I also made a Video about the E Units from Pentrex and it’s better to have a commuter train with multiple passenger cars and add more hours and make it run 7 days a week not 5 days a week. It should also run every 20 minutes instead of every 45 minutes because it will help our transit become more useful and reliable again.

E Unit Locomotives Reminds me of Vancouver Washington because BN and BNSF owns most of the class 1 mainline railroad tracks In Washington State and helped reopened the Line over Stevens pass in 1996.

@bigshouldersrails1318 Thanks for this video! Now that I know why the Chicago North Western ran left-handed, I'm curious why other there weren't many other railroads who ended up doing the same. Surely other railroads built their stations on the left-hand side of the track. Did they mostly opt to rebuild or move their station buildings/platforms/track?

used to travel from Kenosha WI to downtown Chicago every summer. It used to travel up to Racine but they stopped doing that(since I lived in Racine) but no problem. eventually became METRA with cab cars but not like the green and yellow that I loved!

The EMD E & F units. Someone should have told the railroad people that as long as the locomotives are maintained and modified for changing times, they can last forever.

"ac generator replaced a steam generator" uh, buddy, I think youre a bit off there. Steam generators are WHY they used these for so long. You are confusing the generator used for motive power with the steam generator these things used for in-car passenger heating. There were some F40 units that had steam generators for this very reason but Amtrak units were always at notch 8 when they were just sitting at a station in order to generate power for the whole train, including electric heat. Steam wasn't for power. Genius.

There are some urban conspiracy stories around the CNW introduction of the Pullman/St Louis gallery cars. When it was known politically that the Congress Expressway was going to be extended, they were going to have to tear down the elevated Garfield Park line. This was going to cutoff a heavily used (but financially weak) west suburban interurban (Chicago, Aurora & Elgin) from reaching their station on Wells. This was preferred by then suburbanites due to its speed and availability over the slow, smoke choked steam driven suburban service from the CNW. "Reportedly" Hizzoner (Mayor Daley) went to the president of the CNW to talk to him about it. CNW said they would invest in the gallery cars, but only if you get rid of the interurbans so it can be profitable by pushing the customers over to us since they ran parallel. It just so happened another (weak) interurban ran parallel to the CNW north line as well. As the work on the Congress Expressway started, the newly formed entity called the CTA (the city took over all the transit and bus lines in Chicago) became hostile to the interurban's and while accommodation was attempted, the Mayor had no patience to deal with a weak railroad. CNW started their gallery car service and gradually customers moved over after losing their one way ride. The CA&E finally shut down (after several court hearings and stays) and left people stranded in the Loop. But lets face it, the CNW could afford to be "innovative" because they had political support. (some might say interference). And the CNW was not very wealthy at the time.

On most (but not all) modern locomotives, there is a control option to run "left handed" on the display. This is in the event the engine should run on UP/CNW rails as the lead engine. Now that the option is more common, it is why you see more foreign power on UP rails out of Chicago.

Fun fact all of the CB&Q's E-8/9s also pulled all of their long distance passenger trains I.E. the Zeyphrs as they were rotated in and out of the commuter pool. I was told this was so they could run at high speed for longer distances so as to blow the soot out. The E-5s such as shown at IRM which is why it's under wires and the E-7s weren't as far as I know but I don't know the reason why.
