man how boring of you to waste your time on the continuity of the eclipse like it's "a mistake". Also the match cut of the worm ride works BECAUSE it cuts from a moving object to a still one, THAT'S what makes it punchy and surprising. Your version at 6:28 is much less effective because it doesn't have that punch. Same thing for your so-called "fix" at 9:58, your versions are so much more jarring, like you cut from an empty sky to another empty sky

I didn’t waste my time, I just mentioned it the second time I watched it! And good for you, for your opinions :)

The last stab does not make sense because of the movement that Feyd makes on Paul's left side, his arm goes down at the end and the knife appears stuck in the upper right

True! They should have planned the fight choreography better, especially for such a scene that’s basically the apex of the entire movie.

@@Cubichead the sandworm scene took months to film so i can imagine they didn't have much time for the fight, still they are humans mistakes happens.

Totally agree, human mistakes happen! But, based on my main profession which is VFX, those could have been easily fixed during post production process, had they been spotted… my guess is that they forgot about them or they didn’t even realize they were there in the first place.

Good eye. I've noticed myself, during Paul's test, when Paul is awaiting the approaching worm atop the dune crest, the sun keeps switching from the left side of the sky to the right side of the sky. In one cut, the sun is lighting Paul from the left, a cut or two later the sun is lighting Paul from the right. It's tricky to keep track of but the sunlight switching happens several times. Even the sunlight & shadow on the approaching worm switches once. Also in that scene, the worm, at the last moment does not go to the thumper where Paul placed it down to the left but veers far to the right and hits the dune where the thumper isn't. Odd eh?

Good catch, I didn’t realize it. But I must say, that happens more often. Usually cinematographers prefer to have better shapes in shadows/highlights in each shot rather than sticking with the direction of the light source throughout the whole sequence, but I agree that it should happen in a way that is jarring and ppl like us would mention it.

Hi, i have a question: how can i change the stroke to a but cap instead of a round cap? Thanks :)
@Cubichead
@Cubichead 7 ай бұрын
Hi Silver, unfortunately with this approach you can’t change the caps, they are stuck with round caps. If that’s your priority to have butt caps, you have do this with Shapes instead of Masks, and this whole setup doesn’t work with shapes. Sorry to disappoint you!

Can i do this in non comercial version
@Cubichead
@Cubichead 7 ай бұрын
I believe you can do all of this. But remember, you can’t open your non-commercial nukescript with a full version later, and all data is stuck in the non-commercial version. Also, keep in mind that you can only export HD files from non-commercial.

There's a much easier way to stabilize this shot. All you have to do is track the camera and remove any translation values from the camera that make the camera move down the street. That means if you orient the camera right, remove say the Z translation. Why? Because 90% of camera shake is nodal shake (rotation only) and then there is only a small amount of remaining camera shake that is moving up and down vertically (y direction). Then you would simply project your footage ontly a cube which represents the scene's road,building walls, etc. Obviously if you project onto a cube you will get hard lines so how do you solve this? Make a cube in say maya and smooth it so the edges are soft. And the best part about doing this is you don't take a double filtering hit since you only go through a scanline 1 time Not only did your stabilization not produce a good result but it also did not produce a "locked-off" result which is important for using the background for a driving comp.

It’s true that we a nodal stabilization, we can make it happen for this specific shot, but the point from this tutorial is that it would be applicable for most scenarios and in many situations we just don’t have nodal point camera shake, especially when you are walking and you have a up-and-down motion on the camera (like a sine-wave) and just fixing the rotation won’t be enough. In regard to filtration, I am not using scanline twice, I used it once. I would assume you have seen the entire video before writing such a comprehensive reply! Thanks anyway for commenting.

@@Cubichead my point is it DOES solve up and down camera shake. My method is not to solve nodal camera shake only. But what my method does that yours does not is produce a "locked off" result which is the type of stabilization you would desire for this type of shot your method only produces a "smoothed" version of the camera. It is useful as a stabilization method though if you project onto a sphere. I did use it for another shot

Sorry to hear that, maybe some of the default parameters of your nodes are different than mine, for instance your default mask setting is set to a different channel :-? Otherwise, I am using vanilla version of nuke and if you follow my steps exactly one by one, you should end up with the same result

This is absolutely unbelievable. You're obviously a genius. I thought I'm good with the 3d workflow in nuke, but I'd have no idea how to fix this shot. What you have done, and how you matched the stabilized footage to the original one using those reformats etc, is just amazing.

Well, there is more obvious problems in this movie from VFX point of view that over-saturated shadow in two or three frames - for example the rocket systems on the top of the hills over the canyon are just TOO BIG and too obvious, they looks like anything but real stuff. And story? Well, there is no way to survive ejection from the disintegrating aircraft flying Mach 10 speed, I think there is only ONE known case when pilot was ejected in speed just over Mach one and survived, but with terrible injuries. Mach 10 is just not possible. Maverick is just an pure entertaining, a sequel of quite naive 80's movie, and one must be really silly to get it seriously. There is no way to conduct any dogfight between any 5th generation fighter and F-14, the whole idea of 5th generation is to be stealth and destroy enemy aircraft from distance too far to any counter-action being possible, including machine guns.
@Cubichead
@Cubichead 2 жыл бұрын
Oh definitely, that mach 10 scene was pure fiction (at least, based on our current technologies). I was just trying to stick with the original script as much as possible and don’t drastically change the whole story, just some bits and pieces here and there. But %100 I agree with you!
