I purchased a partially completed Rangeline that was hail damaged during construction. I has all the exterior mods complete. The interior has the sub floor and the wiring installed. I have watched your mod videos. They have helped me decipher some of what airstream was going to do. I would like to collaborate with you because you have taken most of the hidden panels apart. Would you be willing to contact me?

My van has the black paint job, and I noticed the metal van shell was too hot to even touch when I was working on it. With the insulation the insides of the cabinets are much cooler now and presumably the whole van will stay cooler in the sun.

What kind of bolts did you use for the fiberglass poptop installation? I wonder if you could just put 2 bolts in the front leading edge and rely on alien tape or other super duty double sided tape for the rest, may making four courses of tape rather than 2. The hope is that if done while the roof is cool, heat expansion would stretch everything tight but within limits. I really appreciate your experimental cutting edge work for our benefit.
@dunclawler2 ай бұрын
1/2" #8 hex screws. I wanted to make sure not to punch through the roof material on the inside. I'm a bit paranoid of things coming off and would be nervous with just two screws and tape. There's a channel down both sides that runs down the middle of the panel so you can't tape there - leaving just 3" on each side for tape.

What exactly is that King roof cap? I am trying to figure out how to mount an OTA antenna to it but it appears to be merely an access point for cabling with one on both sides of van. However, when I removed the curb side cover there were no wires present. I presume I must fish them through from underneath by removing the back cabinet panel. Thanks for your videos!
@dunclawler4 ай бұрын
Yes, the "pre-wire" they have is just some coax cable run behind the curb-side cabinets. You have to unscrew the felt cabinet backs to feed it up from below. The driver side has a bundle of 5 mini-coax that goes over to the curb-side.

Great idea. On my '24 Rangeline, your 3d printed buckles are too wide to fit in the cutouts in the metal frame. I scaled them to 80% when I printed them, but then the 1" strap is a bit tight. I wonder if they changed the size of the cutouts between the 23 and 24s or is it just something with my printer settings.
@GeorgeGrenier-k9h6 ай бұрын
Your videos are great! Thank you. I have a '24 that I picked up 3 weeks ago. When I go into the settings, Battery 1 is my house battery and Battery 2 is my chassis battery. Maybe Airstream watched your channel... I'm going to update the House battery settings per your suggestions. I'm hoping this helps as even on sunny days, my refrigerator seems to use more juice than the solar can charge. Losing about 20% charge per day on the House battery with nothing but the fridge on.
@dunclawler6 ай бұрын
That's pretty consistent with what I see with winter sun - about 20% loss a day just from fridge + lights with solar. I'm planning to upgrade the solar panels this summer which should help. Airstream actually recalled all the 23 units to wire the batteries properly. The 24s were set correctly from the start.

Great video by the way. Besides the layout of your Ridgeline and the Solis (assuming 59PX), were other factors such as price tipped the scale one or another in your decision to go with Ridgeline? I've got a family of 4-5 and we're in the market for a class B that sleeps 4-5 people. Thanks in advance
@dunclawler7 ай бұрын
Yes, the big factors were price, layout, single fuel system and all the options we wanted. There's only seatbelts and beds for 4 in the rangeline. You could add an inflatable mattress across the driver seats for a 5th bed, but I don't see an easy way to get a 5th seat.

You should do YOUR homework. They are the same company and up until a few years ago, Ram vehicles were labeled “Dodge Ram”. The Dodge platform has come a long way since since they've overhauled the previous. They added a couple of gears made the seats more comfortable and hopefully did something with the crappy sound systems while in driving mode that most of these have. I'm on my 4th Dodge ram pickup and the sound systems are kick butt.. I'd love to incorporate that into one of these the only downside is it's only front-wheel drive however it gives you a wide platform in the rear but you should still have the van lifted a couple of inches and put more aggressive wheels on it so many people have done that and it is made a big difference.. adding lithium will allow the rear AC to kick on or have a way to run it off of the second alternator if you have that because the generator will use up a lot of fuel as your traversing down the road for several hrs .. but it is the most affordable platform in the dual twin beds is great for someone like me to put my e-bike inside because it is $12000 and one of the most expensive on the planet. I'd be more comfortable with it inside than out unless I towed a trailer.. I hear so many people talk about quitting van life and I'm just getting started by selling everything at 62 and visiting this beautiful country of ours... At my age I have really nothing to lose..lol... Good luck with whatever you do, maybe you'll change your mind about van life ... But the AC has been a concern of mine to I am ready to purchase real soon

good modification. for a company like airstream, you would think that they would have thought of these issues. relatively simple fix if anyone was listening when the van was being tested.
@jaytabac65259 ай бұрын
have you experienced any issues with the electrical or battery charging? not sure why you would have to rewire the get power from the power tower. should this obvious issue not have been solved by airstream?
@dunclawler9 ай бұрын
No issues with battery charging. The way the solar panel was wired prioritized the car battery which was backwards from what the manual recommends and resulted in very inefficient usage until I rewired it (Airstream has issued a service bulletin to switch it). The galley outlet not being on the inverter is pretty baffling - not sure why they built it that way.
@donnachimenti76 ай бұрын
@@dunclawler I don't fully understand this yet, and am learning about the various ways you get power while driving or boondocking, but am comparing the Solis to this - the induction stove, and refrigerator are easily powered? Do you like it better than the two burner cooktop w/the Solis?
@dunclawler6 ай бұрын
@@donnachimenti7 The induction cooktop works very well and you don't have to worry about cooking fume venting. The single burner can be limiting if you're doing a lot of cooking. The cooktop can easily be powered by the inverter, but the galley outlet for some reason isn't wired to the inverter (see one of my other videos). The only other thing that can't be powered by the battery alone is the AC - that requires running the generator or shore power. The refrigerator will draw down about 20% of the battery a day with no power input, with good solar it's less than 10%.

We are really disappointed with the climate control of our rangeline. If it is 86 degrees outside, it is 86 degrees inside. The air coming out of the AC is definitely cool but that cooling does not reach past the bathroom. Wife factor -100, will be selling our back. Expensive mistake.
@gregoire837610 ай бұрын
Any other specifics - I'm looking hard at the Rangeline and am worried about the real "In Use" issues
@dunclawler10 ай бұрын
We haven't used the AC much (we live in the Pacific Northwest), but it seemed to do fine in Colorado over the summer. I could see how it might struggle to cool the whole van if parked in direct sun in the southwest (especially if you get the black exterior). The reflective shades really help keep the front cool.
@onthegowithgreggsavage9 ай бұрын
Yes they didn't think that went out correctly like most class beads unless you can get the rear AC to operate then you just blowing cold air into a large void behind you.. my recommendation is to block off or isolate the flight deck as we call it in the aviation world.. like put a curtain behind the back part of the front seats. They do that a lot with cargo vans and U-Hauls and you will notice a big difference but if you can get lithium power you'll get the rear AC to work and then it'll be like an icebox in there

Thank you for showing me this issue. I was considering to buy a Rangeline, but no longer considering this van. With the microwave out, you can clearly see there is no insulation, only Lizard Skin. I guess Airstream and Thor believe this is okay. Well, in my opinion it's not. Lizard Skin is good for sound deadening because of the spray on coverage, but that's all it is. This looks like an uninsulated camper van. Obviously, not a good choice for a full-time RV'er like me. Too many issues with the Rangeline; other video's show water leaks and too many other problems. I'm moving onto another brand. Thank you again for creating video's with so much thought and work going into your content.

I've reached a ripe enough age that I've had 2 vehicles where the fuel pump failed. What do you think your Ram service center will say if they ever have to fix this? Is there an aftermarket pump that is quieter? The remaining noise is still relatively loud and would drive me and my wife nuts trying to sleep
@dunclawler11 ай бұрын
This was added by Airstream, so it's not something Dodge would ever fix. It's really not much more difficult to get to either - there's just a panel to unscrew first.
