WEEK 30 - HGCBC MORNING SERVICE LORD'S DAY: 28-JUL-2024 *SCRIPTURE READING: Ezekiel 38 Bro. Jeremiah Arellano *MORNING SERMON: Luke 19:1-10 Bro. Jay Brun "THE VILEST SINNER" Focus Text: “He entered Jericho and was passing through. And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich. And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully. And when they saw it, they all grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” - Luke 19:1-10 ESV "THE VILEST OFFENDER" Introduction and Context: - There are different versions of the Hymn 'To God be the Glory'. It says "The vilest offender who truly believes, that moment from Jesus, 'the Father receives' / 'a pardon receives' "- but the focus here is "the vilest offender" - One of the vilest offenders that we see in the NT is depicted in the story of Zacchaeus. - There were multitudes of people following Christ: "skeptics, those , some treats Christ as miracle worker, some would like to benefit from Christ. - Zacchaeus found great salvation when Christ saw him in the sycamore tree. "NO SINNER EVEN IF HIS WICKEDNESS REACHES THE HEAVENS IS SINFUL ENOUCH TO BE OUTSIDE OF THE SAVIOUR's REACH" 1. WHAT PREVENTED HIM TO COME TO CHRIST - There are two hindrances - (i) Vocational Hindrance- He is the chief tax collector. They are infamous for their abominable business. - ref. Romans 13:7 - The Lord instituted taxation because he instituted the government - John MacArthur. - However, it was abused during that time - (ii) Moral Hindrance - His primary problem is that 'he is a sinner'. - To the public it also means that he is the chief of sinner as he is the 'chief' tax collector. - ref. Matthew 11:9 - Like Zacchaeus, there is no moral fitness in anyone. 2. WHAT PUSHED HIM TO COME TO CHRIST - verse 6 - (i) We see Zacchaeus' desire to see Christ out of curiosity. - This mere curiosity was used by God to save him. - (ii) We see Zacchaeus' effort to see Christ. - He was an outcast of the society recognized by Christ. - (ii) We see Zacchaeus' willingness to obey Jesus. - A picture of effectual call - Zacchaeus' willingness and gladness to obey Christ. - This effectual call is of God’s free and special grace alone, not from anything at all foreseen in man, nor from any power or agency in the creature,1 being wholly passive therein, being dead in sins and trespasses, until being quickened and renewed by the Holy Spirit;2 he is thereby enabled to answer this call, and to embrace the grace offered and conveyed in it, and that by no less power than that which raised up Christ from the dead. - 1689 LBCF 10.2 - Zacchaeus responded with gladness. 3. WHAT PLEDGE HE GAVE CHRIST - (i) A great confession - (Scholars suggest that Christ stayed for several days in Zacchaeus' house). In verse 8 - Zacchaeus already addressed Christ as Lord. - ref. Romans 10:9; - (ii) A great resolution -Zacchaeus said "...the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold.” - ref. Numbers 5; Exodus 22:4-7; Exodus 22:1 (the highest degree of repentance) - Zacchaeus went up the sycamore tree as a convicted sinner and went down as a converted sinner. - TWO TRUTHS heralded by Christ to Zacchaeus. - (1st truth) - verse 9 "Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham" - What does it mean to Zacchaeus: Just like Abraham, righteousness is accounted to him as a result of his repentance and faith. - Matthew 3:9-10 (John the Baptist's warning to the pharisees) - Romans 2:28-29 - (2nd truth) - verse 10 "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost." - Christ came to seek and save the lost. - Romans 3:10-12; Ephesians 2:1-3 - We are not lovers of God, we are inclined to things that are opposite of what God is. - ref. Jeremiah 34:16 (It is God's work) - ref. Matthew 1:21 (Man gets the credit in God's salvation) - Jeremiah 29:12 (Seek God - though we seek Him because God sought us first.) - (iii) Evidence of conversion - - May our confession of faith be visible in our Christian life. - Zacchaeus was a chief of sinner yet [based pn history], he was ordained as bishop of Caesarea and died proclaiming the gospel.

Week 29 - HGCBC MORNING SERVICE LORD'S DAY: 21-JUL-2024 *SCRIPTURE READING: Ezekiel 37:15-28 Bro. Armel Jay Mercado *MORNING SERMON: 1 Corinthians 1:26-29 Ptr. Jeremiah Jangad "A BUNCH OF NOBODIES" Focus Text: “For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.” 1 Corinthians 1:26-29 ESV Introduction and Context: - Paul wrote the Epistle to the Corinthians to address various issues. - Paul starts to address the problem of division. He knows that behind the problem of division is human pride. - To deal with this, Paul cited 2 important points: (i) The gospel proclaimed and (ii) the church membership examined. 1. THE GOSPEL PROCLAIMED - Paul did not communicate the gospel through worldly standards. Paul communicated the gospel as being 'foolish' [to the world]. - 1 Corinthians 1:18 - The gospel tells us that we are sinners and we are under God's curse - with this, it is NOT appealling to the world. - The gospel can convert the lost without appealing to human philosophy. - When it comes to evangelism [in the church] - "[In salvation] None is excluded because of human deficiency, and none is included because of human superiority." #hgcbccpulpit - Paul's first method aims to combat the sin of pride in the church of Coeinth. - "The gospel produces humility in us. It always humbled us. It is God's primary means to combat pride in us." #hgcbccpulpit 2. THE CHURCH MEMBERSHIP EXAMINED - If we examine the church composition in Corinth, it is the same composition in all churches today. Their background is not impressive based on worldly standards. - It implies that we are a bunch of nobodies. We do not have any reason to brag. - "The church of Jesus Christ is composed largely of people who are considered as 'bunch of nobodies' according to worldly standards." #hgcbccpulpit - The church of Corinth wanted influence and better reputation in the community. - (“...not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth.”1 Corinthians 1:26 ESV) *Paul chooses to identify three things (i) wisdom (ii) power (iii) pedigree/prestige - The point is 'God chooses'. In the same sense that salvation is unconditional election. - God chooses the foolish things of this world. Paul reminded them that God can use unexpected, unpredictable and undignified way of preaching the gospel. - Pride doesn't give us true happiness, what gives us happiness is the Word of God giving us assurance that we are His people. - God called His people to Him. They are the elect, the effectually called believers. - God always has enough witness so that there is a witness in every segment of society. - "Trusting and boasting are essential matters of life and they are a great measure if we are anchoring our life in the Lord. Do we trust and boast in the Lord?" #hgcbccpulpit - "Election makes man nothing and God everything." #hgcbccpulpit - ref. Luke 11:5-8 - We should pray persistently and importunately, and our motivation to pray is to acknowledge our nothingness. - Our preaching should reduce people to nothingness. We call unto God who is everything when we are reduced to nothing.

WEEK 27- HGCBC SUNDAY SCHOOL LORD'S DAY: 07-Jul-2024 Ptr. Jerrmiah Jangad “THE INDWELLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT" Focus Text: “In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,” Ephesians 1:13 ESV Introduction and Review: A. PRE-REQUISITE TO CONVERSION - Regeneration means to re-become. Without this pre-requisite, Conversion will be impossible. 1. Regeneration is NECESSARY 2. Regeneration is INSTANTANEOUS 3. Regeneration TAKES PLACE BY THE SPIRIT AND THE WORD B. NATURE OF CONVERSION 1. TWO GRACES OF CONVERSION - (a) REPENTANCE - Turning away from self and sin - (b) FAITH - Turning to Christ as Lord and Savior - In conversion, the Holy Spirit breathes life to a dead soul. - That soul is able to turn from self to Christ C. FRUITS OF CONVERSION 1. THREE DISTINGUSING MARKS - (a) DEPENDENCE - (b) OBEDIENCE - (c) LOVE This week: - All believers are being in dwelt by the Holy Spirit . - We study and recognize the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in all believers. - One of the difficulties is - when did the Holy Spirit start to indwell in the life of a Christian? - "Indwelling of the Holy Spirit" refers to the gift of the Holy Spirit - When does the Spirit indwell us? - ref. Acts 1 - "You shall receive the Holy Spirit". The language means it is definite. - ref. Galatians 3:2 - When they believe, they receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. - The Holy Spirit is the promised seal. - Anyone who does not have the Spirit of God does not belong to God. - ref. Romans 8:9 - (i) The Holy Spirit gives life to the soul (REGENERATION) - (ii) The Holy Spirit gives repentance and faith (CONVERSION) - (iii) The Holy Spirit is received by the soul and the Holy Spirit indwells the soul (INDWELLING) ERRORS: - 1st error: "The believers in the OT does not have the Holy Spirit". - Correction: All believers in the OT was saved in the same fospel that we hold. They embraced the same gospel. - David says "Take that the Holy Spirit from Him" which means that David acknowledges the Holy Spirit guven to him. - 2nd error: The error of Extreme pentecostalism: "A believer may be saved but still don't have the gift of the Holy Spirit" - Correction: ALl true believers is being indwelt by the Holy Spirit. It is given tk us as the indwelling minister. - ref. Psalm 32:1-5

Week 27 - HGCBC MORNING SERVICE LORD'S DAY: 07-JUL-2024 *SCRIPTURE READING: Ezekiel 36:16-38 Bro. Psalm Torres *MORNING SERMON: Hebrews 5:11-14; Hebrews 6: 1-6 Ptr. Jeremiah Jangad "SPIRITUAL GROWTH" Focus Text: “About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.” - Hebrews 5:11-14 ESV “Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. And this we will do if God permits. For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt.” - Hebrews 6:1-6 ESV Introduction and Context: - The Hebrew church is composed of Christians with Jewish background. The Jewish community despises the Christian faith. - In the context of this suffering, some 'Jewish Christians' are considering tk abandon the Christian faith and return to Judaism. - "A true believer will persevere despite the greatest affliction." #hgcbccpulpit - The pupose of the author of Hebrews is to extol the Lord Jesus Christ - that He is far greater than anyone and the completion of the whole covenant (first three verses) - Christ's priesthood is superior than the Levitical priesthood. - He rebuked the Hebrew believers because they remained immature. - In Christianity - Maturity is the evidence of life. - Spiritual growth is not an option but a must - It is expected of all true believers that they will grow mature in the faith. 1. STAGNATION - ref. Hebrews 5:11-14 - The principal of growth is universal: A child grows progressively to adulthood. - ref. Luke 2:52 - We all start as spiritual infants to maturity. It is a life-long process. - ref. Hebrews 5:12-14 - "A spiritually mature person will become more discerning. His life will become more and more edifyig to other believers." #hgcbccpulpit - ref. 1 Peter 2:2 - Spiritual growth is aided by the ministry of the church: ministries, fellowships. et al. - "As we grow in maturity, we are already able to minister to younger believers. We are able to instruct others" - ref. 1 Timothy 3:6; Titus 1:9 (pastoral qualifiaction) Let your growth be evident to all. Every problem in the ministry is an opportunity for growth. - Hebrews 6:1-3 (Expectation for growth) - Every Sunday is God's marching order to proclaim the gospel. - "The best pastoral counselling is still in the context of the public proclamation of the gospel" - Don Green - 2 Peter 3:18 (Stagnation should be avoided) - Spiritual growth is commanded. Thus, it must be obeyed. - Apostasy does not happen overnight and unexpectedly. It happens because of the absence of spiritual growth. - 2 Timothy 3:5. 2. WARNING - ref. Hebrews 6:4-6 - There are Armenians, interpreting this that believers will lose their salvation. This is inconsistent with God's preserving grace. - We can interpret this as a hypothetical warning (as per Charles Spurgeon) - The reality is that there are people who have fallen into apostasy. - ref. Hebrews 3:12 - Apostasy is real in every generation. There are those who profess Christ but are not really Christians in the forst place. - ref. 1 John 2:19 - Moral influence in the society does not necessarily mean conversion. - "You can have a mind full of knowledge but the heart remains unrepentant. You can have the benefits of gospel proclamation but it can be used as a tool of judgment for you" - ref. Hebrews 4:6 - "The author warns it is impossible to return from apostasy." - ref. Hebrews 3:13 - "Christian fellowship is giving advise daily. It is still in the purpose of edification in the grace of God." #hgcbccpulpit - "There is a danger in open willful sin against the knowledge of truth.." - ref. Numbers 15:30-31 - "There is an expectation for all believers that we will grow. No Christian will remain stagnant. There is an expectation of progress in Christian life. There is also an assurance of perseverance. The warning is that some have already turned away. If some have turned away, we can assume that they weren’t really converted in the first place.” - If you turn away from God's only way of salvation, where will you go? The only way is the redemptive work of Christ. - Are you convinced that Christ have the absolute right over your life? Then the decision to surrender your life and submit to His Lordship should be NOW.

Week 26 - HGCBC MORNING SERVICE LORD'S DAY: 30-JUN-2024 *SCRIPTURE READING: Ezekiel 36 Bro. Vincent Tombaga *MORNING SERMON: Psalm 51:16-19 Ptr. Mike Dairo "AN OFFERING THAT GOD DELIGHTS" Focus Text: “Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, O God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. Do good to Zion in your good pleasure; build up the walls of Jerusalem; then will you delight in right sacrifices, in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on your altar.” - Psalm 51:14-19 ESV - It was taken from the chapter where David prayed (the sinner) after Nathan confronted his sin with Bathsheba. - On previous verses, David declared his offense. - David recognized in himself that he sinned towards God. David appeals for God's compassion and forgiveness. - David declares his penitence and his native condition as a sinner and because of this he longs to be absolved. - He wanted the joy of his salvation to be restored - There is fellowship disrupted and joy is set aside when we sin. "AN OFFERING THAT GOD DELIGHTS" - The humble disposition of David caused him to see that he has been a bad testimony. - David saw that his sin also affected God's people as well. - It caused him to move into prayer to teach the transgressor His righteousness. - It moved from "evangelistic seal" to the concept of "Worship" 1. DAVID's REALIZATION OF HIS OWN STATE. - “O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.” Psalm 51:15 ESV - He recognized His own sin but not just to remove His guilt. He knows that the removal of that guilt is joined in God's disposition. - David knows that God sees beyond the external acts. - We may cover sin with external acts but not before God - Lord does not delight in your sacrifices if you are hiding or If you are partsking in sin - God sees what is in our hearts, may we not be blinded with our own deceitfulness. - "We can offer a thousand sacrifices with our lips, yet not delight God. God sees the pretension and the hypocrisy of the heart" #hgcbccpulpit - God himself prescribed the sacrifices. - ref. Lev 3 - It was pointing to the greater reality of Christ's sacrifice where God is pleased. - May we not be lip movers but our hearts are not far from God. - Matthew 15:7-9 - God delights the right disposition of the offerree. God sees through humility. - God does not despise a broken heart, He notices and looks upon it with tender care. - ref. Isaiah 66:1 - "We may come to God to worship, indifferent to our sin yet foolishly deceiving that God will accept our praise and sacrifices. " #hgcbccpulpit - Busyness in church life and ministries does not always mean genuine worship. - It is the humble disposition in the work of God through the Holy Spirit - that is the basis of our sacrifice - Christ and His work. - Inward disposition does not cancel proper worship - Along with the right worship is the right heart and the right disposition. - We cannot come to God in clean hands. We need to have washed and cleansed hands thru Christ. 2. DAVID's CONSIDERATION OF GOD's PEOPLE - “Do good to Zion in your good pleasure; build up the walls of Jerusalem; then will you delight in right sacrifices, in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on your altar.” Psalm 51:18-19 ESV - He wants people to be saved that sinners may be converted. - David having tasted the favorable dealings of God, longs for his fellow citizens to experience this as well (the forgiveness, the joy) - David pleaded for God's goodness to his people. - David's desire for God's goodness to his people is both physical and spiritual. - David's desire was for their lives to be so intricately interconnected. - "How intricately connected are your lives to the covenant community where God placed you? Do you value your local church?" #hgcbccpulpit - God provided a platform for sacrifices with the right disposition of the heart. - David's desire is for the temple and the wall to be protected and preserved but not isolated. - May we desire that all nations be blessed through us. - Our worship with God is with greater light, we have a clearer view than David because Christ has come and He has revealed Himself. - "Let us be grateful for the compassionate God is drawn towards the broken and contrite in spirit. When was the last time that you thank God for saving you? When was the last time that you were broken over your sin?" #hgcbccpulpit - ref. Hebrews 10:19; John 4; 1 Timothy 2:1-4 - "We, as a church has a mandate - that we may be used as a salt and light of the world. That we go out to the world bearing light, strengthened and your sword sharpened. " #hgcbccpulpit - No amount of mere religiosity can absolve you from your sin. - "If there is a sacrifice acceptable to God- it is only through Christ. It is only through that - that we can come to the throne of grace. Knowing he forgives, our lips should bring forth praise." #hgcbccpulpit

WEEK 20- HGCBC SUNDAY SCHOOL LORD'S DAY: 19-May-2024 Ptr Jeremiah Jangad “THE HOLY SPIRIT's WORK UPON CHRIST - (Part 2) ...IN HIS BAPTISM AND MINISTRY" Review and Introduction: A. The WORK of the HOLY SPIRIT upon CHRIST IN HIS BIRTH AND GROWTH - There are two natures in one person of Christ 1. The Holy Spirit formed Christ's physical body and soul 2. The Holy Spirit endowed Christ's human nature. 3. The Spirit matured Christ's human nature Future Topics: B. The WORK of the HOLY SPIRIT upon CHRIST IN HIS BAPTISM AND MINISTRY - The Holy Spirit played an important role in Christ's ministry. - John 1:32 (The Spirit especially came upon Christ. The Spirit descended from heaven during Christ's baptism. He took a visible form that resembled a dove.) - The Spirit remained upon Christ to empower His ministry ahead. - Christ's ministry involves (i)Temptation (ii) Preaching Ministry (iii) Miracles 1. The Holy Spirit in CHRIST's TEMPTATION - Luke 4:1-2 The Holy Spirit brought Christ in the wilderness where he was tempted by the devil for 40 days) - Unlike the first Adam, Christ was not overcome by the devil. - Christ is the ultimate portrayal on how a man should be. He is also the ultimate portrayal of Israel (how the servant of God should be). He was led and empowered by the Spirit. - Christ's humanity was dependent upon the Holy Spirit. Christ's divinity did not lessen God's humanity and Christ's divinity did not lessen Christ's humanity. - The Lord Jesus, in His human nature thus united to the divine, in the person of the Son, was sanctified and anointed with the Holy Spirit above measure,13 having in Him all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge;14 in whom it pleased the Father that all fullness should dwell,15 to the end that being holy, harmless, undefiled,16 and full of grace and truth,17 He might be thoroughly furnished to execute the office of a mediator and surety;18 which office He took not upon Himself, but was thereunto called by His Father;19 who also put all power and judgement in His hand, and gave Him commandment to execute the same.20 ~ 1689 LBCF Chapter 8. 3 2. The Holy Spirit in CHRIST's PREACHING MINISTRY - Enabling Christ to preach the gospel - ref. Isaiah 61:1-3 - The Holy Spirit empowered Christ in His public ministry. - It was by the Spirit that our Saviour is an effective and wise preacher. 3. The Holy Spirit in CHRIST's MIRACLES - ref. Acts 10:38 - God annointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit and power. - Christ performed miracles not because He was God, It was by the power of the Holy Spirit. - We must rely on the Holy Spirit as we battle against sin. Future Topics: C. [The work of the Holy Spirit upon Christ] IN HIS DEATH AND RESURRECTION

Week 21 - HGCBC MORNING SERVICE LORD'S DAY: 26-MAY-2024 *SCRIPTURE READING: Ezekiel 32:17-32 Bro. Aries Jake Montilla *MORNING SERMON: 1 Corinthians 1:17-18 Ptr. Jeremiah Jangad "TWO CATEGORIES OF MEN" Focus Text: “For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” 1 Corinthians 1:17-18 ESV - The Apostle Paul expanded his statement that he was not sent to baptize but to preach the gospel (not with words of eloquent wisdom.) - In verse 18, Paul categorized people into two (i) those who are perishing and (ii) those who are being saved - Everyone falls into one of those categories 1. THOSE WHO ARE PERISHING - It is in the progressive present tense. - They are already in the process of perishing. They are already in the road to perdition and headed to destruction. - 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9 - Also refers to the self-destructive nature of sin. - "Sin is self-destructive. All sins are against us. It never works in favor of the one who is committing the sin." #hgcbccpulpit - ref. 1 Corinthians 6:18 - ref. Galatians 6:8; Romans 1:18 - The wrath of God is a present reality. - Sin will dreadfully lead to eternal damnation. - Those who are perishing treat the Word of God and the message of the cross as 'foolishness'. - Roman people during the time of Paul rejected the notion of a crucified Messiah. The Greeks value their human wisdom and philosophy. - In present times, the message of the cross is considered foolishness to some because of it's 'over-simplicity'. (Christ as the substitutionary sacrifice so we can be reconciled to God) - "The cross stands in bold opposition to the natural man. Its philosophy runs contrary to the processes of the unregenerate mind" - A.W. Tozer - ref. Psalm 14:1 (the fool says in his heart "there is no God".) - Some people know the demand of the gospel that it requires repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ). But they love their sin that they dismiss the gospel as foolishhness. 2. THOSE WHO ARE BEING SAVED - A term of sharp contrast was used - the conjunction 'but'- asserting that every person is either on the 'perishing' or on the 'being saved' side. - The Bible talks about salvation in past tense (Justification), present tense (Sanctification) and future tense (Glorification). - In this verse, It talks about a present tense salvation signifying the progressive sanctification of believers. - We are being saved from the power and influence of sin. - It is the power of the cross that sustains us at present. - The gospel is the power of God unto salvation. The message of the cross is that the eternal son of God became a curse for us ~ the just for the unjust. - Only God’s people understand that without the powerful message of the cross, we would be lost and without hope. - The gospel needs to be preached at all times becuase we are prone to forget. - Romans 3:26; 1 Peter 3:18 ; God demands a salvation plan which is consistent to His character. - The infinite price demands an infinite payment, which is why hell is infinite. All those who think they can pay by themselves will need to pay for eternity. - ref. 2 Corinthians 1:10; Hebrews 7:27 (The blood of Jesus Christ alone can pay for the penalty of sin) - "Christ has broken the power of reigning sin in the lives of the true believers. Yes, at times we fall but we mourn over and repent of our sins." #hgcbccpulpit - "The same power behind creation and the same power that worked in the death and resurrection of Christ is the same power that sustains us in our Christian journey." #hgcbccpulpit

Jeremiah Jangad "PARABLE OF THE SOWER - PART 2: THE WAYSIDE HEARERS" Focus Text: ”Again he began to teach beside the sea. And a very large crowd gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat in it on the sea, and the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land. And he was teaching them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them: “Listen! Behold, a sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it. Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and immediately it sprang up, since it had no depth of soil. And when the sun rose, it was scorched, and since it had no root, it withered away. Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. And other seeds fell into good soil and produced grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.” And he said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”“ - Mark 4:1-9 ESV Review and Introduction: - This teaches us about the four kinds of hearers and four kinds of hearts. - This parable is widely recognized and familiar to many. - Its language is easily comprehensible to readers or listeners. - The language of this parable is easy to understand. A. THE WAYSIDE HEARERS: A HARD HEART 1. THE DESCRIPTION - ”And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it.“ Mark 4:4 ESV - This seed fell along the path. (There is always a portion in the farm area which is hard and uncultivated) - As the farmer moved on, the birds came and devoured these seeds. 2. THE INTERPRETATION - This fallow ground is hard. It represents a type of heart where the hearers will hear and sit, but they will not have the intention to listen.” - When the word of God is preached to them, they are totally indifferent, as they are not interested in the word of God. - Their hearts are unconcerned and hardened. This could be due to religion or tradition. - The wrath of God abides upon the sinner but this kind of hearers don't have any concern at all. - What is being preached that this kind of hearer has no concern at all? (i) That Christ not only forgives; He grants a new heart. (i) There is only one mediator between God and men. - These messages were not to be found in that ground anymore. The word of God did not bear fruit in their hearts. - Biblical examples of wayside hearers: (i) Herod heard the preaching of John the Baptist yet his heart was hardened. (ii) King Agrippa heard the teachings of Apostle Paul. (iii) Governor Felix heard Paul’s preaching about righteousness, sin, and repentance. - The hearts of men, by nature, is unconcerned and indifferent because of sin. - The Word of God gives us real evidence of true believers - ref. John 10:27 - i.e. (i) Augustine was a wayward son, but Monica continued to pray. Eventually, Augustine became a true believer in Christ. (ii)Paul was exposed and familiar to the law but he was eventually confronted by the law. - If your heart is characterized by indifference, even though you are in the church, this is the kind of heart you have. - The salvation of man is the working of the Holy Spirit. Our hope is that the Holy Spirit will work in this kind of heart through hearing and hearing the word of God.

Week 19 - HGCBC MORNING SERVICE LORD'S DAY: 12-MAY-2024 *SCRIPTURE READING: Ezekiel 31 Deacon Lorenzo Tating Je. *MORNING SERMON: 1 Corinthians 1:14-17 Ptr. Jeremiah Jangad "THE ESSENCE OF GOSPEL PREACHING" Focus Text: ”I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, so that no one may say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.“ 1 Corinthians 1:14-17 ESV Review and Introduction: - 1 Corinthians 1:11-17 addresses the unity inside the church. - 1 Corinthians 1:14-17 emphasizes the unity - In the proclamation of the gospel. (As there is no fellowship between light and darkness.) - Our central mission is not to compete with other churches; rather, it is to proclaim the gospel. - Paul’s purpose is not to minimize the importance of water baptism, only that he did not need to be the one administering it. - John 4:2 (Christ did not personally baptize people) - Paul was not sent to baptize, he was sent to proclaim the gospel. - Water baptism is the first step to obedience of being a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ. - The Corinthian believers loved wisdom and they desired to package the gospel with the language of wisdom applicable to their time. - Churches nowadays also want Christianity to be aligned and relevant to the world. However, we should recognize that the world doesn’t desire the gospel. - "If your preaching do not touch the problem of the human heart, it is not a true preaching of the gospel at all." #hgcbccpulpit - The message of the cross is a stumbling block and follishness to natural men. - Seeker-driven worship. It is a convenient worship. They want to reshape the gospel to a gospel that everyone will admire. - Why do you need the gospel in the first place? You will not appreciate the good news if you do not know the bad nees. We have ti proclaim the problem of man that he is a sinner in the sight of God. WHAT IS THE ESSENCE OF THE GOSPEL? 1. GOSPEL PREACHING IS AN AMBASSADORSHIP - ”For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power." ~ 1 Corinthians 1:17 ESV - There is a sense in which gospel preaching is an ambassadorship and we are Christ's ambassadors. - We are accountable to God. - "We do not operate by strategizing how to preach the gospel and make it appealing to the desires of men. Our concern is the desire of the King of kings and Lord of lords.” #hgcbccpulpit - We are operating under the authority of the King of kings and Lord of lords. - 2 Corinthians 5:20 (We are speaking in His stead) - It is an urgent message. ref. Romans 1:18 - The wrath of God is a present reality. God is appealing through us. It is God making His appeal through the proclaimer of the gospel. - "Reconciliation with God is an urgent matter because the wrath of God IS revealed from heaven against all unrighteousness and ungodliness of men." #hgcbccpulpit 2. GOSPEL PREACHING IS A TRUST. (IT IS A CHARGE.) - “We must safeguard the integrity of the gospel and prevent it from becoming corrupted.” - Galatians 1:6-8 - ref. Jude 1:3 (it is a faith that is once and for all delivered to the saints) - The gospel is given to us wholly. It is a complete gospel. - Paul subjected himself to the scrutiny of the gospel. Therefore, it is a message that we should not modify to please the crowd. - ref. Galatains. 1:10 - We are to simply and faithfully proclaim the gospel. - The gospel is a trust given to all and it should be passed on the next generation. - ref. 1 Corinthians 9:16-17 - "Faithful gospel proclamation keeps the church alive " #hgcbccpulpit - It is.... "A charge to keep I have, A God to glorify" (Charles Wesley) - ref. 1 Thessalonians 2:4 - "The true gospel is never appealing to people. The natural man will reject the gospel." #hgcbccpulpit - "The motive of gospel proclamation is not to please the crowd but to please the one who sent us. " #hgcbccpulpit - 1 Timothy 1:17 (It is a stewardship. We do not produce the gospel, it is just entrusted to us) - ref. Titus 1:1-3 3. GOSPEL PREACHING IS A PRIORITY. - Baptism was given as an ordinance for the church to observe. However, Paul asserts that it is not the priority of his ministry. The priority is the proclamation of the gospel. - God has gifted men to preach the gospel. - "The gift of teaching belonged to a few while many were allowed to baptize" - John Calvin - "Baptism doesn’t save; rather, it is faith in response to the message of the cross that saves.” - [ ] APPLICATION - "In today’s generation, preachers are expected to be entertainers and emotionalists, putting on shows and relying heavily on music to appeal to people. As a result, the flesh is magnified." #hgcbccpulpit - The pastor is given to the church to admonish people with the word of God. - ref. Amos 8:11, - Let us not minimize and diminish the importance of preaching. The Bible puts so much emphasis on it. - ref. Mark 1:13; Mark 1:37-38 (The Lord Jesus Christ elevated preaching; i.e. Noah was a preacher who happens to build an ark, Solomon was a preacher who happens to be a King) - 1 Corinthians 1:21 (The world sees preaching as foolishness) - 2 Timothy 2:10; Romans 10:13-17 (We should put emphasis in gospel preaching. Paul is arguing for the importance of preaching ministry within the church. - ref. John 20:21 - ref. 1 Thessalonians 1:5, 2 Corinthians 1:20 (We employ Word and verbal communication - ref. Isaiah 1:3,5 (God's charge); Isaiah 1:18 (God's promise) - "God, in Christ, is a reconciled God. Apart from Christ, He is an angry God.” - "When we proclaim the gospel, we are bringing the good news of reconciliation. We are not entertainers, we are proclaimers of the gospel." #hgcbccpulpit

Week 17 - HGCBC MORNING SERVICE LORD'S DAY: 28-APR-2024 *SCRIPTURE READING: Ezekiel 29 Bro. Vincent Tombaga *MORNING SERMON: 1 Corinthians 1:10-11 Ptr. Jeremiah Jangad "CHURCH CONTENTIONS" Focus Text: ”I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers.“ 1 Corinthians 1:10-11 ESV Review and Introduction: - 1 Corinthians 1:11-17 addresses the unity inside the church - Paul rebukes them as he addresses the lack of unity in the church of Corinth. Unity is of utmost importance, as division arises from its absence. - He also addresses the divisions and factions inside the church - If Satan cannot charm us, Satan can still harm us through divisions. - If our relationship is strained, it will also impact the worship and spiritual walk of believers. - In a survey, churches have reported that over the past five years, only 2% of conflicts within the church relate to doctrinal issues, while 98% stem from interpersonal issues. Additionally, 40% of church members leave due to conflicts. 1. THE SOURCE OF THE REPORT - "For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers." - The report came from the household of Chloe. - Many commentators believe that Chloe is a businesswoman. It motivated her people to send this problem over to Paul in Ephesus. - It teaches us a practical lesson, We should put a signature in all our reports. - "He [Paul] does not go beating about the bush, but he speaks straight out, and gives the name of his informants, for persons who bring reports about others should always be ready to have their names mentioned. It may be unpleasant for them, but it is sometimes necessary to do unpleasant things, and those who will not allow their names to be mentioned in connection with a statement adverse to character deserve no notice whatever." ~ Charles Spurgeon on 1 Cotinthians 1:11 2. THE PROBLEM OF CONTENTION - It’s not just about differences of opinions but quarrels resulting in divisions. - "Contentions may originate from differing opinions, escalate to recruiting others, and culminate in schism. This kind of behavior and reasoning is of the flesh." #hgcbccpulpit - "Contention" is from the Greek word ἔρις ('eris') - which means ; a quarrel, that is, (by implication): -, debate, strife, variance.; describes a contentious person or a person with disagreeable spirit. ; a contention because of envy (as per one commentator) ; a spirit that is born of competition (as per one commentator); essentially the sin that olaces the self in the foreground (as per one commentator); The word ἔρις "eris" describes a man who has forgotten that the humble ones are those who will be exalted. They hate being surpassed by others." - ref. Romans 1:29, Galatians 5:20 (the term 'eris' was mentioned along with idolatry, homosexuality and other grievous sins) - In conflicts and contentions, It is the reputation of Christ and the gospel that is at stake. - We do not treat science as the ultimate authority. - "In the final sense, it is not majority that rules. It is the Word of God that rules." #hgcbccpulpit - When the unbeliever learns that we have disputes that cannot be resolved internally. They will see no difference. - Let us be resolved that we will not be used by Satan as instruments to fuel church division. - "What makes believers different from unbelievers is that we have been forgiven. Because we have been forgiven, then we should be able to forgive others." #hgcbccpulpit - Paul still called them 'brethren' despite of the negative report. - ref. John 13:1 , John 13:34-35 (Christ loved the apostles despite of their faults, failure and foolishness) - “We should love our brothers despite their faults, failures, and foolishness. They are our brothers in the Lord-they ain't heavy. Our love for them despite these should last until the very end.”#hgcbccpulpit - ref. John 13:35 ; The result of the love to the brethren - ”By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:35 ESV - The will of the Holy Spirit is to reconcile differences in the church. - "The standard in tuning every aspect of the church is the LORD Jesus Christ." #hgcbccpulpit - When we turn our focus away from Christ to personality. The reputation of Christ is at stake. - ref. Ephesians 5:18; Ephesians 4:31 - When we dwell together in unity. Our unity must be based on truth. - ref. Colossians 3:12-14 - We are always in danger of conflict and division. That's why Paul reminded us that we should be diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Week 05 - HGCBC MORNING SERVICE LORD'S DAY : 04-FEB-2024 *SCRIPTURE READING: Ezekiel 17:1-24 Bro. Psalm Torres *MORNING SERMON: Romans 16:21-27 Ptr. Jeremiah Jangad "GOD IS ABLE TO ESTABLISH HIS CHURCH" Focus Text: ”Timothy, my fellow worker, greets you; so do Lucius and Jason and Sosipater, my kinsmen. I Tertius, who wrote this letter, greet you in the Lord. Gaius, who is host to me and to the whole church, greets you. Erastus, the city treasurer, and our brother Quartus, greet you. Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages but has now been disclosed and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith- to the only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ! Amen.“ Romans 16:21-27 ESV - Paul concludes by extending greetings to the Roman Christians, acknowledging the diverse members within the church, including high-ranking officials, the wealthy, and the less fortunate. - "In the body of Christ, everyone holds significance; though there are varying positions and roles, no one is beyond the reach of God’s saving grace." #hgcbccpulpit - v.25-27 - Paul ends with a Doxology. - verse 25 - ”Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages“ - Paul recaps the whole epistle of Romans in verses 25-27 1. THE ABILITY OF GOD TO ESTABLISH HIS PEOPLE - "Now to Him..." Paul starts with a benedictions (brings us infinitely upward) - "The greatest thought is the meditation about God of who He is. " #hgcbccpulpit - "There is no higher thought, there is no higher glory than the thought about God." #hgcbccpulpit - "Here the apostle solemnly closes his epistle with a magnificent ascription of glory to the blessed God, as one that terminated all in the praise and glory of God, and studied to return all to him, seeing all is of him and from him." - Matthew Henry - Isaiah 53:4; Hebrews 4:15 - The gospel we proclaim is the same gospel that God uses to strengthen us. - The church is being constantly assaulted left and right but the church will remain strong. God has the ability to establish His people. - ref. Romans 11:33-36 - "When we walk with God every day, When we see God's glory every day, our heart will be filled with praise. - How we treat the day of Sabbath is a culmination of God's working for the whole week. - The goal of theology is God's glory. - ref. Ephesians 1:3 - "If you know that the ultimate goal of the gospel is not your happiness but the glory of God, you'll rejoice despite difficult circumstances." #hgcbccpulpit - The glory of God is the total of all His attributes. - "When we are most satisfied in God and nothing else, we will see the glory of God. " #hgcbccpulpit - ref. Ephesians 3:20-21 2. THE MEANS THROUGH WHICH THE LORD ESTABLISHES HIS PEOPLE - It is through the gospel - a message that God graciously sent His son to bear the penalty that we deserve. It is the power of God unto salvation. - "The only gospel of God that establishes men and establishes the church is the gospel that proclaims Jesus Christ." #hgcbccpulpit - At the heart of Paul's epistle is all about the person of our Lord Jesus Christ. - A message without Christ is a phony gospel. - The picture of an established Church: It is despite of dark providences, you still have peace a - It is God who establishes His church. It is through the "true gospel" (Paul citing as "my gospel") - "Q: How is the word made effectual to salvation? A: The Spirit of God makes the reading, but especially the preaching, of the word, an effectual means of convicting and converting sinners, and of building them up in holiness and comfort, through faith, unto salvation" - Westminster Shorter Catechism #89 - He establishes His church through the power of the Holy Spirit, but God uses means. - ref. 2 Thessalonians 3:3-4 - ref. Acts 20:32 - 'Establishing' is through and in Christ. We should have a dealings with Christ. - ref. 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 - It is the gospel [God's Word] that establishes the church and the people of God. - God establishes His church and His people - it involves repenting of one's sin and trusting in Christ instead of one's good works.

Week 05 - HGCBC AFTERNOON SERVICE LORD'S DAY : 04-FEB-2024 *SCRIPTURE READING: Jeremiah 48:1-24 Bro. Aries Jake Montilla *AFTERNOON SERMON: Hebrews 2:2-4 Pastor Jeremiah Jangad "THE GREAT SALVATION" Focus Text: ”For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.“ Hebrews 2:2-4 ESV - There are various rhetorical questions presented in the Scriptures. - i.e. What profit is it for man to gain the while world and lose hIs own soul? Nothing. The answer is nothing. - But there are rhetorical questions that we cannot answer: ”How shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? " 1. A PROVISION - There is a provision of 'salvation' - Salvation : It is not about religion or moral values formation. - Salvation means deliverance from sin, from God's wrath, from God's judgment and from the bondage of sin. - The deliverance by Jesus Christ's blood and righteousness is far greater. - God is the God of justice and He will not let the guilty go unpunished. - Q: Has there been a moment in your life when you have fully repented of your sin and fully put your confidence in Jesus Christ? - ref. Hebrews 1:1-2 - Salvation introduces us to a living person: to the second person of the Trinity - the Lord Jesus Christ - the Savior of lost sinners. - Have you seen the real worth of the Lord Jesus Christ? Have you seen that He is Lord, that He is Savior, that He is the judge, that He is King and Kings and Lord of Lords? - "If you see the real worth of Christ, you will yield unto Him and trust in the redemptive work of His blood and righteousness. " #hgcbccpulpit - "You can never add anything from what Jesus Christ has done and you can never take anything from it either." #hgcbccpulpit - This salvation is very great. - Sin is transgression to the law. If we realize that God must come first and foremost and finally in our lives, then we will discover that we have broken the law of God. " #hgcbccpulpit - Salvation is to see yourself as a sinner and to see Christ as your only Lord and Savior of sinners. 2. A POSSIBILITY - There is a possibility that people will neglect the provision [of Salvation] - The nation of Israel neglected the great salvation. - It is dangerous to neglect this provision. - "It is a great danger for a man to neglect the welfare of his own soul by neglecting the great salvation found in Christ alone." #hgcbccpulpit 3. A PROBLEM - How is it possible to escape judgment if we neglect such a great salvation? - The only solution is our Lord Jesus Christ. - There is no other sacrifice acceptable but the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ - The gospel message tells you to consider your soul and come to the Savior. - "[To Christians] You cannot save everyone, but you can be instrumental to someone's salvation by spreading the gospel and proclaiming the work of Jesus Christ" #hgcbccpulpit

Geno Miravalles *AFTERNOON SERMON: Hebrews 6:1-3 Deacon Isagani Azur "SPIRITUAL MATURITY" Focus Text: ””Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. And this we will do if God permits.“ - Hebrews 6:1-3 ESV Introduction: - These passages presents a solution to address the spiritual struggles of the readers. - They are in danger of going back to Judaism because of pressure and persecution 1. WHAT "LEAVE" ENTAILS IN YHIS PASSAGE - "Leave" (from Greek word ἀφίημι "aphiēmi" means total detachment or separation from a previous state or condition - ref. Matthew 9:2; Romans 4:7; James 5:15 - ref. Matthew 15:14 - When we were forgiven , sins were separated from us - This means that they need to grow beyond the teaching of Judaism. - In the Old Testament we see the types and shadows of Christ- in the New Testament - we should go beyond the types and shadows because Christ already came. 2. WHAT TO PURSUE TO HAVE SPIRITUAL MATURITY - 2a. They [We] must go beyond... "LAYING A FOUNDATION OF REPENTANCE FROM DEAD WORKS" - ref. Hebrews 9:13-14 - They only know of repentance and turning to God. - ref. Matthew 3:2; Matthew 4:17 - ref. Acts 20:21; teach us about the object of faith who is ChristS - Talks about repentance and believing in Christ - ref. Acts 26:20-23 These verses highlights and focuses on Jesus Christ's redemptive work. - Only Christ is the mediator between God and man. - 2b. They [We] must go beyond... "LAYING A FOUNDATION OF FAITH TOWARD GOD" - It is not only about repentance but about repentance and faith in Christ - Acts 2:38; Acts 11:17-18; Acts 4:12 - Their repentance and faith towards God cannot be redemptive without Jesus Christ. - Judaism often recognizes Jesus as a teacher but does not believe in him as a Messiah and denies the necessity of his sacrifice. - 2c. They [We] must go beyond... "THE INSTRUCTION ABOUT WASHINGS/ BAPTISM" - in Greek, it points out to "washings" - In Ezekiel. it was mentioned that these ceremonial washings will be replaced. - Ezekiel 36:25 - The new washing is the renewing of the Spirit. - It now refers tk A "washing" that is permanent through the Holy Spirit - ref. Titus 3:5; John 3 - 2d. They [We] must go beyond..."THE LAYING ON OF HANDS" - pertains to ceremonial sacrifices in the Old Testament - ref. Leviticus 1:4; Leviticus 3:8; Leviticus 3:13 - In the New Testament, our knowledge and union with Christ is not thru laying of hands. It is thru the work of the Holy Spirit. - We are identified kn Christ by faith in Christ. - Lay hold of Christ by putting our faith jn Him. We will have our communion with Christ thru kur fsith. - 2e. They [We] should go beyond... "THE RESURRECTION OF THE DEAD" - ref. Job 19:36 - John 11:25 ; Christ declares that He is the Way the Truth and the Life. - 1 John 3:2 ; All believers will have a glorified body as Christ. - 2f. They [We] should go beyond... "THE ETERNAL JUDGMENT" - Ecclesiastes 12:14 - Our knowledge of the judgment is limited but the New Testament tells us about Christ's second coming and judgment. - ”There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.“ Romans 8:1 ESV - There is ni condemnation for those who believe in Christ. - ref. 1 Corinthians 3:12-15 - ref. Revelations 20:11-15 (White Throne Judgment) - The eternal judgment can be seen in the new covenant - John 5:21-25 (Jesus Christ is the appointed judge) - [ ] APPLICATION - "Now, he bids them to leave these rudiments, not that the faithful are ever to forget them, but that they are not to remain in them; and this idea appears more clear from what follows, the comparison of a foundation; for in building a house we must never leave the foundation; and yet to be always engaged in laying it, would be ridiculous. For as the foundation is laid for the sake of what is built on it, he who is occupied in laying it and proceeds not to the superstruction, wearies himself with foolish and useless labor. In short, as the builder must begin with the foundation, so must he go on with his work that the house may be built. " - John Calvin on Hebrews 6:1-2 - "We ought to progress past the fundamental teachings of Christ and strive for maturity " #hgcbccpulpit - The more we know Christ the more our faith is strengthened in Him. - Exploring the depths of our knowledge about Christ is key to reinforcing our faith in Him - On Hebrews 6:1-2 ; "They are guided to surpass the teachings of Judaism; while the Old Testament holds significance, they are encouraged to give beyond these teachings and embrace faith in Christ. - Christ's redemptive work on the cross is sufficient.

Week 04 - HGCBC MORNING SERVICE LORD'S DAY : 28-JAN-2024 *SCRIPTURE READING: Ezekiel 16:35-63 Ptr. Jeremiah Jangad *MORNING SERMON: 2 Timothy 2:20-21 Ptr. Jeremiah Jangad "VESSELS OF HONOR" Focus Text: ””Now in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and clay, some for honorable use, some for dishonorable. Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work.“ 2 Timothy 2:20-21 ESV Introduction: - [Context] v. 16-18 ; Paul has been talking about the false teachers within the professing church. - ”and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus,“ 2 Timothy 2:17 ESV (Paul describes the false teachers) - "False doctrine and an unchristian spirit in the midst of the church itself must be regarded as such a gangrene, a silent wolf ravenously gnawing at the heart, the vulture of Prometheus devouring the vitals: no external opposition is one-half so much to be dreaded. " - Charles Spurgeon - Paul affirms Timothy that the church made of God's true people will not fail and will be victorious because they are secured by God. - We persevere because God preserves us. God works in us. - The true Christian's profession will continue to manifest their confession thru holy living. - This is Paul's illustration in order to explain further the things discussed in verse 14-19 1. THE FIGURES - 1a. THE GREAT HOUSE - A large mansion; possibly of dignified or prominent people - 1b. GOLD AND SILVER VESSELS - Signifying of high or intrinsic value - Highly durable vessels being displayed in a "dish cabinet." - 1c. WOOD AND CLAY VESSELS - Signifying zero to low market value; - Non-durable, wood turns to ash when burned, clay has no intrinsic value otherwise as good as to be thrown away. - Cheap and utilitarian. When they are broken, they are discarded. - They are not being displayed. 2. THE MEANING OF THE FIGURES - 2a. MEANING: THE GREAT HOUSE - The visible church of the Lord Jesus Christ ; - It represents the visible Christianity. - On the vessels; representing 2 kinds of believers. (as per John Macarthur) - On the vessels; represents the elects and the reprobates. There is an undeniable mixture of believers and unbelievers. (as per Spurgeon and Calvin) - 2b. MEANING: SILVER & GOLD VESSELS - In the church there is a mixture of believers and unbelievers (as per John Calvin and Charles Spurgeon) - represents the "BELIIEVERS" (as per John Calvin and Charles Spurgeon) - Vessel of Honor - "The Elects" (Romans 1:29) - The true church of Christ is composed of vessels that are valuable. - ref. John 10:28 - 2c. MEANING: WOOD & CLAY VESSELS - It represents the professing Christians (may look good outwardly but no intrinsic value within) - It talks about the reprobates - Vessel of Dishonor - "The Elects" (Romans 1:29) - Matthew 13:24-30 (There is a mixture of wheat and tares but God knows who are His children) 3. THE EXHORTATION BASED ON THE EXPOSITION OF THE FIGURES - The difference between believers and unbelievers should be distinguished. - ”Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work.“ - 2 Timothy 2:21 ESV - Only God can cleanse a sinner. We don't have the ability to cleanse ourselves. - "Cleanse yourself" simply means avail yourself the means of cleansing provided by God thru Jesus Christ. - Acknowledge that you need cleansing. Let Christ's blood and righteousness cleanse you. - False beliefs is as much wicked as actual sins done by men. - Repent and believe in Jesus Christ that you will be vessels of honor. - God is sovereign. God can use even the unbelievers but that doesn't mean God's salvation towards them. God can use anyone to accomplish His purpose. - Apostle Paul is presenting us with that choice. Would you prefer to be vessels made of gold and silver, or vessels crafted from clay and wood? - ref. Acts 4:27-28; Proverbs 16:4 - [To believers] Golden and silver vessels are being defiled and need constant cleansing. Confess all known sins to Christ. "As we walk on earth, we get defiled by sin time to time. But there is forgiveness and cleansing in the blood of Christ." #hgcbccpulpit - [To Unbelievers] Go to the cleansing gospel. Come to Christ and avail of His cleansing.

WEEK 04 - HGCBC SUNDAY SCHOOL LORD'S DAY: 28-Jan-2024 Ptr Jeremiah Jangad “BROTHERLY LOVE: ITS NATURE” Review: ***BROTHERLY LOVE - Love to the brethren is essential to Christianity. - Brotherly love is not an option. It is a must. 1. ITS IMPORTANCE - 1a. IT IS A NECESSARY GRACE FULFILLING THE LAW - ref. Galatians 5:14 (Emphasize the neccesity of love) - 1b. IT IS AN ACTIVE GRACE MOTIVATING THE SOUL - This is the only valid motivation for the soul to perservere in the ministries where God placed us. - 1 Thessalonians 1:3 - Love is the quickening power. - 1c. IT IS A BEAUTIFYING GRACE TEMPERING OUR GIFTS - "Whatever duties you do perform, be they never so great and glorious, never so useful one to another, to any of the members of Christ; if they are not quickened and animated by this love, they are of no value to thy communion with Christ, and edification of the church. " - John Owen - 1d. IT IS A DISTINGUISHING GRACE VERIFYING OUR PROFESSION - Whatsoever we think of our profession, if there be not an intense love unto the brethren, we have neither the truth of grace, nor evidence of God’s love to us, or of our love to God."- John Owen - ref. 1 John 3:14 - ref. Romans 8:38-39 - "Love is the greatest because it will endure forever, whereas faith turns to sight and hope ends in possession" - 2 Timothy 1:16-18 (Paul is NOT praying for the dead- it does not support praying for the dead) THIS WEEK: 2. ITS NATURE - "Love entails three things; (i) The desire for union; (ii) The enjoyment of satisfaction (delight/complacency); and (iii) The mark of good will (benevolence) " - William Ames - 3a. THE DESIRE FOR UNION (DESIRE) - if you love the brethren, you desire for unity. - You avoid any thing that will disrupt unity in the church. - ref. John 17:20-26 - The standard of unity is the unity between the Father and the Son. - Love to the brethren is manifested in the desire to have union with them; (i.e. church membership) - 3b. THE ENJOYMENT OF SATISFACTION (DELIGHT/ COMPLACENCY) - There is delight in being with the brethren. - Complacency - means the cause of pleasure and joy - Delight in others for Christ's sake. You ought to love the company of the church. - We delight in them as objects of God's electing and Christ's dying love. - ref. Psalm 16:3 - ref. Philippians 4:1 (apostle Paul speaking in the same expression) - "Complacency [Delight] is the very essence of love , and the ground of all proper complacency in the saints is their relationship and likeness to God. We should feel peculiar delight in each other as fellow heirs of the grace of God..." - 3c. MARK OF GOOD WILL (BENEVOLENCE) - We have the heart to support our brothers' needs, both spiritual and practical - "Love enlarges the heart and frees it from the bond of selfishness. Love makes us desire others welfare as well as our own" - Let us desire in our heart that the brethren will be blessed in physical and spiritual well-being - "Brotherly love is that spiritual benevolence and affectionate solicitude which Christians have one toward another, desiring and seeking their highest interests" - Arthur Pink - "What is love? I answer briefly, It is a fruit of the Spirit of God, an effect of faith, whereby believers, being knit together by the strongest bonds of affection, upon the account of their interest in one head, Jesus Christ, and participating of one Spirit, do delight in, value, and esteem each other, and are in a constant readiness for all those regular duties whereby the temporal, spiritual, and eternal good of one another may be promoted." - John Owen - "The main thing in that love which is the sum of the Christian spirit, is benevolence, or goodwill to others. - We have already seen what Christian love is, and how it is variously denominated according to its various objects and exercises, and, particularly, how, as it respects the good enjoyed or to be enjoyed by the beloved object, it is called the love of benevolence, and as it respects the good to be enjoyed in the beloved object, it is called the love of complacence. Love of benevolence is that disposition which leads us to have a desire for, or delight in, the good of another. That is the main thing in Christian love, yea, the most essential thing in it, and that whereby our love is most of an imitation of the eternal love and grace of God, and of the dying love of Christ, which consists in benevolence or goodwill to men, as was sung by the angels at his birth (Luke 2:14). So that the main thing in Christian love is goodwill, or a spirit to delight in and seek the good of those who are the objects of that love." - Jonathan Edwards - 1 John 3:16-18 - Jesus Chris, because of His love towards sinners like us, sacrificed His life in the cross of Calvary. It was a sacrificial and dying love. Christ has paid it all. FUTURE TOPICS: 3. ITS EXPRESSION 4. ITS PATTERN 5. ITS PROMOTION

Week 01 - HGCBC MORNING SERVICE LORD'S DAY : 07-JAN-2024 *SCRIPTURE READING: Ezekiel 14 Bro. Jay Brun *MORNING SERMON: Romans 16:20 Ptr. Jeremiah Jangad "THE GOD OF PEACE" Focus Text: ”The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.“ Romans 16:20 ESV Review: - Previous verses talk about marking those people creating divisions in the church-divisive men and false teachers. - Paul commended the church in Rome for their great testimony while also reminding them of their significant responsibility. Three Divisions in this passage: (1) The God of Peace; (2) The Crushing of Satan; (3) The Grace of Christ 1. "THE GOD OF PEACE" - "The God of peace..." verse 20 - Paul calls our attention to the fact that God is the God of peace - The gospel truth always causes divisions among men but not in the church of Christ. - The truth unites us. It is the false doctrine that divides - ref. 1 Corinthians 14:33 - 1a. THE GOD WHO MAKES PEACE - What's your state in front of God? Are you a friend or enemy of God? - ref. Ephesians 2:3 (There is no peace for the wicked) - How can you be at peace with God? You need to be reconciled with God. - ref. Ephesians 2:3 (The fallen nature of man) - There is a deep seated enmity with God in a man's heart. - ref. Romans 8:6-7 - When you experience the goodness of God, it should cause you to repent - God has righteous hostility to us. God hates sin and He knows that He should punish it in the day of judgment. - How can God sanctify a person who actively fights Him? The enmity and hostility should be removed through Christ. - Christ established peace with His blood and righteousness. He is the Prince peace. - "Do not misconstrue delayed judgment as not judgment at all. Repent now or perish forever!" #hgcbccpulpit - If you are not in Christ then you are still an enemy of God. - ref. 1 John 1:9 - Even in our Christian life, we still continue to fall short of the glory of God. - Our sins cannot change the love of our God. - ref. Proverbs 19:11 - It is God who took the initiative for you to have peace with God. - 1b. THE GOD WHO SUSTAINS PEACE - He removed the enmity between God and the sinners. - It is God who faithfully sustains peace. - ref. 1 Thessalonians 5:23 (Sanctification has so much to do with obedience and obedience brings forth peace). - "It is in obeying God that He will give us peace" #hgcbccpulpit - "First thing that we should consider when we are passing through trials is obedience to God. " #hgcbccpulpit - i.e. Isaiah 8:17-18 - To be at peace with God is to obey God. - Obedience is closely linked to peace. Active disobedience robs us from peace. - When we obey God we are only unprofitable servants, but in the process of doing so peace will reign in us. - The key to peace is the obedience to the Word of God. - Psalm 119:165 - When people revile us we should not revile in return. Entrust your care to God. - Are you experiencing God's perfect peace in your hearts? Prioritize obedience. - 1c. THE GOD WHO COMPLETES PEACE - God did not only call us to believe but to suffer for His name as well. - James 1:2 (count it pure joy when you are experiencing trials) - Rejoice based on God's promise - All things work together for good - i.e. Moses - ref. Romans 8:18 - As believers in Christ - We have peace that passes human understanding. - ref. Romans 8:10 - ref. Philippians 3:20-21 - Our priority should be obedience. In obedience is God's peace. Prioritize obedience. - [To unbelievers] Be reconciled to God through the Lord Jesus Christ - the sole giver of true peace. FUTURE TOPICS: 2. "THE CRUSHING OF SATAN 3. "THE GRACE OF CHRIST"

WEEK 01 - HGCBC SUNDAY SCHOOL LORD'S DAY: 07-Jan-2024 Ptr Jeremiah Jangad “CHURCH's ROLE IN EDIFICATION: GOD's GIFTS to THE CHURCH" Review: - Holiness should not be taken out of context - There's no holiness apart from God - Our sense of security in a building relies on its foundation. (Edification pertains to a building.) - Edification - It refers to the nurturing of the church as a whole. - Church is the community of professing believers. - "The church is the primary context of our edification" - John Calvin 1. SPECIFIC MEN AS GIFTS - God provided men for the formal and expressed purpose of edification - ref. Ephesians 4:11 - 1a. THE APOSTOLIC OFFICE (Extraordinary and temporal) - i. the apostles are physical eye witness to the resurrection of Christ (Acts 1:22, Acts 10:39-4 ; none of us at present are qualified) - 1 Corinthians 7:8 (Paul asserted his qualification) - ii. An apostle must be personally appointed by Christ. (Acts 10:41) - iii. He has to authenticate his apostleship by miraculous signs - This is a foundational office. - 1b. THE PROPHETS (Extraordinary and temporal) - They spoke the infallible word from God - They are - ref. Ephesians 2:20 - "a foundation is not something that can be rebuilt during every phase of construction. The foundation is unique, and it is always laid first, with the rest of the structure resting firmly above it." - John MacArthur - - 1c. EVANGELISTS (Extraordinary and temporal) - They are apostolic delegates - ref. Titus 1:5; Titus 3:12 - (i.e. Titus, Philip the evangelist, Timothy) - 1 Timothy 4:14; 2 Timothy 4:5 - They also performed signs and wonders same as those with the prophets - 1d. PASTOR TEACHERS (Ordinary and Continual) - One qualification is that they are able to teach - This is an ordinary calling. The knly office for continued edification. - truly prophetic when they indiscriminately endorse a counterfeit form of the gift. - "Although the revelatory gift of prophecy has ceased, the proclamation of the prophetic Word still continues today-as preachers exposit the Scriptures and exhort people to obey" - John Macarthur - "The first great auty of the ministry, with reference to the church, is the dispensation of the doctrine of the gospel for its edification. Certain spiritual gifts are necessary for the right performance of this duty." - John Owen - The pastor must dispense the truth tk the people. - ref. 1 Corinthians 12:28; 1 Timothy 3 - Local church is the primary context for believers's edification. PASTOR TEACHERS (Ordinary and Continual) - One qualification is that they are able to teach THIS WEEK: 2. Christ has given spiritual gifts to each member for the purpose of edification. - "a spiritual gift is an ability, divinely bestowed and sustained, to grasp and express the realities of the spiritual world, and the knowledge of God in Christ, for the edifying both of others and of oneself" - J.I. Week 02 - HGCBC AFTERNOON SERVICE LORD'S DAY : 14-JAN-2024 *SCRIPTURE READING: Jeremiah 45 Bro. Lorenzo Tating *AFTERNOON SERMON: Isaiah 11:1-9 Deacon Jeff Chavez "THE IDENTITY OF THE MESSIAH" Focus Text: ”There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.“ Isaiah 11:1 ESV Introduction: - When it comes to discussing eschatology (the last days), some individuals are deeply engaged, connecting every event to it, while others are averse and prefer not to engage in such conversations. - Its not a bad thing to discuss the last days because at the heart of eschatology is Christ himself - We can rest in God in the present age because God's kingdom is reigning. - On eschatology: Christ should be at the center because He is the one who is coming. - Isaiah gave a picture of what is to happen - His rule is characterized by justice, transformation (v 6-9) , and the world will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord. - Whenever you read the OT, there should be a prophetic perspective. THE HOPE OF GOD's PEOPLE RESTS IN THE IDENTITY OF THE MESSIAH AS RULING KING How is the Messiah's Identity significant for the people of God? (1) This is Hope in Hopelessness (2) This is fruit in fruitlessness 1. HOPE IN HOPELESSNESS - On our focus text: It is declared that they should not rely on their own strength. - in verse 34- we know that the Assyrian nation will be judged. While the people of God are rebels and idolaters. - What seems to be hopeless is hope for God - What seems to be an end of man is the beginning of hope for God. - We stand on a firm foundation that this refers to our Lord Jesus Christ - Why is it referred to as "root of Jesse"? It refers to a new beginning (not like the Davidic lineage which failed) on how David did - a new "David" and a humble beginning. Jesse came from Bethlehem same as Jesus Christ. - ref. Revelation 5:5 ; showing the royalty and the proclamation of the kingdom of Christ. - There is hope in Christ. - Like Israel which is hopeless in themselves - Our only hope is Jesus Christ . He is our only hope in this present evil age. - Jesus Christ: He remains the hope of the entire world. - The hope that comes from the coming and ruling king is sinning brightly as they cannot put their hope in their present king. - The King of Israel fails but the TRUE KING triumphs. - Are we hoping in the mighty foundation of God's promise? 2. FRUIT IN FRUITLESSNESS - What Isaiah sees in the nation of Israel: Israel is an arrogant, selfish nation. (which can be seen on previous verses - Isaiah 9) - The fruitless and lifeless tree of the nation of Israel, is described in its majesty thru the true Israel - the Messiah - ”For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.“ Isaiah 53:2 ESV - Isaiah 53:2 (prophecy concerning the suffering servant) ; Isaiah 4:2 ; In these verses - it conveys the same picture and illustration, there will come a shoot that will grow mightily - The Lord is able to bring fruit from fruitlessness - The fruitfulness does not talk about material prosperity. It talks about Emmanuel which is the Messiah. - The Messiah comes in humility to restore His people. - Nothing but the stump of Jesse can bring life to the lifeless tree. (referring to Christ himself). - THE HOPE OF GOD's PEOPLE RESTS IN THE IDENTITY OF THE MESSIAH AS RULING KING. Do we know Him as the one who is reigning Kong? He gives hope and He gives fruit. - "from one stump as little shoot grows that becomes a branch that bears fruit - Isaiah is writing about Jesus, born in obscurity over 2000 years ago now with no status but lineage in a failed ancient dynasty" - - "He who has fixed the bounds of our habitation has also fixed the bounds of our tribulation"- Charles Spurgeon - "Gospel hope is a fruit of faith, trust, and confidence" - John Owen - We "fix our eyes in our reigning king" - as salt and light of this world. - [To unbelievers] Christ is King. May Christ be the Lord of your redemption NOT the Lord of your condemnation. There is no hope that can be found apart from Jesus Christ.

Week 22 - HGCBC MORNING SERVICE LORD'S DAY : 28-MAY-2023 *SCRIPTURE READING: Isaiah 57:1-13 Bro. Armel Jay Mercado *MORNING SERMON: Romans 15:5 Pastor Jeremiah Jangad "THE GOD OF COMFORT" Focus Text: “May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus,” Romans 15:5 ESV *Previous week: THE GOD OF PATIENCE AND LONG-SUFFERING 1. THE ESSENCE OF GOD's PATIENCE 2. THE EXECUTION OF GOD's PATIENCE 3. OUR RESPONSE TO GOD's PATIENCE *This week: THE GOD OF COMFORT Introduction: - Why are Christians still experiencing trials, temptations, uneasiness and afflictions? - Christians experience all forms of afflictions. - God is not only the God of "patience" but also the God of "comfort". - 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 ; 2 Corinthians 1:3-7 mentioned "comfort" ten times 1. THE CERTAINTY OF AFFLICTION - ref. Acts 14:22 - Affliction is part of a Christian life. - ref. Peter 4:12 (Peter telling us not to be surprised with afflictions) - Christian life abounds with suffering. - We do not need comfort if suffering is not present. - Christ is called "the man of sorrows". Christ took the flesh full of suffering. - The Bible tells us that we ought to expect suffering in our Christian life. - It is difficult to understand the purpose of God. i.e. Job never really received a full explanation of what happened to him. - There is one conclusion that we should have learned : There are a lot of things in the Christian life that we cannot understand. i.e. We cannot reconcile the sovereignty of God and responsibility of man. We cannot reconcile the sovereignty of God and the "suffering" of man. - God is more interested in your "trust" than in your "understanding". - ref. Ephesians 1:11 - We [as Christians] are not exempted from sufferings and afflictions. - Will you trust God after you've known the explanation? - "If you understand that God is sovereign, your anger will be regulated, and your dismay will turn into trust." - "God is too good to be unkind, too just to be unfair and when you cannot trace His hand you can always trust His heart" > Charles Spurgeon 2. THE CERTAINTY OF GOD's COMFORT DURING AFFLICTION - ref. 2 Corinthians 1:3 - God comforts us in all of our afflictions. - We are given the assurance that God is merciful and God is kind. - Thru much tribulation you will inherit the kingdom of God. - “Strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.” - Acts 14:22 - ref. Deuteronomy 32:39-41 - God is the God of "all" comfort. He does not inflict needlessly and He is always there. - God also comforts us in the ministration of other believers. - ref. 2 Corinthians 1:3 - "We do not equate comfort to 'healing' and 'removal of afflictions'. Comfort means that while we are in the midst of suffering, God is able to strengthen our faith." #hgcbccpulpit - ref. Romans 8:18 - God never promised that He will take away all the sufferings. - We need perseverance in the faith during trials and afflictions. How are we to persevere? This is the value of afflictions. - ref. James 1:2-4; Romans 5:3-4 3. THE CERTAINTY OF GOD's COMFORT DURING AFFLICTION TO PREPARE US FOR THE MINISTRY OF COMFORTING OTHERS - “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” 2Corinthians 1:3-4 - As we receive comfort from God, we are able to comfort others in return. - It is a privilege to be comforted by God in order to turn around with the comfort that we have to comfort other people. - Suffering is a sacred entrustment of God for us to be developed in a greater ministry. - God lets us experience necessary heartaches to broaden our ministry. - The pathway to effective ministry is through trouble and suffering. - One of the reasons why we are facing trials is because we need it. [To keep us from becoming proud.] - God uses tragedies and trials in order to prepare us. - Christ was perfected thru suffering. ref. Hebrews 2:10 APPLICATION - (i) Expect to suffer [but...] - (ii) Expect God's comfort during suffering. - (iii) We must comfort others as they endure their suffering
