4:13 I really wanted to say something about how this scene could still be a red herring and that Toby doesn't have to adhere to the fandom’s ideas of what the scene was especially since we’ve only 2 chapters worth of evidence… but I’m so tired after reading the comments and watching the video (seriously your voice is ridiculous soothing) that I just won’t… *for now*

I love your writing style, this is your most interesting video of the four imo. I like how you tied in primal and intrinsically human fears to the characterization of the troupe, I had never considered this angle before. It is sad to think that the grimmchild will never have a happy ending, but like in many stories, perhaps the ending doesn't matter as much as the journey. Taking a child out of a toxic environment is well enough on its own, and the experience itself gives hope to life.

Thank you for the nice words! When I read that the Grimm troupe update included the path of pain, I realised that the underlying theme could be uncovering/breaking toxic relationships, mainly between fathers and children. Idk if the developers intended it or not, but it's still interesting nonetheless.

Ok, this video is amazing, and I love that you had the courage and ability to compile and edit all this information, but there is one detail that you pointed out that I disagree with. Around 12:16, you said that: "There is one key aspect I think is intentional; "let us erase this pointless world and move on to the next" Well, the next world could mean another Undertale timeline..." I don't think that is true. After two genocide runs, Chara says: "This SOUL resonates with a strange feeling. There is a reason you continue to recreate this world. There is a reason you continue to destroy it. You. You are wracked with a perverted sentimentality. Hmm. I cannot understand these feelings anymore." It's a small detail, but I feel like it is wildly important to this conversation. I do not know if you address this later in the video, because as soon as I heard that I paused the game, looked up dialogue, and wrote this comment. Bottom line is, I am really happy that I found this video, and thank you for making it.

You sort of lost me at the end with this: "This way, even the characters from Hometown get to exert control over the Darkners, just like you the player, can[...]" Not because I disagree but because I may be a little slow. Can you go into more detail on what you meant here, and how it relates to the preceding statement of "The SOUL is just a tool for you to gain access, power, and ultimately control over this other world". Otherwise I very much enjoyed this video and it gave me some food for thought; if Undertale is a bedtime story, then is Before The Story soundtracking the act of getting into bed? And one more thing, re: the dark fountain in SURVEY_PROGRAM. Isn't that OUR dark fountain, the one that's transporting our SOUL into the world of Deltarune? Think about how Bergley was going to make a dark fountain in Cyber World. Good stuff, do more when the need strikes you.

I wonder, since SOUL is usually capitalized like LOVE and EXP, if it’s an acronym just like LOVE and EXP. One example I can think of is Spirit Of Under-Lying (power). That’s the best one I can think of that also makes sense lol. Edit: Another theory I just thought of is the trait of the red soul could actually be “Control.” It lines up with Patience, Bravery, Kindness, Integrity, and Justice. Since Justice seems to parallel how the soul works in battle (Being able to shoot like a Sheriff) Control would make sense since you can move freely in all 4 directions. Not only that, but you also have control over the different weapons and items you choose, meanwhile each soul is associated with only their specific armor and weapons. Control also makes sense cause… It’s under your control… This ended up being way longer than it needed to be.

5:03 actually considering Chris is going to put everyone in danger on no grave, by opening a fountain it lines up with the real chara’s willingness to do anything for a certain goal. Also, they were not sadistic in the real life. If she was, you have to call half the monsters in Undertale sadistic. Also frisk actually doesn’t care for monsters since all the hatred on genocide is coming from them “ do you really hate me that much” In fact, they laugh at the fact that they killed her. A bunch of dogs if you check the dog food after killing the dogs

While this is an interesting interpretation and theory... and has some good points, I don't agree with the red soul being called the determination soul. It's stated in the true lab that all human souls have determination in them. You've probably already addressed this in the comments before though.
@tanyas.
@tanyas. 9 ай бұрын
My interpretation was based on the assumption that a soul's defining trait determines its color/properties. Just because someone's soul is defined first by patience, it doesn't mean that it cannot be kind or brave. The same thing could apply to the red soul.

Honestly, the discussion continuing on for so long as a whole annoys me a bit. It’s not explicitly said ‘oh hey they’re NB’ because it isn’t the most important thing about the characters, it’s just one aspect, and people can fit into those categories without it being a defining trait of them.

I didn't even know what being trans was until after I realized I was trans. As a smaller kiddo back in 2016, I had assumed Frisk's gender to be female because hair I guess. But, by random chance, I had happened to find some let's-player whose name I don't remember trying out some online Undertale mod thing-- I don't think it played out like Undertale, but I do remember that at least the first two rooms had the same layout. Anyhoo, this person was laughing at the amount of people who chose to play as Frisk, even when there were so many other options. I remember them saying something like "so many genderless children" in a joke-y kind of way. At first, I was pretty confused. My mom had told me what the word "gender" meant prior (but at the time, we both only really knew the binary), so I was just like "GENDERLESS IS AN OPTION?!!!" (Not really but you know. Shocked). My world had been opened up because of a throwaway joke. I remember running into the living room sometime after and proudly proclaiming that I was a genderless child. After that, mom learned what "non-binary" meant, but when she explained it to me, my stubborn ass refused to use it and kept saying I was a genderless child for a while after. Nowadays, I know that my gender is heavily masc-leaning, but if it weren't for Undertale, I might not have learned that I wasn't cis-- at least not for a few years. Thanks, Undertale.

honestly with Kris' gender even if we don't know what it is, i think it's clever to refer Kris as Them/They, since it can be used to both singular and plural, on the plural side, since Kris and the Player is connected, is a really good plot device to makes us connect with the world and feel part of it, and on the singular side we don't know Kris' gender and neither Kris knows ours.

My video would not be made if gender would be solely defined by an objective truth- gender is a social construct, because it is associated with certain physical, mental and emotional traits, roles in society, personal liberties, and many more things that are solely determined by the perception of society at large, not innate traits. But just because we can declassify gender as an objective thing does not mean that we can erase the concept at large. Since the world of UT/DR has gendered pronouns and uses terms like "man", "girl" etc, with the same meanings as in our world, the idea of gender is still present, regardless of the strictness of gender roles. So an individual acquires a gender identity, whether by choice or by being labeled by others. My video discusses the idea that the humans in game are their own people, different from the player, therefore having the freedom to have their own gender identity, not imposed by external forces. The evidence provided hints at the idea that they would probably not fall under either of the gender binaries, but rather the non-binary umbrella (agender, genderqueer, gender fluid etc.)

In Frisk's case you could _maybe_ argue that the monsters simply don't know Frisk's pronouns and default to they/them, which is relatively unlikely to be hurtful. still, i think it's pretty unambiguous that all three of the humans canonically prefer they/them (and possibly it/its in Chara's case). It's understandable why people come to the conclusion that frisk and chara's gender is ambiguous rather than specifically nonbinary, but with Kris, it's misreading one of the game's central themes. Kris' personality outside of the player's influence is shown _much_ more frequently and conspicuously than either of the other two.
@Hylian_Waffle
@Hylian_Waffle 10 ай бұрын
I think the main point is that Toby Fox intended the characters to be separate from the player while still being relatable to everyone. He doesn't want the player to have any control over the character's gender, as that would make them feel less like actual characters separate from the player, because that's the twist with all three of them.

This is a really good video, and I'm very glad it popped up in my recommended! I'm definitely sticking around for other stuff you might do in the future :3 Also I've always found it so funny when people argue that Kris uses they/them as a stand-in for the player. Like, with Frisk/Chara i could see why people thought that. You name Chara and Frisk's personality outside of your control is very small. I still thought those people were wrong, but i could see how they got to that point. But with Kris that argument falls apart so hard it is almost laughable. Kris is so distinct from the player that it can't be ignored

It is not proven, but heavily implied. I talked about both the pros and cons of this theory. While I do personally believe that Narrachara makes a lot of sense, I cannot sit here and tell others that it is confirmed, as that would be misinformation. I understand where you're coming from, and as I said, I agree, but it is important as a theorist to make that distinction.

There are multiple instances in which ralsei is dismissive/upset about kris's feelings (Post-spamton battle, Susie imagination exercises, acid photoshoot) in favor of the player's enjoyment. Subtle hints that Kris is distant towards ralsei are sprinkled throughout the game, especially in ch2- there is a bit of tension between them. Notice that I used "apparent" and "may have" in the sentence, because it is still up to interpretation the extent to which kris is weary of ralsei.
