It's nice, but the always present homophony makes me think of church music. A bit more counterpoint between the parts would make it richer, even if the rhythm stays the same. For instance the violin 1 and cello melody from bar 73 to bar 80. Instead of playing in octaves they could be more intertwined. On the other hand the score is very appropriate for intermediate level musicians or amateur musicians which makes it available for all performers. Speaking as an amateur violist myself. If my (amateur) string quartet were more active I'd love to give it a try.

Oh, I forgot to add, string players might be a bit reserved when it comes to bashing their bow col legno on the last note :)
@benjaminpiano3110Күн бұрын
The col Legno was an attempt to incorporate some more ‘modern’ performance techniques into the piece. I don’t actually like col legno that much in general, and I think that to properly use it in a string quartet (or other) score would require some more thought. So I agree with you 😅

Are thee anyways to turn off gliss?
@benjaminpiano3110Күн бұрын
I find that notes that are ‘detache’ in real life sound closest to notes marked ‘staccato’ in musescore. Therefore in MuseScore I typically just make an ‘audio only’ file which has staccato on many notes, but I remove this for the final sheet music. Does this make sense? There might be an easier way to do it 😅 also you can possibly buy a sound library in musehub which doesn’t have as much gliss 😊 I use one called ‘cinestrings’ which was cheap ($20) and sounds nice, but has similar gliss probably unfortunately haha

I had to give this piece a few listens. I love the fun and wintery feel to some of the sections, plus the bolder opening measures. Excellent piece. I think this piece would really shine with a live quartet. Musescore gives the violins this annoying glissando sound if you write in legato. It's to the point where I wont upload the compositions that suffer from this the most on my KZbin channel
@benjaminpiano3110Ай бұрын
@@hergestthered thanks so much! I’m always thrilled when someone likes the piece 😊😊 Yes I agree a live quartet would be ideal haha, but until then MuseScore will have to do 🙃 Recently I’ve been using paid sound libraries in MuseScore different to the default ones - for example the ‘CineString’ library for solo strings is ~$20 on MuseHub and gives a possibly more realistic sound, which you might find helpful in terms of improving the sound quality, although it might not be the best solution and nothing beats real musicians 😂

How does it not take you anywhere? How exactly? You're just stating non-arguments. Where are your compositions? Let's see them. I'm all for criticism but it should be meaningful. I do think it may linger too long around 2:30 but the piece isn't long enough for it to be a big issue. I really like the way he shifts from the more modern commercial sound when the strings are playing 8th notes in unison back to a more traditional sound. I don't think any given part or melody is that interesting on it's own but I love the structure and the fun attitude the whole piece gives. I can appreciate this piece as someone who really struggles with giving music interesting and cohesive structure.

Sounds great! As a cellist I'd like to give you a few tips to write more idiomatically. The eighth note staccato thirds, while possible, aren't very comfortable. The cellist needs to shift nearly every single time the chord changes and at even moderate speeds they're likely to face some intonation difficulties. I'd recommend redistributing the chord between the viola and cello to have wider intervals or single notes where possible. The octave D at mm. 38-39 is also possible but uncomfortable, and rather difficult to get in tune, as the cellist has to use their thumb to play the lower D. Fine in certain passages, but not really good for anything at speed. At mm. 41-42 and 45-46, the switch between pizz and arco is very fast and liable to cause the bow to bounce or produce an unstable tone. I'd figure out a way to restructure that part if possible. Again, these passages aren't impossible, and if you can't rework them in a way that sounds like you want it to then that's ok. Learning the weird idiosyncrasies of every instrument that you don't play is tough lol
@benjaminpiano31102 ай бұрын
Thanks so much ❤specific feedback is really useful - as someone who doesn’t play the cello it isn’t always obvious what is good writing and what isn’t 😅 thanks for taking the time to go through the score 😊 I will have to make a ‘2nd edition’ edited score which incorporates feedback from you and others to make the piece more playable. Why is in A major? Also, how did you made the tr. sound so good? tr. in Musescore is like nothing. Sounds like a joyride. It looks difficult to play.
@benjaminpiano31106 ай бұрын
I thought A major would be a good place to start given the end of the 2nd movement (which ended in A major). I feel it gives a smoother transition between movements. This being said the 1st movement is in Bb major, which is the nominal key of the quartet. As I think you point out, it doesn’t make too much sense to say the quartet is in Bb major given most of the quartet is in A major for a fair amount of time. (Although technically as the 1st movement is in Bb major it doesn’t matter what the other movements are - it’s perfectly allowed to say it’s in Bb major). Nevertheless it would probably have been a better artistic choice to have this movement end in Bb. Oh well - there is very large variety of quartets being composed these days (incorporating atonality, extended techniques, non-traditional sounds, forms, etc.), and I’d argue that the fact the key of this movement is A and not Bb is a fairly minor consideration. Any quartet who wants to play it is free to transpose everything up a semitone if they like 😂 Perhaps I should remove ‘in Bb major’ from the title and just call it ‘Quartet No. 5’. With regards to MuseScore - there are a few different types of trills you can add to a note, you can add the ‘tr’ symbol or one that looks like ‘tr~~~~~~~~~~~~’ which gives an extended trill for the duration of the note. The latter is what I used here which gives a much nicer, sustained trill. Also note that MuseScore is not so good with flattened/sharpened trills (ie a trill with the higher note a semi tone higher or lower than otherwise indicated by the key signature) , it doesn’t like them and I can’t figure out a way to make it play them except to change the key signature in MuseScore momentarily, for the purposes of playback only.
