Embarrassing how poorly I made my point on the Elven rings. I understand Tolkien envisaged them as a force for good because they were made with pure intentions. I just find it interesting what power they were made to wield and by whom. Not corrupting in and of themselves (scary whispers and mind control) but the power to shape and control the cycles of nature being something essentially in Sauron's wheelhouse. While the smiths of Eregion who made them not being the wisest examples of Elves-it seems to add a depth to them, that this particular style of power could so easily be abused through hubris by any Peoples while running counter to well-worn themes of faith, fatalism and acceptance of imperfection. I just shouldn't be allowed in front of a keyboard when time is a factor :/ Your argument about the realms of Rivendell and Lorien being essential to the quest of the Fellowship and also vital for expressing what the Free Peoples were fighting for, was extremely cogent and the first time I ever thought of them that way in the context of the Three rings. Thanks for your patient discussion!

Really enjoyed your preview breakdown! Tolkien is always best studied without haste. It takes a minute to reference the books and never mind the silence as you flip through the pages or clicking as you pull up sources. By the time I’m done listing to one of your long live shows, I typically have at 4-5 books & my atlas open at once doing cross reference.

If Middle Earth is our world, and it is, the near east would be Steppes the far East is the Gobi desert. Tolkien plays off the name Gobi in early drafts of the hobbit when referring to the far East.

@@ThePhilosophersGames Honestly, I am approaching it that way. I don't care if the Elf or Hobbit or Dwarf is black, brown or Asian. That said, Amazon Prime Video has a strict DEI policy with quotas for hiring and screen time. Having Rhûn be a desert makes the black Hobbits out there look natural, more than the whites. It also makes Sadoc and the other black Hobbits seem more viable. Bezos should have just made all the Harfoots black. For me, they should all be the same race. The United Nations of Harfoots is an obvious DEI virtue signal. They should hold hands in a big circle and sing "We Are the World."🙄

When Sephiroth fell into the lifestream, normally the lifestream would absorb him. And partially did. As the lifestream started absorbing his body, Sephiroth absorbed the head of Jenova into himself. Using his will to stop the process and keep the rest of his body together. He stopped the lifestream from absorbing him, much like some of the ancient people. He never died, never submitted to the natural process of the lifestream. He then used Reunion of the Jenova cells. Communed with them to do his bidding across the world.

I fully believe the Jenova theory. What I believe happened, is that a ton of people misinterpreted the game and thought that Sephiroth was the main villain, and so Sephiroth became a super popular character. Due to this popularity, FF7 was retconned to have him as the main villain, and that's what they've gone with in sequels, side media like Kingdom Hearts, and the Ultimania Omega. Jenova makes too much sense for it to be ignored, and in a way, she really was the puppet master all along, making even the audience believe that she could be ignored in favour of her favourite puppet and his reputations and power, Sephiroth.

sorry to hear. Yes usually when I play video games, there is at least some cheese to the w(h)ine. PS: Jokes aside, I know that after Season 1, I will have a hard time to stay neutral or optimistic for Season 2. I'm primarily a book fan and some changes trigger me quite hard. E.g. Episode 8 is if you purely look at its making potentially the best or one of the best episodes of season 1, but it's story/lore wise the episode that disappointed me the most. I see so much potential, if they would have sticked more to what Tolkien wrote with only some minor changes to the main plot points. I hope they can improve in season 2 (pacing, the story leading somewhere, more scale,e tc), but it also feels like that the writers wanted to make things more difficult for them in some places and there they risk creating plot holes and having story arcs and character decisions not fitting perfectly together. Still I#m curious what they will do. I try to be more neutral, but it's hard.

I think the whole forging of the Elven Rings fiasco can be remedied quite easily. Flashbacks ninety years earlier and have Annatar, Celebrimbor and the Gwaith-i-Mirdain forging the first sixteen Rings of Power.👍😁 Of course, Payne and McKay are not even trying to follow the sequence of events, much less the timeline itself.

Chris, also according to the lore, Celebrimbor was in love with Galadriel. He knew she and Celeborn were soulmates, but at every opportunity he did what he could to make her life better. He remade the Elessar, which I am sure had powers to slow down fading and decay in Lothlorien, but not to the extent of Nenya. That is why I think Celebrimbor made Nenya special among the Rings he forged himself. Then he specifically gave the ring to Galadriel. What say you?
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames 18 күн бұрын
there is one version where Celebrimbor has a crush on Galadriel. But there is no canon in this area. Celebrimbor was not sure what to do with rings after he found out Sauron was behind it. And then held council with Galadriel and they agreed the rings should be hidden. You could interpret things as maybe he made Nenya with Galadriel in mind, but as said, that is just an interpretation. All the different versions Tolkien wrote, make this time very complicated and it's impossible to make definitive statements.
@Enerdhil
@Enerdhil 18 күн бұрын
@@ThePhilosophersGames Well you obviously believe the version of the story where Celebrimbor has the Three Rings when Sauron puts on his One Ring. I think that he had already handed out two of them to Galadriel and Gil-galad and kept the third one for himself. And I believe that all three took off their Rings immediately after Sauron put on his for the first time. Can you prove to me that Celebrimbor did not make the Rings to immediately help Eregion, Lindon, and Lothlorien. I refuse to believe he forged those Rings and held onto them for ten years, and maybe would have held onto them forever had Sauron not put on his One Ring. Waiting for more than ten years to give those Elven Rings of Power is stupid. Celebrimbor made a deal with Annatar so he wasn't going to use any of the first 16 Rings of Power. He must have been impatient waiting for Annatar to return and so made Vilya, Nenya, and Narya. This is my headcanon anyway.
@Enerdhil
@Enerdhil 18 күн бұрын
@@ThePhilosophersGames By the way, the version of the story that shows Celebrimbor being in love with Galadriel has an extensive dialogue in Unfinished Tales, three pages before the Notes section of The History of Galadriel and Celeborn. Anyway, that is why I believe it is true.

Yes, just read the texts 😅 the Eregion Elves made Galadriel and Celeborn leave Eregion. Lothlórien had a different King/Ruler at this time, which was not Galadriel, but Galadriel gets the Ring not the Ruler. Gil-galad and Elrond advised Eregion to not trust Annatar. They trusted him despite the warning (with the words: "Alas, for the weakness of the great!For a mighty king is Gil-galad, and wise in all lore is Master Elrond, and yet they will not aid me in my labours. Can it be that they do not desire to see other lands become as blissful as their own?"), so the relationship between Lindon and Eregion was potentially not the best after that. So why would Eregion give away one of the best Rings to Lindon? And not some "lesser" ring if any ring at all? Also shouldn't the person, who claims that the video maker is wrong, provide sources to strengthen their claims? 😅 But I can provide evidence for my words. One Version from Unfinsihed Tales: "Sauron himself departed from Eregion about the year 1500, after the Mirdain had begun the making of the Rings of Power. Now Celebrimbor was not corrupted in heart or faith, but had accepted Sauron as what he posed to be; and when at length he discovered the existence of the One Ring he revolted against Sauron, and went to Lorinand to take counsel once more with Galadriel. They should have destroyed all the Rings of Power at this time, 'but they failed to find the strength'. Galadriel counselled him that the Three Rings of the Elves should be hidden, never used, and dispersed, far from Eregion where Sauron believed them to be. It was at that time that she received Nenya, the White Ring, from Celebrimbor [...]" Silmarillion: "Then in anger and fear they took off their rings. But he, finding that he was betrayed and that the Elves were not deceived, was filled with wrath; and he came against them with open war, demanding that all the rings should be delivered to him, since the Elven-smiths could not have attained to their making without his lore and counsel. But the Elves fled from him; and three of their rings they saved, and bore them away, and hid them." LotR: "[...] and forged secretly in the Mountain of Fire the One Ring to be their master. But Celebrimbor was aware of him, and hid the Three which he had made; and there was war, and the land was laid waste, and the gate of Moria was shut." They all have in common the following order: three unsullied Rings of Power were made in secret, then Sauron forged the One Ring and the elves of Eregion became aware of who Annatar really was and then they hid the Three Rings. That is the order.
