I have gcanbox's GCAN-4128.. but it did not come with an EDS/DCF file. So using a similar devices' eds (PCAN-MicroMod Digital 1) and a few tools (Delta Electronics EDS Builder 3, CanOpen Architect Mini, port CanOpen Design Tool, HamedJafarzadeh CanOpenEditor)..I cobbled together an EDS. However the documentation is incomplete, so my EDS probably has issues*, especially since each bit of the byte represents different inputs/outputs. For example, the GCAN pdf lists NOTHING for index 0x1A00, 0x2000, 0x2010 and 0x2100. And index *0x1800* says transmission type set to 0x2000(?). So to get some insight on what is actually in those OD entries, I connect a USB and PCAN Magic to read OD Entries: 0x1400 : 0x201 (RPDO1 Config COBID) 0x1600 : 0x2100 01 08 (RPDO1 Config Mapping) 0x1800 : 0x181 (TPDO1 Config COBID) 0x1A00 : 0x2010 01 10 (TPDO1 Config Mapping) 0x2000 : Entries 0+ are 0x60 , 0x00 (?) 0x2010 : Always 0 regardless of DINs PCAN Magic won't read from 0x2100, and won't write to RPDO1 (0x200+1) saying it's an invalid area.. yet if I use PCAN-View, I can change DOUT (500kbps, Standard Id 0x201 message with one data byte ). Also, I see the device transmit TPDO1 (ID 0x181) every 20ms immediately at power-on. *I tried Python CanOpen, but node.tpdo.read() fails. At this point, not sure if I should stick with free/open-source canopen software ( CanFestival , Lely CANopen, CANopenNode, KickDrive) or try something commercial (TKE CanTrace, Vector CANoe.CANopen, EmSa CanOpen Magic, CodeSys CanOpen, emotas CANopen Device Explorer , Moon CanOpen Test Tool etc). Or perhaps, even non-CanOpen specific software like plotjuggler-CAN-dbs, SavvyCan, BusMaster?

Thank you for the explanation about this topic! I have a question about Virtual Ouput mapping object (6011h). Is it related to Output groups (6200h to 621Fh) somehow? How it works? Is PDO referred to virtual mapping and user need to implement a way to map it to the proper output group? And if it is the case, how PDO257 can retrive which group the incoming message is related to? Thanks in advance.

I would assume you refer more or less to the issue stackoverflow.com/questions/48072616/why-does-a-can-2-0a-network-identifier-have-a-limit-of-2032-values That is being said that Bosch's spec. for 11-Bit CAN-ID (CAN 2.0 A part) specifies 2048 possible CAN-IDs while max 2031 CAN-IDs in older CAN controllers possible but that is not a specification but an implementation issue. Independently from that CAN 2.0 A part specification of the CAN specification 2.0 from Bosch (1991) contains almost the same as ISO 11898-1 regarding the data link layer. The specification includes additionally design suggestions. The ISO 11898-1 does however cover 2.0 B spec which includes A part as well. So from that point of view ISO 11898-1 11-Bit CAN-ID is backwards compatible with CAN 2.0 part B spec as well as with part A. I think one of the reasons is that there are several challenges coupled to the usage of CAN remote frames. This is why many Classical CAN-based higher layer protocols have already avoided CAN remote frames. Dear Shand Seimela, CiA 402 is the naming of the specification and DSP as draft specification proposal is the status of the CiA 402 specification meaning you can implement a drive device according to this specification and the specification is stable for one year. Increasing the bit rate (up to 2Mbit/sec FD payload) on a functional safety critical vehicle (especially one such as construction machinery) is going to have significantly increased EMC and EMI issues. Has this been considered or is all this research purely academic? CAN FD in automobiles is a much smaller compact network with larger costs to implement in order to meet these EMC/EMI requirements, plus the EMC requirements for automotive and Construction/Agriculture are vastly different! One of the main reasons why J1939 (at 250Kbit/s) was adopted in the first place over the higher 500K/1Mbit used in automotive.

You need to distinguish between availability and functional safety. In the functional safety it is important that a failure is detected with a very high probability, very high confidence. Then when it is detected an action is taken, which most of the times is shutting down the system, so that availability becomes 0. In this regards EMI is not a problem at all, because EMI issues are part of the error detection. (Thilo Schumann)

Is there any windows software that can be used to monitor a CanOpen network? I'm using a PEAK USB hardware and wish to simulate sending/receiving SDO/PDO data.

Dear Ben Nguyen, There are commercial and non-commercial software tools to monitor CAN/CANopen traffic and/or generate it and now also CANopen FD too. The non commercial tool is "Busmaster" from Bosch. The commercial are available from HMS, Emotas, Port, and Vector. Peak should have a software tool to monitor CAN traffic which may even supports interpretation of CANopen Messages. To simulate SDO and PDO Peak may use a send/receive lists in textual format. Look for it on their Website. Port requires EMS Dr. Wünsche CAN in interface, which is used with their monitoring tool. There are such lists and even PDO or SDO generation is supported. But since you have a Peak interface, check there. Vector has a pretty advanced tool chain for that purpose but it comes literally at the cost. Best regards, CAN in Automation
