Part of the problem with food inflation is that a product gets a shortage (coffee for example) and shops hike the price because supply is low to reduce demand. However once supply recovers the price invariably does not go back to previous levels and the shops just move on - It's only when there is a price war that prices might drop again but usually only temporarily. Most inflation is caused by governments increasing the money supply by printing more money to 'pay' for something and that increased supply means the money in your pocket is worth less.
