But can you install one of the cassettes in a ceiling that you will completely close up and have no attic access? What if you need to service it? Or replace it? Do you need access to get into the attic?
@jcchan08
@jcchan08 3 ай бұрын
One-way cassettes can be installed in a closed off ceiling if they joists are spaced 16" on center. The refrigerant lines come out one end of the unit so orientation and locating the outdoor unit will be very important to your build. These one-ways were made to address the access issue with the 4 way ceiling cassettes, no attic access required. It would be wise to create an access hatch to get to the threaded refer line connections to disconnect if you ever want to replace it.

Should be ok. All access can be done from below after you remove the bevel.

Love the video. I’m thinking about installing this unit in our theater room, because wife doesn’t like the looks of wall mounted unit. However my concern is drain line, I have two top of the line variable compressor Trane units that are less than 2 years old, water drain line constantly backs up with mildew build up and A/C quits working. Doesn’t look like would be very easy to service this tray and line in case of blockage? Any thought on that?

What’s the voltage needed for the cassette to work
@emailjamesnewton

You need to run 220V to the outside units and then the individual heads are powered from the outdoor unit.

Hey James, I'm planning to install a Mr Cool ceiling unit in my garage next spring and am trying to plan ahead for the installation. I haven't seen too many videos on the ceiling cassete and this is really helpful. Two questions: - What are the dimensions of the rough opening? - I noticed that the unit is boxed in (might be the subfloor for the next floor?), what size are those joists? My garage is framed with 2x4's at 24 OC so I need to do some framing anyway...
@emailjamesnewton
@emailjamesnewton 8 ай бұрын
The rough opening is designed for 16" on center ceiling joists. Mine were 24" so I needed to box it in. The length is probably a little over 4 feet. Mr. Cool provides a template to cut the sheetrock to the exact size necessary. My ceiling joists are the bottom chord of a roof truss, only a 2x6. I built the 2x6 up with 2x4's to make them taller in the area and capped this box with a piece of plywood, air-sealed the entire box, and will insulate the roof space on top of this. The unit would fit in a joist bay of 2x10 (or greater) and 16" on center. Best of luck.

I like the idea of this unit as a retrofit; but given that you have new construction, why not "do it right," with a branch box system that feeds multiple rooms? No, it's not as easy to do, but if you're building new, ...

I like the installation with the lag bolts - easier and cleaner solution for newbs like me. Are you at all concerned with vibration noise? (as opposed to using metal rods to hang the unit - not sure if that makes a difference) - great video by the way.
@emailjamesnewton
@emailjamesnewton Жыл бұрын
These units do have the option of being hung from above with rods, I could see that method working well with a drop ceiling.

I can guarantee that machine will be a big failure. Those pumps fail constantly, and that ceiling will be a moldy mess. It looks hard to replace the pump as well. Now that mini splits have been out a while they are starting to fail and main failure is drain lines. In my area a big city they will not put in new construction with drain lines inside walls. In some case a $20k repair to remove and fix walls, floor, mold.

routing the condensate line was a concern of mine. This ultimately runs to a slop sink in a mechanical room so that I can verify and monitor that the unit is draining properly.
@lilbluecar89
@lilbluecar89 3 ай бұрын
I was just thinking the same thing, especially since he has the drain pipe going up. I’m sure the pump will move the water but why make it easier for water to flow back towards the unit when the pump is off? I’d be guessing it will likely cause mold build up or early pump failure

They have been making them for their professional line for some time now. The unit I have here it the first of their ceiling cassettes marketed for their DIY line. I think that just means precharged fix length lines that attach with couplers instead of flare fittings.

Excited to see the finished product - won't raising the condensate line make it difficult for the condensation to escape?
@emailjamesnewton
@emailjamesnewton Жыл бұрын
That was my initial thought to. The condensate leaves the unit about 3" above the sheetrock so draining by gravity alone might be difficult. In situations where gravity alone will not suffice the internal condensate pump can send the water up 20.8" first (according to the manual) to get it out of the rafter bay or high enough to drain by gravity over a greater distance.
