green/yellow old 江ノ電. 以前, 由比ヶ浜に住んでました。葉山マリーナに自転車で 何度も行ったことあります。 日本に行くと、今でも由比ガ浜を訪れます。ポール先生, 楽しい動画をありがとう。謹賀新年。

The old green and yellow cars of the enoden are still there. Just a few cars have had a different paint job applied. It's a beautiful drive, and back when I lived in Hayama I could even run along there sometimes. LOTS of foreign tourists these days.

How about repurposing akiyas into sharehouses for students? If they volunteer to help rebuild the houses and local infrastructure during a portion their stay, and participate in a some sort of cultural exchange with locals, they can stay there for free. Or also, grant permanent residency to anyone that volunteers to repair and participate in these rural areas. Some sort of incentivization program where foreigners get immigration advantages for helping rural areas, so everyone wins.

Great video and good luck with your dissertation. At the end of this video, your explanation of the extra dimension of interest from living in Japan makes perfect sense to me. Having just failed to pass the first screening for JET I'm looking for other opportunities to be in Japan on a more long-term basis because, when I was there last year, it just felt right.
@Exjapter5 күн бұрын
Sorry to hear JET didnt work out. To be honest, it may be a good idea to try again. JET is a different sort of Japan experience. That said, if you dont mind rural, I know a place where you might be able to apply down in Kyushu where they have had trouble filling a spot through local hiring.
@OldGreyWolf_おおかみ3 сағат бұрын
@Exjapter I absolutely do not mind rural. I actually prefer it over busy, noisy city life. If no other avenues work out before September I will absolutely apply to JET again. I am determined to make a Japanese relocation happen.

Somewhere from up there in Buddha Heaven (or Shinto Heaven), Dikko Henderson is smiling down upon you because while I’ve always avoided the tatami room with washi paper and sliding doors like the plague when looking for a place to live, you went ahead and built one. But instead of “Shimemashite omedeto gozaimasu”, I just gotta say “omedeto” while asking if you were bench-pressing and doing curls before you put on the hoodie-----aka you look solid and more like a wrestling player/coach than a teacher-----aka are you actually the son of “The Destroyer” and used to wear a mask while attending grades 1~12 in order to keep both your and your pop’s true identity a top secret? But-but-but, if I had the wall unit on full blast heater mode, I’d be wearing a tank top or be going shirtless-----aka someday you’ll learn that no matter how much you earn, you never throw away money to TEPCO by using the wall unit in winter for a 6, 8 or 10-mat room in Japan when a small portable electric fan heater can heat up such a room beyond toasty warm for ¼ the cost-----and that doesn’t include the 1,000~2,000 yen cost of said small portable electric fan heater purchased at a recycle shop during the off-season. Looking forward to seeing more of your content in the next life called next year.

I am curious why you would be so adament about avoiding a Japanese style room? I personally love the aesthetic and enjoy changing out the artwork in the tokonoma (not to mention buying new pieces). I wouldnt want my entire house to be that style, but I also appreciate it for the fact the style lends itself to being the least cluttered room in the house as well. Thanks for physique comment. I am a regular in my school's training gym at minimum three days a week. I wouldnt impress any body builders, but I am trying to improve my strength and conditioning. I got more serious about it during the pandemic, figuring by getting as healthy as possible would help me fend off any nasty bugs I might catch.

@@Exjapter Adamant? I like that because like Don Corleone, I refuse to apologize for refusing to be persuaded or to change my mind about liking to live like a full red, white and blue-blooded American while living in Japan-----which until recently also included flying the American flag by driving American sports cars despite the beer cans being welded into the engine block. Maybe it has to do with my formative years in Japan when I lived in military base housing and where like corporate expats, our housing and utility costs were free-----and instead of a tatami room, our houses came with a much tinier maid’s room because at 360 yen to the dollar, we could more than afford to have a live-in JAPANESE maid as well as Japanese houseboys, lawn boys and a chauffeur? Now that’s not to say I never rented an apartment that came with one tatami room. But when that couldn’t be helped, I always immediately covered those tatami mats with a rug so they would look brand new when we moved----aka no landlord ever ripped me off by claiming I had to pay for replacement tatami mats because I knew the secret that instead of replacing the tatami mats, all they did was flip the mats over while pocketing your money. Of course, I may have dated myself with “The Destroyer” reference from the days decades ago when he wrestled in Japan alongside and across from “Giant-O-Baba”. But “The Destroyer” did have a son who attended St. Mary’s International School-----with or without a mask.
@Exjapter5 күн бұрын
Never had a tatami apartment except my JET one, where I wasnt required to pay for new mats because of the public housing rules. I could see how that would be annoying though. More than the wrestler reference, 360 yen to the dollar dated you! Not that it would make a difference for me. Only my tiny tiny crumbs from youtube pays me in dollars. When it was 80 to 90yen to the dollar under Abe, that was when we lived large.
@JovesJapanJams5 күн бұрын
@@Exjapter I don't know about your last sentence? Because when I was 12 years old and had $20 in my pocket after mowing 10 lawns in Yokohama and then went to the bank to exchange it for 7,200 yen to go shopping off-base, I thought I was living large.

@@Exjapter I'm not clear on what the higher level career path is in University teaching here in Japan, but you may find more opportunities open up outside of teaching, if you're interested in such things. I'm looking for new work now (non-teaching) and the biggest obstacle is my average Japanese - everyone is looking for skilled, experienced bilinguals (not a common commodity), so if you have the Japanese and decent experience in a professional/cultural capacity, you're most of the way there.

Sounds like you've made a good life there for you and your family. Good luck with the thingo your submitting in March. I think the house videos are more interesting from a renovation pov, but thats just me coz thats what I plan to do soonish. Tips could benefit some people building in Japan, you'd have to be a minority though. So you never know the video could end up being really popular. You could voice over some AI created video maybe which could help maintain your privacy. One of the best old J house reno videos was done by a friend in Saitama called Todatron around 2009/2010. He unfortunately didn't like changes in the YT/Jvlog scene and stopped making videos a long time ago. I really enjoyed his videos.

We did many things similarly, although I met my wife in the states. What kept me in Japan were my kids, and now grandkids. Comparatively no violence in schools, no drug abuse, and almost zero crazy people. I didn't want my kids growing up in that toxic environment. That, plus a 30 year mortgage (now paid off). One thing I would slightly disagree with is the difference between teaching children and adults. Yes, the kids need to be told not to dance on the desks, but college students have far more mental problems. One of my current students has a doctor's note telling me that she finds it hard to do anything except sit in a chair and play with her phone.

This podcast helps me decide not to get a Japanese driver’s license..I’ll take public transportation..my question to you is…did taking this extreme test and are now driving in japan…are you a better driver now than if you were driving in the US? You also have to cover why most Japanese people don’t own cars. I hear car insurance and registration fees are extensive….thank you but I really can’t afford a car . I’m glad you cover important topics that foreigners might find interesting. Like….covering school life in japan….both as a teacher and as a parent for their child….
@Exjapter6 күн бұрын
I am a better driver in a few respects, one of them being I am much more careful about looking for bicycles and scooters since they are so much more common here than where I grew up. Car ownership really comes down to where you live. Many of my coworkers don't own cars because they live in central Yokohama or Tokyo. Where I am, it would be hard to do much (like grocery shopping) without a car. Out in Yamanashi where I was a JET I tried to live without a car when I first moved in. I lasted 2 months and never regretted getting one as it boosted my freedom to explore exponentially. But if I had to move to central Tokyo, I'm pretty sure I'd get rid of it.

Thanks for another great video. I do think it would be worth doing another driving video about the experience building your house, I think alot of your audience want to move to Japan and are looking into property, employment and the various nuances which is why your channel has so much appeal. My family and I went for the first time in October and couldn`t get enough, looking to go again soon and looking at longer term options. We also like the idea of living on the outskirts of the Yokohama area, close to city but not really like you said and the ability to have a car and drive around also. I`m actually surprised the channel doesn`t have alot more subs but I`m sure it will grow much bigger in the future.

Thanks for the comment and sentiment. As long as people don't mind what may be my longest video ever, I will do a building a house video at some point.
@TheShrededward6 күн бұрын
I agree that building a custom house in Japan deserve at least one video, just for the various obstacles unique to Japan. For example, stay entirely with Japanese suppliers. I went with American doors and windows, which means that if a window breaks, nobody will fix it for you. I had that happen to a window, and the only thing I could do was pay somebody to replace the entire sash. Oh, and don't get me started on the Japanese penchant for wallpaper!
