remember to neutralize your darkroom chemicals before pouring down the common drain
@fvlwrs4 күн бұрын
I don’t use the drain. I store old chem in bottles and send to the waste center. You can see them on the counter to the right in the background at 6:30. I’m on septic and not trying to give my family a reason to get it replaced.

maybe the blix time is fine with 6:00 at 102F. I normally develop blix much cooler than 102 so that could possibly account for needing more time but I know in the instructions it still says like 75-102 as the proper range. not entirely sure about that though

The extra stick is for agitation if you're processing without the AGO. It's an alternative to inversion agitation. The weird plug looking piece is an adapter for older Patterson tanks I'd definitely recommend making custom programs for black and white. It's a game changer for longer development times

how do you dispose of your chemicals? I wanna develop at home too but I dunno where to dispose of mine.
@fvlwrs6 күн бұрын
You need to ask your local waste system. There’s usually info on their website or you can give them a call and ask the requirements to dispose of photographic chemicals. Alternatively you could ask a local film lab or community developing club, but they’ll probably recommend the same thing.

I have one of these and the trick to pouring out is to ignore the processor and pour out the opposite side just as you would if hand developing. Do not try to pour out using that ramp for pouring in. And you already did what I did, buy a USB-C plug. I understand from another video AGO is going to supply those on newer runs of their units. Keep these coming on your AGO journey. I’m still new to it myself and have used it only 4 times. Did DF96 with it too. So far great results. Thanks for sharing.

good effort, I shoot Kodak Gold 200 in 120 format (hasselblad 500C\m and a Sinar F2 with a 120 back), it scans good, I borrow a Epson V850 from my local library, great scanner, a 'flat bed' with a light in the lid, and a flat holder based negative carrier, similar to an enlarger, but plastic, Haven't had any problems, other than a light leak in one hasselblad magasine, but great non the less.
@andyvan569222 күн бұрын
yes, that "bleach bypass" sounds funny, but its a definite chemistry, like the ECN-2 for motion picture film (70mm and 65mm) you see it sold as rolls in camera stores (or as 135 in the guise of 500D or 800T films); what happens is that like C41 there are dyes which activate from rust salts of the developer, THIS dye/rust salts can be a severe cross contamination of the emulsion, or any residue can wreck the shelf life of the bleach chemistry, from what I can gather, so this step is 'hopped over'; Older film and chemistry. D76 and some others NEED a separate Bleach and fixer step, the bleach does something to stabilise the negative at that stage, prior to fixer doing its thing; modern developer concoctions don't, they have a "Blix" {bleach + Fix} chemistry step.

Not sure how expensive your lab is, but for me shooting kodak colour plus (or gold, or fuji etc.) + development is cheaper than a roll of portra 400. Haven't shot it in 2 years for that reason...
@fvlwrs4 ай бұрын
I feel it, I haven’t bought portra in a while due to the price. My whole family is super supportive and usually stocks me up on film for holidays and my birthday which is sweet of them, I’m really lucky in that matter. I’m going to send portra to the lab tho if I get some more gifted since I’m not having the best luck with home dev/scans 🫠 Color plus is actually my favorite color film stock anyways! I find that’s the stock I get the best home scans from So I usually always have it on hand. I haven’t tried gold yet but I will this summer!

I've been almost exclusively shooting Bulk rolled Kodak Vision 3 250D/500T for colour (which works out less than 8 euros/9 dollars a roll) since April 2023, but I am very fortunate to have a lab that does ECN-2 development. I started out with home development while they were setting up their ECN-2 machine, but getting the remjet completely off is a huge pain and I do not recommend it to save a few bucks.

I always got TERRIBLE results from portra 400 when I developed at home. Now that I do lab development for color film and continue to scan myself, I feel super late to the game but I love portra 400 now. I think developing B&W at home, color at the lab, and scanning everything yourself is the best balance between cost and results
@fvlwrs5 ай бұрын
Glad I’m not the only one that has trouble with portra 400 at home 🥲 might have to try your balancing method thanks for the tip!
@javixo19975 ай бұрын
@@fvlwrs I can confirm this too. I used to send my film to a local guy who develops at home, always terrible results with portra. As soon as I tried a lab I got perfect results every time. My guess is that T grain is very very sensitive to any variation during development, unlike b&w or cubic grain color films (gold and color plus) which can handle a little variation. I wouldn't hand develope T grain color film unless I had a Jobo processor
@fvlwrs5 ай бұрын
@@javixo1997 So what you’re saying is, I need a Jobo 👀👀👀 This makes a whole lot of sense tho, maybe I won’t give up on portra 400 just yet 🤞
@krzysztofw91364 ай бұрын
So nice that someone else is ruining films but not gibing up ;) But yea same here. I just F*up my girls Portra roll. I absolutely hate developing portra at home, except 800, for some reason I had really good results with that film. Fuji 200 (Gold 200) are the best films to develop at home, always give me great results. I build my own jobo machine, so now I have constant agitation and water bath with temp control, but still if you miss by just one or 2 F degrees you will get bad colors with portra. Can't wait the moment when you discover kodak cinema films, bulk loading and ecn-2 process. That's where the fun begins ;)
