That sounded so similar to the Ron Hicklin singers. Great job.

How do you not credit the singers and soloist by name?? Is it because they are (**were**) in high school?? Smh 🤦🏾♀️

All of you are incredible musicians. I'd love to see you do a cover of a jazz standard . I'd also like to see /hear you all use your prodigious gifts /talents to do a cover of a Sade hit. There's no doubt that it would serve you even better than this song/arrangement.

It’s a Kurt Elling arrangement - and believe it or not there are some listeners who like it better than the original. Takes all kinds of music to make a world. Either way this ensemble is awesome!

@@musicartgeek I apologize for my uncharitable comments. I was in a really bad mood when I wrote it. Yes of course there are different tastes in music and they are all valid. I'm a hobbyist guitarist and I learned that lesson decades ago. I forgot that for a few bad moments of my life . I'm going to drastically edit my my original comment. Update- as promised I drastically edited my comment so it is all positive. Like everyone else I am a work in progress and regret making the portion of my original comment that was mean spirited and probably hurtful . Thank you for calling me on it. I still don't like the new arrangement of this song but a. taste is subjective and b. the new arrangement is not the " fault " of the singers in this video. It was the choice of the music director.

@@daviddemar8749 Who isn’t in a bad mood these days? I am a hobbyist as well, and I always fight with the idea of musical standards versus subjective aesthetics. I have not figured it out either. I am interested in how a lot of jazz artists are starting to cover non-jazz material, and particularly pop songs. Kurt Elling covered this U2 song, and has also done a great cover of a Tori Amos song “star of wonder”. Brad Meldhau’s cover of Nick Drake’s “River Man” is a stunner. There’s a jazz trio called “crimson jazz trio” that does amazing versions of only king crimson material. Geoff Keezer covered Bjork’s “Venus As A Boy”. An Italian trio called “Doctor 3“ does nothing but covers of pop tunes, and dedicated one album two hits of the 70s. (They actually did a cover of the entire Sergeant peppers album, but I didn’t think that one was as successful). And one of the most amazing crossovers I’ve ever heard is the Easy star All-Stars’ version of “Darkside of the moon”. They make it sound like it was originally written as a dub album! But on a purely subjective note, I’m actually not a U2 fan, although I grew up in that time, and many of my friends are super fans. I find them bombastic, histrionic and almost silly to be honest, so the Elling arrangement actually made me reconsider them as songwriters - I may become a fan yet!

@@musicartgeek Wow ! Thank you for giving me a wonderful reply. I appreciate the time and effort. I'm home today bc it's a bad MS day and 2022 has been $^&(* so for me in that regard. The info you gave me is very interesting and I promise you that I'm going to follow up on it. I'm 61 years old and an attorney but I've been playing guitar on and off since the summer of 1970 thanks to a YMHA music and art day camp. . I'm primarily a classic rock fan but thanks to my late parents I'm a classic jazz fan too. I learned Autumn Leaves (my first standard!) In 2021and I ve been trying to learn Summertime this month but =_8:**^$% MS has been a big obstacle...jazz chords are a big challenge. Thanks again for the recommendations. I'll let you know what I think.p.s. do you know of any rock stars who are not bombastic? Lol. There are a few .George Harrison maybe ? Phil Lesh? Peter Frampton ? Cat Stevens? Jerry Garcia?
@musicartgeek2 жыл бұрын
@@daviddemar8749 Ha! Good question! Now that I think of it, rock music is literally about bombast. George Harrison, from what I have read sounds like the most modest rocker there ever was. Cat Stevens, with his very-human perambulations, was and is a songwriter of enormous emotional intelligence. What a gift for simplicity. Phil Lesh and Jerry Garcia - I'm too uniformed about to comment. What a great thread - honestly, the KZbin comments section is so often the most poisonous cesspool of the internet. I try to avoid it, but at the least try not to say negative things - the algorithm prefers me to be pissed-off, or as it's designed to see it, "engaged". Sorry to hear you have had the MS struggles (or as another person dealing with it described it to me as: "MFS"). It is an apparition - the experiences of individuals are so different and personal, and from what I understand, frustratingly unpredictable. I wish you more good days on your journey, and thank you for this welcome respite from the social media poison No matter what, we can listen

Wow! This is incredible. Everything about it. The lead vocal is blissfully free of auto tune, and full of relaxed soul. There’s a great groove from the rhythm section and in that muted guitar, so hard to do with a big group. And then the ensemble vocals come in and BAM! Video, audio all top notch. Whoever their teacher is, this is one lucky group of students. Well done. I suspect Kurt Elling, and especially Carla Bley and Sara Teasdale, would be very pleased.
