My father was a prisoner of war ww2 captured in Lybia in 1942 with other Italians by the Australian peace core.....unfortunately Italy's war was intangled with Mussolini's and Germany....big mistake....but thats history. So the Italians were put on The Queen Mary ship and brought to Fremantle. Australia from 1942 until 1945 he was a POW. Most of the Italians were moved from one state to another. Qld working on the sugar canes, NSW and Victoria working on all sorts of jobs. The Italian soldiers would make exchanges with the owners of the properties for eg.......my father would say I'll fix your shoes, he was a shoe maker another would say I will mend suits being a tailor and so on.........and they wanted in return...weat flour with tomatoes and a few 🌿 herbs. And when they were allowed in their barracks would cook pasta!!!!!!for everyone including the Army Guards. My father went back to Italy after the war ended 1945/,46. When he saw the state of his town, women, children starving and no help from the Italian's Government he tried to look for work from the south to the north of Italy but it 2as impossible very harsh times for all. So in 1949 he borrowed some money and came back to Australia 🇦🇺. And his reason for this as a young man was I was a POW but I 2as fed 3 times a day! How bad could it be now the war is over". The rest is history papa passed away at age of 99.....he never returned back to Italy.

Looks to me like a classic Aussie migrant story of two strong hardworking people who made a life for themselves on the other side of the world full of love, family and appreciation for both their culture and the country that gave them a new start. The Italian community in this country is well loved and people like these demonstrate exactly why. ❤
