I have a rare Vanduzen & Tift 17 inch bell but the top is cracked and I am having it brazed. It is bronze.

Hi I have a 17 inch vanduzen bell. I am having the top of the bell brazed by a good welder and brazer. I gave 250 for it 5 years ago. Its a Vanduzen and Tift 1870 model bronze.

What I always find a bit sad about American bells is, that they are almost exclusively hung on arched yokes and rung with falling clappers. If they were hung on straight yokes with flying clappers, the sound could be improved immensely and the bell would swing in a natural rhythm more pleasant to listen to.

I really hope that we can establish contact. You seem to really care- as I do. Attempting to aquire history of our States Courthouse bells.

I just discovered this site. I'm from Iowa, and have attempted to catalog the Iowa Courthouse bells. Some very surprising results. If I could contact you, I would share pictures and rather unexpected results. I have pictures and measurements of a Vanduzen, and one locally that is displayed that doesn't come up to mid-calf height. Meneely and McShane are very different stories. I am compiling information as it comes in.

I love bells and I always love your videos. This one in particular has a majestic sound. I do not have the means to buy one , but I do love to hear it. I have 2 cast steel bells by Goulds Mfg. One is a no 33 but its more like 32 inches and the other has a no 28 stamped on it but its more like 30 inches. They both have a beautiful sound. The town they were made in was Sennica Falls, NY. This town was the backdrop for the movie "Its a wonderful life' starring Jimmy Stuart. In the movie it was called Bedford Falls..Just thought I would share that little tidbit...
I have a 17 inch Vanduzen & Tift that I have in a pro welding shop to look at it. The top has 3 hairline cracks but he said he could fix it. It has the name of it on the skirt of the bell 1871
@ChimeMaster3 жыл бұрын
Ron, A pro welding shop repair is not likely to be successful. Are you sure it is cracked and you are not seeing molding imperfections? A cracked bell will not ring with a quality note. There are shops in Europe that we send bells to for repair. It is a long process of bringing the entire bell up near the melting point of the bronze, then opening the insulated blanket at the crack and using a welding rod made with bronze alloy compatible with analyzed samples removed from the damaged area. Unless your heart is set on making it ring true again and are willing to invest on a proper repair, you should save your money and make it a visual display. - Jeff

@@ChimeMaster You are right. I called the weld shop and he said he had never had a bell in his shop I am going to pick it up. I have a friend who is a great brazer and may give a try. The cracks are not in the soundbow but on top of the bell. I was thinking of grinding the cracks out and pouring a low melting point metal in the crevice and displaying it. Butch my welder friend successfully welded up a cast steel alloy bell by tig method and now you cannot tell it ever cracked and it rings true. Its a 20 inch bell he welded. I ground all way through the crack and he filled in the gap with tig method and it has good sustain.
