With regards to prices going up in touristy areas, this is something that the Spanish government can easily control, but does not because it wants the foreign cash. Stop blaming tourists, foreigners, and tourism. Speak to your government.

I´m in Barcelona right now and this morning I went to Cafe Europa at 469 Avenida Diagonal as it´s close to my hotel, and I was treated very well by all the staff. Also a Spanish mother and her daughter left their table as they were nearly done so that I could have their table, which was nice of them. Then I walked along Diagonal a little bit and was passing a store called Workcenter at 437 Avenida Diagonal which does DHL and sells stationery and office type stuff. I decided to go in because I was thinking about sending a package to family in the US. When I walked in, there were several people at the counter, so I decided I did not want to wait and would just have a look around the store to see what they sell and come back some other time. I had a quick look around and did not find anything particularly interesting, so walked out of the store. I had not touched anything or even gone near the merchandise because I felt uncomfortable and as if I was being watched. As I walked out of the store, I had just walked a few steps when I saw a girl with blonde hair and a very bright pink sweater walking towards me. She looked like she might be Russian. She looked me and then gave me a look as if to warn me about something behind me. Therefore, I turned to look behind me and saw a big security guard with a mean look on his face coming out of the Workcenter store towards me! I looked at him and he said something to me in Spanish, which I didn´t understand. I said, ´What?´Then he kept walking towards me and came to see what I had in my hand. All I had in my hand was my phone, just like millions of other people do. Then when he saw that I only had my phone in my hand, he was like oh okay and walked off. I said, ´You thought I took something? Oh my God!´He didn´t respond and quickly went back into the store. I did not know what to do and decided to carry on with my plan to walk to the Sagrada Familia, but the whole thing has left me with a really bad feeling. I am from London and am of Indian background and I believe that the people in this store assumed that I was Roma/gypsy and even though I did nothing wrong and was probably in the small store for only a couple of minutes, during which I did not even go near the merchandise, they still suspected that I was a thief and that I had taken something. It is truly a horrible feeling and a horrible way to treat anyone. I only arrived in Barcelona yesterday by train from Valencia after visiting many other cities in the past month and this is the first time this has happened on this trip and the fact that it happened my first morning in Barcelona is quite telling. Recently, I spent two weeks in Alicante and was treated well by all. Same in Valencia. But arriving in Barcelona, this happens on my first real day here. With regards to how I look, well I am Indian, but sometimes Brazilians think I am Brazilian, Iranians think I am Iranian, and I even had an Algerian guy working at a nice cafe in Alicante ask me whether I spoke French and whether I was from Algeria or Morocco! In any case, it simply should not matter what I look like! Yes, Barcelona may have a problem with pickpockets and thieves, but it is wrong to place suspicion onto people who have done nothing wrong as if I don´t have the right to go into any store I want to to look around just like anyone else, just because the staff think I might be Roma or gypsy or Moroccan or whatever they might be thinking. London is a much bigger city than Barcelona and it cetainly has its problems, but we do not have this kind of racial profiling and watching and following people out of stores in London UNLESS they have actually done something to cause suspicion of theft or some other wrongdoing or crime). Feeling really horrible. What is also interesting is that I avoided coming to Barcelona for many years because I had heard so much about pickpockets everywhere and so I was holding onto my bag carefully just like everyone else here and then I get treated like a thief simply because I am of Indian origin.

Why do white people always think they are experts on racism? Ask people of color and don't assume. Spanish people have been racist for ages. When you make up excuses, it makes you seem racist as well.

Hola:) planning on moving to BCN soon. I‘m interested in Poblenou, but for maybe further down in the future I wondered to even be in a beachy area further outside to have more quiet and save on rent. Do you have any infos and/or experience with Badalona? Is it safe, nice, still cafes etc around? Too far out or not? Muchas gracias;) Bianca

Its funny Europeans go to African/Carribean countries and get treated like kings and queens, but when we go to European countries we get treated like sh** based on my sources. I wanted to go to Barcelona as my first European trip but I might have to reconsider. I have no desire to beg for acceptance or respect.

My experience observing interactions between Spaniards all over spain (including Barcelona) is that becase Spaniards are not fully white they tend to be more hateful of darker skinned people to make themselves feel Aryan, they tend to not want to serve darker skinned people, acknowledge them when they ask questions and be seen to interact frequently with them...regardless of their status and pedigree. It is similar to what Asians do.
@dangercat9188 Жыл бұрын
Lmfao don't tell them that 😂. I'm Hispanic American and I also think that many don't look too white. Some look arab and it's because of the history that the country has. Of course you're gonna see some blue eyes and blonde hair every once in a while since it IS Europe but it's not the dominant trait there.
@LaChicaconSuerte-1111Ай бұрын
I get that a lot, but not from Spanish people in Spain. I get that awful treatment from some Latin Americans working in cafes and restaurants in Spain, who don´t want to serve me because they think I am one of them (I´m not, I´m from London and of Indian background). Imagine having that much of an inferiority complex that you refuse to serve your own! They literally walk off and ignore me and won´t serve me, but then they start being nice when they hear me speaking in English, realizing I am not from Latin America and assuming I might spend more or leave them bigger tips because I am from the UK. It´s sickening. This happened to me in Alicante city center and also in Valencia.

I wonder if you could suggest a few places that you really like that are close to Barcelona by train that are international and more accepting of people from different countries. I have found that a lot of Spanish people still have a lot of prejudice against people with darker skin colors, but I find very funny because I am not white and yet many Spanish people are much darker than myself!

Spain needs to improve education urgently. That’s the most impactful thing that any country can do to combat racism. Education standards are still very low in Spain compared to many other countries of the EU.

Uber was actually really bad for taxi drivers in the US. A lot of taxi drivers were put into massive debt because you had to buy a license to start driving a taxi and now others can drive for Uber without this expensive license and that led to the "value" of the license crashing. Now tons of people are paying the debt on these licenses that aren't worth any money.

To tell you the truth, racism in Barcelona makes me laugh. I find it funny that a country that has 1/20th GDP of the USA would have something stupid to say about skin color. I think racist might need to focus a bit more on actually being superior rather than pretending they are. I can't even think of the last product I've bought from Spain, but I'm reasonably sure my phone has African mined parts in it.
