In the book Expedition, the Eosapiens are much less hostile to the main characters of the book, where the only worse thing they did was startle them. Also, they're larger in the book, where they make the observation ship that the main characters use to explore Darwin IV look like a kid's toy

What makes this really terrifying is we don't even know why the Eosapiens reacted so aggressively to the camera disks being deployed. They were curious and seemingly fine with Ike's presence, until that camera disk was launched. Do the camera disks resemble something the Eosapiens fear? Is it the sound they make, or the sudden movement? It could literally be for any reason because the Eosapiens have human-like intelligence. That uncertainty is what makes it all the more mysterious.

Then again why did they destroy Leo without warning when he never launched a camera disk He did launch one after they initially attacked him which is why they finished Leo off, but the first time they attacked Leo was totally unprovoked…… just wondering why

When the duo are testing their equipment, we do see what it looks like from the Eosapiens' perspective. It looks like a glowing blue trail that moves at high speeds. Considering the Skewer is the most dangerous predator on the planet, they could have assumed the disk would be just as deadly at those speeds.

"Why did the creature not attack the Skewer?" Guardian asked as he picked up his bloodied spear. "It clearly has weapons." "Its weapon was ineffective against a measly Daggerwrist," Scout replied. "Nor was it able to penetrate the Groveback's hide. It must know that it could never take down this beast." "So it is a coward!" Guardian chuckled, raising his spear. "Then it will be an easy target!" "No!" Scout reached for the weapon. "Don't tell me you've come to _like_ this thing?" Guardian growled, rising into the air to assert dominance over the trembling Scout. "You've spent too much time following it! Perhaps it has you under its spell!" He held his spear like a club. "Maybe I should-" "Enough of your bickering," came an authoritative ping. The two tribesmen turned to face their Chief. "You will not harm it. It hasn't sensed us yet, and I would prefer it didn't. Coward or not, that thing is dangerous. It just survived the Skewer and is likely scared to death. You've seen what a cornered Arrowtongue will do to survive." Chief gestured to a scar on his belly. Guardian raised his spear again. "But I can take it out before it-" "I said no." Chief's word was final, and the others relented. "Now help me lift this beast." He took hold of the Skewer's head. "The tribe hungers." His tribesmen silently obeyed. Scout took a wing while Guardian kept watch. They began dragging the beast towards their cliff. Halfway up, Guardian noticed the creature had followed them, but had not sensed them yet. "As you followed the creature," Chief addressed Scout, "what did it do?" "Nothing, mostly," Scout recalled. "It just looked at things for a time before moving on." "Then we will do the same. No doubt it will find its companion," Chief warned. "And though it may be cowardly, it may still be angered." He and Scout dropped the Skewer. "We will remain hidden and wait for it to lower its guard. Then I will approach." He turned to Guardian, "Be on alert, but no sudden moves." Then to Scout, "And you stay hidden until we know it's safe." --- The creature, as expected, rose above the cliff and headed toward its downed companion. Once he was sure it was sufficiently distracted, Chief made his presence known. The creature looked towards him. "Hello, creature," Chief announced. The creature did not respond. Chief wrinkled his nose in confusion. Did it understand him? Why couldn't he sense any sonar pings from it? The two said nothing, watching each other intently. Finally, the creature emitted a strange moving light and ping. Chief wrinkled his nose again. Was it trying to communicate with him? If so, what was it saying? As if sensing his question, the creature pinged again. --- Guardian watched impatiently from behind his rock. What was Chief doing? Did he really think he could talk to such a dangerous creature? What if something happened to him? Who would lead the tribe? His thoughts were interrupted when a light appeared in front of the creature. "Another weapon!" he thought as he left cover. He hurried toward the creature. "You will not harm our leader!" he cried, and began to close in on the creature. The creature's light disappeared as it turned to face him, but Guardian's mind was made up; he was going to protect Chief no matter what. --- The creature's small head frantically looked back and forth between Guardian and Chief. As if sensing the creature's distress, he turned to Guardian. "It's alright," he pinged. "It's trying to tell me something." Guardian relented and backed off. The creature's light appeared again, and once more it pinged. Chief responded by flashing his bioluminescence; a strange way of communicating, but the creature seemed to understand. Sensing Guardian's tension, he rose further into the air. The creature followed. Two pings, two flashes. Three pings, three flashes. Four pings, four flashes. The lights changed. "The creature appears friendly," Chief announced. "It is safe." --- Scout was elated. Just as Guardian had said, Scout had grown to like the creature, finding it fascinating, almost childlike. Several times he had wanted to greet the creature, but each time he caught himself and stayed back. But now he had the Chief's blessing! He hurried to the creature, arms outstretched. "Hello! It's so nice to finally meet you!" Chief graciously moved aside. The creature's lights made funny shapes and strange pings; how adorable! Scout failed to notice the creature backing away, though. In his moment of bliss, he had forgotten the creature was skittish and didn't like this kind of sudden movement. Without warning, the creature launched its weapon. --- Scout screamed in terror and lunged for it. Guardian was right! How could he have been so foolish as to fall for this monster's gentle façade! He squeezed and crushed the weapon, and threw it to the ground. He cursed the creatures. Chief and Guardian surrounded the creature. It tried to get away, but Guardian had grabbed its tail and impaled its body with his spear. Like he would an Arrowtongue's legs, Chief took hold of the creature's body and pulled, tearing its body from its tail. With its lifeless body in hand, Chief began venturing towards his tribe. Guardian and Scout followed. Regaining his composure, he reassured the others. "It's okay. The creature is dead." He gestured to the trophy in his hand. "We're safe now."

@@lochness5524 Thanks! Even though I've watched this program several times since it first aired, it was only recently when I noticed the communication between "Chief" and "Guardian" (Guardian closes in on Ike, but it looks as if Chief tells him to stand down). In addition to learning about the Emperor Sea Strider, we can also learn something about the Eosapien's anatomy as well. Either they can float high into the atmosphere where the air may be thinner, or their bodies are strong enough to endure these salt/mineral storms with the kinetic punch of a young hurricane.
