Hi John, Interesting video. I agree 100% if you can use the original then do so. I used one of your armrest kits and it fitted perfectly. The console i did from a roll of vinyl copying the original padding exactly. Turned out pretty well perfect. I always vapour blast the metal parts and paint with a hammerite earosol. Works great every time.

@Classic-Car-Trim-John-Skinner
@Classic-Car-Trim-John-Skinner 10 ай бұрын
Hi Keith, Yes, you are correct - most XJ6s models left with what was referred to as a 'Flock Pile' style carpet which had a very short pile. This material is no longer made. We have very limited old stock in a few colours which once gone will unlikely be available again in the future. Note that the Wool (as per this video) is far superior in quality, durability and finish; so this is what we default to for most of our restorations. I hope this assists, let me know if you have any further questions. Jonathon

I bought a replacement top for a series 1 1/2 E Type from Moss Motors and took the cars dash stripped off its original top to 8 different experienced upolhestery trim shops . None of the shops would agree to put the top on I purchased from Moss Motors. In explaining their reasons why., I repeatedly heard from the shops that the aftermarket was too thick, too stiff in certain places and would require strong epoxy not normal adhesive spray to attach it. When I started to hear the same litany of reasons why they declined installing it , I realized they were correct in their evaluation of this aftermarket dash cover . Now I am left with a car that needs a dash top and I am relatively sure that all these aftermarket tops are all from the same manufacturer regardless of the retailer selling them . I am surprised in your video why you glanced over the differences between the original dash top and the aftermarket one. The aftermarkets, stiffness, thickness, brittleness in certain areas make it a poor choice for replacement I agree with the installers that regular upholestery spray would not work due to the stiffness of these aftermarket tops. You said you can use a hairdryer but warming up this top with its stiff composition would gradually stress sections that havent been heated yet and that is going to lead to creasing or cracking as small sections are worked . If it is as easy as you some claim how about making a video on you tube of you or someone installing one of these aftermarket tops on camera and on youtube . All I know is that our shop is stuck with a $269 top thats worthless to us since we cant find an experience interior shop thqat will install it. and I would feel guilty unloading it on some unkowing DIY enthusiast. Since we have two of these same series E Types waiting in the wings to do dash replacements on, I eagerly await a video you can refer me to or one your group produces of a filmed installation, step by step, of one of these tops from Moss Motors or one of the hundreds you say you sell of these dash tops being installed. . If you know of a video showing the installation of one of these aftermarket tops please include a link to it in your response for my reference and your viewers reference. . This video being pesented here merely shows an original top, a new uninstalled top, and the finished top but nothing at all showing the steps and work of the actual installation. Why?

Hello Barry, What an extraordinary comment/message. Let me clarify a few things for you, as you seem to be a little confused - and I also want to ensure that other viewers of my videos are not misled by your comment. RE: Moss Motors - We do NOT supply Moss Motors with this part/product. I have no idea where Moss get this part from - so I cannot comment for the unit that they supply; however, knowing the approach Moss take with most things these days - it would not surprise me if this is a cheaply made item from Asia. That being said, I simply do not know where they get their items made, nor do I care. Frankly, your anger and frustration is completely misdirected. You have seen a video showcasing a job that you and your eight trimmers have struggled to do - and taken the approach to vent your frustrations on a completely innocent and unrelated business and individual. All you needed to do was return the unsuitable item to Moss, and then contact us to buy a suitable version… RE: John Skinner Ltd - John Skinner Ltd is a small, family run business specialises in award winning, quality made interior trim and upholstery items. We are not a one-stop-shop for everything classic car related - we specialise in interior trim and upholstery; and have purely focused on this for almost 50 years now - and we are very good at it. I have taken the time to create this KZbin channel to show case our products, detailing their quality and workmanship and suitability for restoration jobs. Part of the reason for this approach is due to my own frustrations with the approach of classic car enthusiasts who seem to think that any number of companies can supply good interior trim and upholstery kits - and thus just base their purchase on the price tag and lead time. Whilst that approach may be fine for other elements of your restoration project - it is foolish to take this approach when it comes to the interior trim and upholstery. Simply put you cannot compare “apples with apples” when it comes to upholstery. They may be called the same name, and they may be essentially made of the same core materials - but the quality of those raw materials, and the pattern making accuracy and thus suitability to the car can vary massively. Based on your message, I can only assume that you have experienced this first hand on a rather negative front. John Skinners has carved a unique niche in this market as being one of, if not the, premier manufacturer of interior trim kits for the range of cars that we offer. Our in-depth knowledge of these cars, original process and materials - and how they should be made and fitted - is second to none. I offer and share this knowledge to all customers of our products/kits. However, I will only share this information with customers who purchase directly from us. I send emails, photos and videos and have in depth phone conversations with my customers if they require it. It is all part of the service. My KZbin channel is purely there to showcase our work and hopefully attract enthusiasts into making the logical choice when choosing a supplier for their restoration project. And for those who do choose to go with a Skinner Kit - they have a wealth of knowledge and experience available to them should they require it. If you are interested in knowing more about my business and our approach then I would recommend that you read the following articles and read the 100s of customer testimonials from our global base of loyal customers - john-skinner.co.uk/why-john-skinner/the-price-of-value/ john-skinner.co.uk/why-john-skinner/our-philosophy/ john-skinner.co.uk/testimonials/ In the meantime, I wish you all the best with your on going restoration project - and, of course, if you require any interior trim and upholstery for your car - then you know where to find us and I would be more than happy to help. I have a S3 Roadster myself which has recently been restored to a very high level which I plan to showcase on KZbin shortly - and this includes two new Dash Top Panels (Main + Front) both using after-market moulded Dash Tops; fitted and then fully re-trimmed in Leather - which is not an easy job, but doable with the right materials/kits and expertise. I hope this has clarified things for you and eased your frustrations/doubts that quality made parts and kits are still available if you know where to look ---> john-skinner.co.uk/ All the best, Jonathon Skinner (Managing Director of Team JSM)

@Classic-Car-Trim-John-Skinner

Hi Jim, It is only the Vinyl (Ambla) Covers that have this embossed pattern on the pleats for the TR5 & TR250 Seat Covers. This was how they were supplied originally by the TR Production Line. For LeatherFaced or Full Leather factory upgrade Seats - the pleats would have revert to being Plain originally from the factory. We, however, can offer a similar pattern for Leather options. It is NOT original (as mentioned above, the original Leather seats would have been plain pleats) - but our pattern gives a nod to originality and so some people like to go for this look. You can see this Leather embossed pattern on our TR6 Seats in this video here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/kH3CZYaols-rndE Nice option if you fancy, it but note that it was not original. Hope this helps.

I pulled down the seat springs about an inch with zip ties from top of spring to bottom of spring. I did that because when I got new seat springs they didn't have any compression and were very bouncy. When I went over a bump, I would bounce up almost out of my seat. Very bad. I didn't have any scrim material, so I added the zip ties for tension and the seats retained their comfort due to the springs, and the bouncing effect went away.

Hello, I am not sure if you have used our in-house JSM Springs and Foams, or an alternative suppliers. Please keep in mind that our Spring Units and our Seat Foam Padding Kits are designed to be used in conjunction with one another; they should not be mixed and matched with other suppliers products. I am aware of some cheaper alternatives Seat Springs on the market, which are much higher and very "wobbly". These have been supplied by the "big" wholesalers for a few years now. In my opinion these are no-where near suitable for purpose. Our springs on the other hand have remained unchanged for 40 years and work very well. They are much stiffer, which makes the initial installation harder - its a two person job ideally - but once installed they serve the purpose very well in the car. If you contact me directly I can help and advise you on this matter with photos and videos, assuming it is our JSM product that you are installing. Always happy to help and advise. I'd be interested to see a similar demo for the sound deadening kit that would sit underneath. I will be trimming my TR4 this year and don't want to be gluing some modern foil-based material to my fresh paintwork. Hopefully an original-type sound kit can be fitted without ruining new paint. Carpets look great btw. Thanks

Hello Roddy, thanks for your message and kind words; and please excuse the delay - busy days at the moment with everything going on in the world! Glad to be busy though, keeps me sane! I have just recorded and uploaded a video for the felt kit as requested - kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4nNe2OkitSJZrc

@@Classic-Car-Trim-John-Skinner Thank you so much, I am more interested in the carpets looking right than having the ultimate sound proofing so this is ideal. Great tips on glueing and stud fitting too. Great service!
