really profound as a homeschooling parent. I never understood why wait if a child can retain it but I wondered how it could be taught in an exciting way. My homeschool curriculum taught all the sounds at one time and we couldn't move on until he got it. It took a solid 9 months and some sounds still slip so I began thinking again about just investing in the secret stories. But interestingly enough, him having all those sounds and the vowel teams and dipthongs he went from hardly blending to (turned 6.5), finally clicked and, boom graphic novels. I took a screenshot of that Frog and Toad book to show him tomorrow. I guarantee you he can read it and parents in my group for the homeschool curriculum said kid's can't read Frog and Toad until after a few levels of our curriculum. I am just going to not buy it and put my money into secret stories so it sticks forever and he can read faster

Love that you’re using piggybacked songs. I was a music therapist - moved into teaching 15 years ago though. But I use tons of music & piggybacking was a tool of the trade. 😃

I also love secret stories but the part about 2 vowels I used to always say the catchy rhyme but learned through LETRS training it’s only true 43%of the time. This explains more, not mine just sharing. To test the rule, I took the 1,000 most common words and analyzed them by applying the rule to each one. I discovered that, contrary to the rule’s claim, only 43% of the words actually followed the rule, and a stunning 57% of the words did not! When I analyzed the top 2,000 words, the percentage shifted even further-only 36% of the words followed the rule, and 64% did not. So much for this oft-repeated phrase! This is not to say that the rule is entirely invalid. There are many cases in which two vowels “go walking,” including ai, au, ea, ee, ei, ie, oa, eo, oi, oo, ou, and ui. And when a pair of vowels appears in a word, it is often the first vowel that “does that talking,” as represented in words like green, sea, hair, coat, clean, rain, and peach. However-and this is the important part-these same vowel teams also exist in many words that don’t follow the “when two vowels go walking” rule, including good, about, earth, bear, noise, author, and friend. Instead of relying on the incorrect guidance of this (fake) rule, teach your students the sounds of the letter combinations (called phonograms). Your student will learn important and fundamental concepts, such as ai says /ā/, au says /aw/, oa says /ō/, and oi says /oy/. This knowledge will give your students some real tools to work with-and there will be nothing to unlearn later!

Baby sitter vowel sounds sounds great! but then I realize there are still words that doesn't follow that rule? Like water, energy, orange, elephant, never, banana... What to do when that happens?

OR, perhaps that kindergartener wrote <AY> because the the long A phoneme is a vowel glide ending in the consonant phone /y/.

When doing the word "malicious" - he used the "al" story, but it's more of a schwa sound, at least in my area. Does Secret Stories include stories & visuals for schwa?
