I've seen Sabine Baring-Gould's name in so many and wide-ranging places over the years that I'm surprised this is the first story of his I've heard. Fits right in with Lovecraft, MR James, and all his many other admirers.

I was read this story as a kid in elementary school. I remembered it recently because I had to ride my bike home during a torrential downpour and got so wet that this was all I could think of. Looking back on it now, Ogelthorpe was a total chad. It is funny though that he got divorced twice.
