What Gene Krupa didn't play on drums didn't need playing......but he wasn't alone....at that time there was a wealth of fine drummers, as you might expect in The Great Age of Jazz. However, Krupa, almost single-handed, thrust the drums into the solo spotlight. Example?...the rideout drumming of the 1938 Carnegie hall, Sing,sing,sing...repeated in subsequent playing of that seminal number, as here. The narrator here is Steve Allan who portrayed Goodman in the film,'The Benny Goodman Story'.

The guys in classic quartet seen in this great video were all Kings; THE “King of Swing,” clarinetist/leader Benny Goodman and his Quartet mates (Krupa, pianist Teddy Wilson, vibraphonist Lionel Hampton-and nobody on bass, a pretty radical idea in itself); spurned by Goodman’s leadership, they fearlessly broke through the strict segregation of the 1930s - 1940s.

In my opinion, Gene Krupa was the best drummer of his generation and much more so of course there was Buddy Ricth but Gene had a style apart from a way of playing without equal and until today I have never heard or seen anyone make him freelance he was a musician apart from an unparalleled talent I have great respect for this great man RIP ❤❤❤❤❤

The jazz drummers were the coolest in my view. Ginger Baker was first a jazz drummer, then he added a double bass and became a wild man rock drummer.

Buddy Rich always tuned his snare much higher than Gene..
@rhythmfield
@rhythmfield 4 ай бұрын
Not really that much higher actually - but BR kept the snares tighter. Gene had a looser warmer sound from a buddy was more precise and brutally intense. Both are master Drummers and probably loved each other.

Krupa has been my hero since I saw the "Gene Krupa Story" with Sal Mineo around 1960, and I saw the movie 12 times. Since then Krupa solo's have been playing in my head for the past 60+ years. In my humble opinion, Buddy Rich was faster but Krupa was more musical (if that makes sense).

I'll take Gene or Louie Bellson over Buddy Rich any day and twice on Sunday!!! For one, Rich is a shithead of a person and all i hear on any Rich solo is fast noise, not music, too many people confuse speed with being great!! Rich was just overexposed to the masses by Johnny Carson, before then people knew of players like Papa Jo Jones, Joe Morello, Hal Blaine and Gene😮

My Dad played me Sing Sing Sing right before I first picked up a pair of sticks, back in '84. The performance at the beginning of the video, I bought as a cassette in '91 and it was played as often as my Rush albums. Then I find out that amazing live album was filmed! That was a good day. The album was Gene Krupa, Ace Drumming Man. It was yellow.

I've been a good friend of Gene's for many years and to this day I'll never forget the moment me and a couple of buddies saw his show at the Savoy, rolling on the floor with unstoppable laughter, you see, Gene shit all over himself while performing wearing a white tux, he just rented, the look on his face was undescribable must have been the fettuccine Alfredo and the Strawberry Soda.

Extremely tricky piece to conduct and play for the orchestra, this is the clearest and most musical version I've heard, and Glennie's performance the most artistic and individual, and her mallet sound is less percussive than most other players of this work. She is a miracle. When was this performance?

At about 3:38, the man at the bottom right of the screen is the great crooner, Mel Torme. He was the host of this show. He was also a great drummer although the public rarely saw him play the drums. Except....this time we get to see and hear not only Gene Krupa, but Mel Lewis and then Buddy Rich comes up on stage and Mel Torme himself sits down at one of the drum sets. This was an incredible performance to watch and listen to these four incredible drummers on stage at the same time. Mel was also one of the great 'scat' singers such as the incomparable Ella Fitzgerald and her famous 'scat' singing. I know this video is about Gene Krupa, but I do not think he would mind if I put in a plug for Mel Torme. Frank Sinatra said that Mel Torme was one of the greatest singers he had ever heard. That says a lot coming from Sinatra.

I"m gonna say it. Gene is a better drummer than Rich. why? because he was so musical in what he did. He understood the band and the audience. He was also way on the cutting edge. I have heard Buddy in a small combo and frankly, in a small combo setting RIch stunk! Rich was good in a big band. Gene could go anywhere and make it good cause he let the music flow baby!

I’ve been saying this for decades. Of course it depends on your preference, but I’ve always leaned towards more musical drummers and Gene was that over Buddy. The ladder had blazing technique and if you’re into that stuff, then you’re gonna prefer him most likely. Joe Morello seems to be a combination of the two which lands him on my number one spot.
