You are right, some of the deck boards have the bark side facing downward. This is because the side with the bark facing upward was either chipped, knotty or had a rougher surface compared to the side with the Pith side facing upward. I always select the best side of the deck board for the top surface and try to orient as many deck boards as possible with the bark side facing up. See the articles below: Installing Treated Yellow Pine Deck Boards Should I place the decking bark side up or bark side down? Placing the decking bark side up helps minimize cupping, reduces splitting, and lowers the chance of rot. It also results in fewer splinters and retains less water. “The Bark-Side / Pith-Side Debate” Researchers in Wood Surface Chemistry at the USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Lab released a study “The Bark-Side / Pith-Side Debate” They examined several old decks with pressure-treated southern yellow pine decking to observe how the boards were performing. Based on their assessment, it seemed that the orientation of the boards didn't make much of a difference. Boards laid with the bark side up had similar issues, such as cupping, curling, cracking, early signs of rot, and splintering, compared to those laid with the bark side down. A wood researcher from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Professor Paul Fisette, addressed the issue of deck board orientation. His advice is to choose the best-looking surface and install the decking with the best face up. He also recommends securely fastening the deck boards and applying an annual coating of water repellent. What do the wood manufacturers recommend? The Southern Forest Products Association advises placing the bark side up, as does Georgia Pacific's installation information for their pressure-treated lumber. It is noted that if the bark side of the decking board has a poor appearance when placed up, flip the board over so that the bark side is facing down. Thanks for watching my video Norman

So what’s gel coat?
@NormanGooch4 ай бұрын
Gelcoat is a resin-based polymer layer applied to the exterior of a boat. This polymer can be epoxy or polyester-based, giving the boat a smooth, shiny finish. In addition to providing a glossy appearance, gelcoat forms a waterproof barrier that reduces UV damage and hydrolysis (a chemical breakdown due to water exposure). Gelcoat is crucial for maintaining the long-term structural integrity of your boat. Thanks for watching my video! Norman

Norman what do you say for the construction method of the Twin Troller. There seems to be issues out there with the way the motors and guards are secured to the boat without any type of waterproofing. Lunker Fishing youtube has videos on people getting water into the hulls.
@NormanGooch4 ай бұрын
I've had no issues with leaks or water getting inside the pontoons of my 2021 Twin Troller so far. I believe this problem may have been present in older model-year boats. To keep my boat well-maintained, I make sure to check and clean the motors, propellers, and grates after each use. If there is any debris, weeds, fishing lines, or algae, I remove it while it's still wet, without having to take off the grates. I use a strong stream of water to clean the recessed area behind the grates and remove any debris wrapped around the propellers using my hands or other tools. If you don't clean after each use and leave the weeds and debris to dry around the motor shaft and propellers, it becomes much more difficult to remove through the grates. By cleaning after each use, unnecessary strain on the motor is prevented and its efficiency is maintained. I always inspect and check the propellers for dings, cracks, or bends without having to remove the grates as well, most of the time, there is no debris under the grates or around the motors, but I still rinse the area with water. If you have to remove the grates to gain access to the propeller shaft to remove any fishing line that is wind-tight around the shaft, follow these instructions: 1. Use a manual screwdriver to remove the screws. "Never use power screwdrivers on plastic boats." 2. Carefully remove the grate, which may be stuck to the boat. Gently pry around the holes to break the bond. 3. Remove the propeller to access the shaft and remove the fishing line. 4. Check the propeller for dings, cracks, or bends. Lubricate the propeller shaft and replace the propeller if it's damaged. Also, check the propeller alignment pin to ensure it's not bent. To prevent leaks around the grates follow these instructions: 1. Clean in and around the holes and the mounting area. 2. Use a Q-tip to push the 4200 Marine adhesive into the screw holes. 3. Apply adhesive to the mounting area. 4. Press the grate down and hold for 3 to 4 minutes. 5. Apply Marine 4200 adhesive to the screw threads, covering them thoroughly. 6. Install the screws using a manual screwdriver only, and tighten until snug. Do not over-tighten. 7. Let the 4200 adhesive cure for 24 hours before using. I hope this helps Thanks for watching my video! Norman

Could you do a Video on how to remove screws from the stern of your boat? I will wait until the mosquitos wont carry me off to do these repairs. I used 4200 to install brackets for the smart tabs. Thank you very much ! Wish you were my neighbor 😁
@NormanGooch5 ай бұрын
I appreciate you watching my video. I hope you can complete your repair project. If you were my neighbor, I would be glad to help you with the boat repairs. As far as making a new video, I have no plans to do so. However, the preparation and repair process for the holes in the current video will be the same for the stern (if it's fiberglass). 4200 Marine Sealant is a semi-permanent, flexible adhesive sealant that bonds and seals effectively while still allowing for disassembly. You should be able to remove the screws. Please make sure to take note of the following instructions: If the screw holes go all the way through the laminate and are located below the waterline, you will need to cut pieces of fiberglass fabric in varying sizes. These pieces should be saturated with a mixture of epoxy 105/205 and 410 fairing filler to fill the hole, the number and size of the pieces will depend on the size of the holes. I hope this helps. Thanks, Norman
@Seabrat5 ай бұрын
Thank you for your videos. They were very informative and I really appreciate your step by step approach. - I filled screw holes with marine sealant when screwing in my smart tabs of which I now need to move. Will I be able to do all these steps the same way even though I did that? I did not want to take the chance of any of the screw hole area leaking so I probably went overkill with the marine sealant.
@NormanGooch5 ай бұрын
Depending on the type of marine sealant used to fill the holes, you should be able to remove the screws. However, you must be very careful to avoid breaking or stripping the screw head. Do not use a power screwdriver to remove the screws, as it can be too fast and strip away the cross shape in a Phillips head screw, making it more difficult to remove. Use a manual screwdriver with the correct size head and apply enough pressure to avoid jumping in the screw head slots. You can feel if the screw is loosening; slowly turn and remove. If the screw doesn't turn with a screwdriver, and there's enough space above the surface, you can clamp a pair of locking pliers to the screw head as close to the surface as possible. Then gently turn it counterclockwise. It's important to work slowly to avoid snapping the screw head. If the screws come out, you can use a drill and clean out the holes. Please make sure to take note of the following instructions: If the screws break off and you're unable to remove them, just let me know and I'll provide you with some suggestions on how to safely get them out without causing any further damage to your boat. Furthermore, if the screw holes extend all the way through the laminate and are situated below the waterline, you'll need to utilize progressively larger pieces of fiberglass fabric saturated with a mixture of epoxy 105/205 and 410 fairing filler to fill the hole. If you purchased a West Systems Fiberglass Repair Kit, it includes instructions and all the necessary materials for the repairs. I hope this information is helpful. Thanks for watching my video! What if I wanted to go 4’ on a 24’ round
@NormanGooch5 ай бұрын
Mike, Please note that if you decide to increase the width from 3ft to 4ft, the build instructions shown in the video will not be applicable. Extending the width significantly alters the structure compared to a 3ft deck. It's important to consider that the use of floating deck blocks may not be allowed, requiring you to set the post in concrete, add additional support, use construction screws for the deck framing, attach railing with steel post supports (half-lap joints are not allowed), and include additional diagonal bracing. Furthermore, the trapezoid frame will need to be reinforced with 2 additional 4X4 posts on double center supports, with construction screws being a requirement for building the trapezoid frames. Before beginning the build process, I strongly advise checking with your local county building code department to obtain the deck construction specifications and ensure full compliance with the building code. I hope this helps, Thanks for watching my video! Norman

@NormanGooch5 ай бұрын
