Jason Blume's articles, for example, from "How to Get the Demo You Need": "Advance preparation includes being sure your songs are as strong as they can be, and are indeed worthy and ready to be recorded. For those still honing their songwriting chops this can be achieved by getting professional input prior to scheduling the recording session. You will also need to determine the key in which your song will be recorded. If you are working with a demo service that handles the production responsibilities and provides the vocalist, they will choose the key for you. If you are hiring vocalists, get them a rough recording of your song prior to the session. They should be able to suggest the key that will sound best for them. It’s a good idea to test the suggested key in advance by having the vocalist (or yourself, if you are the vocalist) sing the highest and lowest parts of the song. Try various keys. For example, if you think the song should be in the key of “A,” you might see if it sounds even better in “G#”or “A#.”

Apologies but I have to take issue with Robina here regarding metadata for Sync. At 1:06:55 she mentions " that info has to be in your metadata. Period" . This statement is simply is not true. I have over 700 tracks in production libraries now and not one of them has ever required one piece of metada embedded within the deliverables. Whilst it's true that Metadata can be stored in the WAV file chunks ( often using the INFO chunk for basic information ), it's not standardised and most common playback clients won't read it. Every production music library I have ever dealt with has other methods for ingesting the metadata that negates the need to have it withiin the file, either via their own portal/platform as part of the online form you have to fill in as part of the upload process. This normally includes genres, moods, keywords etc as well as writers info, splits etc. Or the more old school libraries send you a spreadsheet to fill out. Having it embedded into the audio file is pretty moot as they rarely get read, are often transcoded for sub-publishng which can erase it all anyway and if your music goes into any of the big sub-pubs they add their own metadata that's distinct from what you originally filled in ! I dread to think how much time I would have wasted filling in 700 cues worth of metadata that was uneeded !
@mytrackstage18 күн бұрын
Hey - thanks for this! You're not wrong, and I could have been more specific! Once you're with a library and are providing deliverables, no you don't need to worry about metadata. Most do that for you. It's during the BEFORE phase, when you are first trying to connect with music supervisors and with libraries or publishers, that you are at risk of missing out on opportunities if you don't have embedded metadata. Especially in the direct-to-supervisor realm where most will not have upload sites with ingesting machines. Missing metadata is a huge issue in the industry and the artist absolutely plays a part in that. As for WAVs, yep, definitely don't want to be pitching those. As I mentioned the ubiquitous AppleMusic doesn't play with WAVs. MP3s with their full complement of metadata are the way to go for pitching. :-) And yes!!! filling out metadata can be brutally tedious and time-consuming. Which is why we built TrackStage. Lots of autofill, and direct tagging cuts down that effort dramatically. Especially when you have multiple cues coming from a single primary track. Really appreciate the comment and it's a reminder for me to be clear on the precise whens and whys of metadata tagging. derp! (and congrats on all those library cues. Looking forward to when I can say the same for my catalog!) --Robina
