Love the Ferris Sweep. Typing on it now. For me I have used combos to access things like (){}[]. This has worked very well for me. I use single and double quotation marks so often, I put them on FD and JK combos. A flat Ferris Sweep with foam wrist wrests is my comfort driven end game.

The sound varies almost completely depending on what switches you decide to put in it. Or any of other options available. A video with all the options would probably be days long. Nearly all the options don't include key switches, as many of us (most, even) have a different preference, and don't want to buy switches we won't use.

@@pariahzero So then why can every other custom mech board have sound tests? This is honestly just a poor scapegoat answer for a board that probably sounds like trash.

@@typegeist ... there's "custom," with weasel quotes, where you get to choose a few nearly inconsequential options. That's the kind of "custom" keyboards most makers do. To sell any _wireless_ device, it has to pass various regulatory bodies for radio interference (FCC, and its non-American equivalents. I'm sure you can guess where I'm from.) This is extremely expensive and time consuming, and I've seen the process bankrupt several companies. Most of the wireless DIY boards you see use pre-certified modules, that are "plugged in" to the keyboards. The problem is that these plug-ins make the keyboard thicker, mechanically weaker at the plug/socket, and are not as reliable because of the many-pinned socket. Mechboards looks like it is going with a board that doesn't use the plug-in modules. It's the same choice that the open source Corne keyboard project went with for their v4 keyboard revision. Also: keep in mind: LED's are power hungry, and there's little room to put a battery. It's doubtful there would be much battery life even if you crammed in as much as possible.
@praenotoКүн бұрын
for wireless, you can buy a wireless corne kit. the group buy is over now, but you could have just bought the case and inner components separately to make it wireless. you wouldn’t get exactly the same features though because oleds are murder on the batteries that work with these builds
@pariahzeroКүн бұрын
@@praenoto the wireless Cornes also use an off-board plug-in module (such as the Nice!Nano) which is already regulatory certified for wireless. It's not _quite_ the same base PCB. It'd take me minutes to set up a fab order to get ten fully populated wireless Corne keyboards - fully assembled & tested with SMD reflow. I don't have the need for ten keyboards. So if I decide to pull the trigger, setting up a group buy is a likely route. I just don't want to deal with other people who expect a full warranty and product support for what is classified as prototype hardware.

I bought a ferris sweep 3 months ago. I consider myself a minimalist. I have used many keyboards like lily58, glove80, corne. When I started with the ferris sweep I thought I made a mistake and started seeing other keyboards with a some more keys. I sticked with the ferris sweep and personalized to my exact use case and has been the best keyboard experience I ever had, even better than the glove80 because of the little finger movement. I even consider the ferris to be more ergonomic (for me) than the glove80. I feel that I'm always on the home row. So if you try a ferris sweep, do not abandon it quickly, adjust it and take your time. The curve may be steep at first but is worth it. BTW, if you haven't used split keyboards before, I recommend something like the lily58 that is easier to learn and then move gradually to the sweep.

Tiny keyboards just can't be for me because they have to be too tailored to how one might use particular or limited set of software or environments/OSes. I'm too spread out in terms of "what I do", and prefer remain just as functional with standard stuff when I possibly am needing to temporarily use someone else's hardware or move around with a laptop format. I use a split keyboard with a thumb cluster, but that's about as far as I go. Happy with a Glove80 for the super comfortable curved keywell and reach, and keeping it QWERTY. One thing I see with the Glove80 that no other split keyboard of any size does comprably well is line up J/K with the same two fingers that control up/down. Though up/down needs to be swapped, that makes them the same two fingers as the vim motions.

Really glad to see you starting to modify the keymap later in the vid. When you go lower than 60% there's no one-size fits all. When you go lower than 40 something keys I think you really need to put some thought and trial-and-error into finding what works for you. Some people like to put a lot of work on their thumbs (like thumb shifting), others love home-row mods, and others swear by combos (which is perhaps the gateway to chording and going less than 34 keys). Hold-taps (tap acts like one key, hold acts like another) for things like brackets and frequently used symbols can also be really nice for programming unless you're allergic to small delays when typing symbols.

To do wireless, you either have to use a pre-certified wireless module (like the nice!nano), or send your design to be certified by every government whose nation you ever intend to sell to. (OfCom, FCC, CE, etc, etc.) Wireless certification bankrupts companies. It's one of the reasons why many of the open hardware designs of the Corne, Soffle, lily58, and similar use plug in modules. It gives end-users flexibility to change the module and use a wireless one. The thing is: the open hardware crowd who design them are (and are aware they are) working on prototype devices, not finished products.

Oh man! I bought one of these years ago, I loved the process of soldering. The "it's not great as a keyboard" is unfortunately too true, but that's kind of why I love it? It's a simple little device that invites you to encounter it's rough spots and still find use in it. It was my first "complete" project that used a mic - but now I'm on to making little personal cyberdecks and doodads - it's all for a hobby, but I cannot recommend it enough, especially if you haven't done anything like this before. It's almost meditative to solder so much, and then when you power it on and press some buttons you get this little gremlin in you that says "BUILD MORE"

You've piqued all of OUR interest but there are still a lot of folks who don't know what it's called. It would be beneficial to see it in the hands of folks in the keyboard community - Folks who know the difference between Cherry and TX stabs or maybe even have some on hand or know how to adjust and tune them. Take the time and build it right and I think you'd benefit from more community input and support. This video alone should have ten times the views it has! Ya'll are doing it right and you're building an absolutely amazing piece of machinery and it'll be nice to see it in action more.
