Why are they called butcher bird?

There's a software company, in Australia, called Cantabile. Its software processes Virtual Studio Technology instructions. They have a presence here on KZbin. Record a chirp and load it to Cantabile, then play it back at different frequencies (notes). See if the Butcher Bird will try to correct you!

I'd never heard of a Butcher Bird before til an Aussie friend in a chat room mentioned them, I came here to see what the fuss was all about and this guy is just brilliant. He sounds like the happiest bird on the planet and he can't wait to tell you about it lol.

Having returned to New Zealand the thing I miss the most is Australian birds and particularly the amazing butcher bird and coorong songs! And freshly made pizza!

I use a Pied Butcher Bird's call for the ringtone on my mobile. You should see the reaction of other people when, for example, my phone rings in a coffee shop! They are of the same genus as our (Australian) magpie, which also has a lovely warble.

Wonderful, love that bird.

Their lovely calls hides a very nasty nature of these birds..they killed all 4 of the Plover chicks when less than a week old...not nice.
