Nice videography! Sorry to ask a technical question but what type of charcoal is that, it looks softer than typical compressed charcoal, it reminds of the kind I had in school which I could never find

I could talk art supplies all day. I start with vine charcoal usually the soft or medium stuff. Then I switch to Nitram charcoal and use the H, HB, and B. It’s the Nitram charcoal that give me so much more control that I can’t get with vine charcoal.

@@JenniferMariePainting Thanks. Btw do you just see the images/ compositions in your mind in a relatively complete form or do you usually have a concept and you 'feel it out' as it emerges stroke by stroke in front of you?

I’ve always worked out the image in my head before I start. Though with this new series I have a jumping off point but don’t know how it will end up. I’m trying to keep it a mystery from myself… I guess for the fun of working it out in the moment.

I remember this series from your older videos years ago, I have missed seeing you at work at those narrative paintings of the past. Beautiful composition all in all, the expression, hair, lines and strokes. I could already see the narrative element and I could only wonder what it means. I’d be eagerly waiting for this. Glad to see you back. :)

Do academic painters ever add black to their skin tones? I ask because I've noticed many academic artists tend to paint flesh tones that look rather gray when compared to painters such as Rubens, Boucher, and other old masters.
@JenniferMariePainting5 ай бұрын
My atelier used Ivory Black. I would never add it in the light areas of the skin tones though I definitely used it in the shadows. We had a rule that white never went in the shadows and black never went into the lights… though for some instances that rule got broken.

any thoughts on watercolor? Do arteliers teach the medium?

My atelier did not teach watercolor and I am not an expert in it. Though I feel as though the same would be true as to know your tools as much as possible.

I doubt the usefulness of the book because I don't see any training in simply redrawing shapes. It seems similar to a word recall game, where trying to memorize as many words as possible doesn't actually train the memory. it's kinda a test for your memory instead

If you don't have an art teacher it may take longer to get the full benefits of doing Bargues. Though do whatever you can do and with what you have available.

@@JenniferMariePainting I think art teachers are kinda a thing of the past it's all online now. If you do find a one on one teacher to tutor you it's really expensive like 100 dollars an hour or something. And if you pay for like a feedback session online or a course with feedback, it's usually like 700 USD.

I want to do a 6 ft. by 6ft. painting. I have a picture of my sister's cats. Will the Drawscope help me increase the photo size on this big canvas?
@JenniferMariePainting5 ай бұрын
You can change the photo size with placement of your easel, your photo and yourself. If you want to make the photo larger on your canvas make sure your photo is farther away than your canvas from yourself. It may take a bit of playing around with distances to get what you want.

I love this, as creatives we get on this cycle where people (including us) expect constant output but I think that kills the flow state and what’s special about our work.
@OmarAvilesCreative7 ай бұрын
Jennifer, you are so spot on when flow feels like I reach the center of the universe - when it comes to creating, making and building art for my everyday well being. I also realize flow is never constant- so acknowledge and appreciate all the time I have when I’m flowing with my art.
