I’ve just realized this update has just encouraged the 2 commander chaining method. This method of chaining has you using the CTA ability of one commander, using another commander ability after 10 seconds, selling & rebuying the other commander, and repeat. Now, why is this better? Because if you were to now try regular chaining, you’d have a 50% firerate buff for only 75% of the time, which means DPS is only increased by 37.5% on average. However, the 2 commander chaining method would completely mitigate the cooldowns, and so there’d be a constant 50% buff. While it’s super expensive, keep in mind that this method is good at countering stuns, so it’s especially useful for the last wave, where money isn’t an issue. You’d also always have a back up commander with this chaining method, so there’s that.

Well actually, you don't need to sell and rebuy. You see, the cooldown is 30 seconds, and the CTA ability lasts until there's around 15 seconds remaining. Meaning you just have to time it right and boom, chaining with two commanders. No micro required.
